Why is icecream sweet?

Why doesn't anybody make salted, spicy or sour icecream? Is there a reason behind that? Is it that the frozen goes better with the sweet taste? Wouldn't you like to try a different kind of icecream?

Just imagine this. How can you manage to eat a salted ice cream or a spicy or sour one? Hehe.

i tried once to eat an ice cream and it taste salty. my friend prepared an ice cream in her ice cream maker. i think she put was not sugar but fine salt so the result is salty ice cream. based on my experience i will prefer sweet ice cream rather than salty one...

I believe this could be because icecream is mostly seen as a dessert, and desserts are often sweet. Another reason could be that salt and certain acids (like the acids in citrus fruits) makes it a lot easier for the icecream to melt. But, I'm no expert. I have eaten a couple of icecreams though that weren't sickly sweet. :3 Basil and lime sorbet is nice and sour, and salty licorice icecream is not that uncommon here in Sweden. I think your best bet is sorbets if you want to try a different taste sensation, or make your own icecream. I'd love to try a chili-lime flavoured one, or maybe coconut and lime...
