Cravings When You Are Sick

My daughter is a bit under the weather today. For some reason, she craved a salad that I once made. I don't remember much about making it, but she did . Strawberry, pineapple, cucumber, baby spinach, and Israeli/pearl couscous. No dressing. She didn't feel like eating anything all day, but she swallowed two plates of this just now! When I'm sick, I often crave a vegetable salad with Italian dressing. My mom used to make that for me when I got sick - that always hit the spot even if I didn't eat much. What foods do you crave when you're not feeling well?

When I don't feel good, I want mashed potatoes. Sometimes Pretty will make some for me but usually, I have to make them myself. When she doesn't feel good, she always wants some chicken noodle soup. We keep a few cans of it in the cupboard, just in case.

@Tampa_girl7 Yes, they are. Mom always made mashed potatoes for me when I didn't feel good as a kid.

That salad sounds good! I don't think I get cravings when I'm sick. I don't get sick too often, fortunately.

At least it was mostly healthy and she was well enough to be able to eat. I have to agree with you on the spicy food when sick . . . it makes your system work - to sweat and clear up your nose/sinus. It feels good on the throat too. I have not told many here, but my daughter ended up with covid (we think she got it from work) and a few days later I got it too. She had worse symptoms than me, but recovered much faster . . . overall it has been mild but I am on day 10 now. Husband and son are negative thus far. Hope you and your family stay healthy!!!!

@changjiangzhibin89 Thank you! You know we have been very careful all this time . . . so it surprised us too. Luckily it was not terrible, but still no one wants to ever feel sick. We were able to take care of this at home. Interestingly, we did not have congestion nor coughing . . . if we did not test, we would still not have thought this was covid. You and your family please take care too!!

@much2say I had a little cold the first winter we spent here in Switzerland (1999), I had lost the habit to cold weather- It was a little cold and did not even require medications. I never had a flu or a problem that obliged me in bed. I cannot remember I ever saw my Mom and her mother sick.

Lucky me I don't even remember when I was unwell but in my younger days I always had to have foods like pzza or burgers or spaghetti when I was sick otherwise nothing would go down,

Wow, you are indeed fortunate to not remember! Spaghetti was one of my very favorites - but I didn't think to request it when I was sick (maybe I was conditioned to have salad . . . much easier than making spaghetti ). I had a lot of sore throats as a kid - I had a hard time swallowing a lot of things when that happened.

When I was taking chemo treatments, I was craving rice krispie treats, but the only foods I could eat had to be extremely cold. So I made the treats and put them in the freezer. They weren't bad. Hope your daughter's feeling better.

Oh my goodness - frozen rice krispie treats ! That was a pretty smart solution - how was the texture? Was eating only extremely cold foods because of the particular chemo treatment? Thank you! She is completely better by now - I caught it from her not too long after.

When I am sick, I do not like to eat anything that makes me weaker. But my gut told me to think of the food that energizes me and there is no other but native friend chicken

Now why did I somehow know you were going to say fried chicken (did you mention that in a post before, or maybe I've just gotten to know you well )? I do think that salty or well seasoned foods seem to help perk up the sick system.

Yes, the salty stuff was/is for me too! I feels good down the throat . . . I feel like it helps to keep mucus from forming. Yah, sometimes it's too difficult to swallow the solid foods, especially when we have a sore throat.

@much2say Sickness at time leads to dehydration and that's the reason the body craves for liquids.

I know you're a wonderful cook . . . I'll bet your homemade soups are awesome!! I will always make scratch chicken vegetable soup for my kids when they get sick (someday I will just have to make batches to freeze - of anything - so I have them on hand!). My parents used to have sherbet on hand all the time - I had forgotten about that - yes, so soothing on a sore throat!

@much2say Awe, shucks....thanks. I don't get complaints so I guess it's all edible! My kids always loved sherbet, especially on a sore throat. They still like it, just to eat, especially in the summers.

Either soup and bread, or creamy, sweet, unhealthy things. When I had the mumps and the doctor said to feed me what I wanted I had tomato soup and grape juice. Amazing what a special meal will do for you.

I know - that salad sounds like something I may have made during summer when I didn't feel like cooking - just cutting up stuff . Watermelon - that sounds sensible actually - keeps you hydrated and the sweetness is oh so good !

I must've made that once when I just cut up stuff for dinner, not wanting to cook . But better that than eating junk food. I rarely lose my appetite, so if I don't want to eat, I must be really sick. Do you crave a certain drink when you're sick?

The only time I lose my appetite is if I have a really high fever but I rarely get fevers. I don't really crave a special drink, usually water is just fine but I will make myself hot toddies now and then ..... hmmm, hot toddy sounds good right now but I want a wee bit o bourbon in it.

Mom always used bourbon as a cure for stuff and boy did I hate when she'd make me take a teaspoon of it when I had a soar throat, that burned like crazy.

So sorry to hear about your daughter, I hope she feels better soon. That salad sounds good, lots of good stuff in it. Whenever I am sick, I crave for my mom's stir fry noodles or if I am really, really sick, it will be her chicken macaroni soup.
