Battle Of The Cicadas!!

It's Cicada time!! These winged insects come out every 17 years! They came out 17 years ago and they are driving me crazy! They have pretty wings. Somehow they keep flying into me and landing on my clothes. But after 17 years underground, guess it's their time to shine!! Are the cicadas out in your area?!

I'm not sure, we did get some rain just now and I thought I saw a butterfly.

This is a bad year compared to most, because there are three types of cicadas, and their cycles are all lined up for them to emerge this year. There are yearly cicadas, 13-year cicadas, and 17-year cicadas.
I noticed this morning when I left my house to go to work that the noise from the cicadas was almost deafening, which means they are emerging in full force now.

@db20747 Leave it to certain people to find a way to take advantage of a situation for money or 15 minutes of fame! lol. Something similar happens whenever south Florida gets a major cold front (when temps drop below 40 degrees, which is rare), because all the iguanas become comatose below 40 degrees and fall out of the trees. People then go around picking them cup off the ground and then cooking them for meat or to make iguana tacos.

Hey there Jeff!!! So fun to see replies to my old post!! Thank goodness the cicadas don't come out every year around here. I would definitely have to move out of town!! Saw on YouTube some people are frying them and making a burger out of them. have a great day!

We don't have cicadas here in the UK. We have grasshoppers and crickets which 'sing' and the sound of cicadas is often used on background tracks to suggest that the action takes place in the Southern States (or some other warm place).
It seems that there are some cicadas which have a 13 year life cycle. I wonder what would happen if the two varieties bred. Would you get an awful lot of very confused nymphs or would there be a whole breed of 15 year cicadas?
You clearly live in one of the areas marked in green on this map (Yup, D.C. is in one of the green areas!).
Every 17 years a swarm of cicadas appears in the northeastern United States. Why?
