You know it’s a good year for music when this guy doesn’t even make the top ten! While my vacation is winding down the celebration of songs that are turning half a century old this year is just warming up! Here’s today’s song.
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John
Dang Siri: I ask for this song and it gives me that pathetic George Michael version instead.
I wouldn’t call Caribou one of Elton’s greatest albums ever, but it has two absolute classics back-to-back to close out side two: this, and the haunting “Ticking.”
Elton is all over the place in this song, from the soft intro the bluesy quality toward the end. It’s a big hit, and one that’s still remembered and loved today.
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Recorded by Elton John
From Caribou, 1974

I understand. Not everything he did is universally appealing. Lots of people adore “Your Song,” and it’s one of my least favorites by him.

Bernie was on fire with great lyrics in those days, and Elton simply knew what to do with them/

Elton was what they call my “teenybopper idol” when I was 15. Most girls my age liked Donny Osmond or the DeFranco Family instead.

Elton said this song had a strong Beach Boys influence with respect to sound and harmonies. And so why not get Beach Boys Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston to sing backup.
A very powerful and dramatic tune!

I always appreciate Elton paying homage to his influences like that.
