Day 118 – Prepared for Battle Numbers 1:1 Now JEHOVAH spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 “Take a census of the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, 3 from twenty years old and above—all who can go to war in Israel. You and Aaron will number them by their armies. 4 With you there will be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his father’s house. 5 “These are the names of the men who will stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6 “From Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7 “From Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 8 “From Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar. 9 “From Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon. 10 “From the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 11 “From Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni. 12 “From Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 13 “From Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran. 14 “From Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 15 “From Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.” 16 These were chosen from the congregation, leaders of their fathers’ tribes, heads of the divisions in Israel. 46 All who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 47 But the Levites were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe; 48 for JEHOVAH had spoken to Moses, saying, 49 “Only the tribe of Levi you will not number, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel; 50 but you will appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over its furnishings, and over everything that belong to it; they will carry the tabernacle and its furnishings; they will attend to it and camp around the tabernacle. 51 When the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites will take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites will set it up. The outsider who comes near will die. 52 The children of Israel will pitch their tents, everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; 53 but the Levites will camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites will keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.” 54 Thus the children of Israel did; according to everything JEHOVAH commanded Moses, so they did. God’s name: JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal Kurios – Lord Theos – Mighty God Pneuma – Spirit, Breath God’s character: Census Taker Every ten years in the United States, the government takes a census of everyone. You can see the total of the population when you enter a town or village. JEHOVAH told Moses to number everyone twenty years old and older from every tribe and appointed leaders from the tribe as heads over their tribe. When the count concluded there were 603,550 men able to go to war. As Christians, you fight a battle every day. JEHOVAH knows your name and position in His army. You don’t fight with sword and spear as the Israelites did. You fight with the Sword of the Spirit; the Word of God and you fight in prayer against Satan and his demonic forces. Every day, you need to prepare for battle. Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Kurios and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of Theos, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the whole armor of Theos, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Pneuma, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Pneuma, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. When you stand in your armor every day, Satan cannot come against you. He will never defeat you, but you will defeat him. JEHOVAH numbered the children of Israel so they would know they could defeat their enemy, not by their strength, but by His. When you go against Satan, you don’t go against him in your strength, but in JEHOVAH’S strength. He gives you everything you need for the battle. It’s His armor you wear. It’s His Word you carry in your heart. It’s His shield and breastplate. When you go to battle, you go in JEHOVAH’S armor and in His strength. Satan has no power against you when you come against him in the armor of JEHOVAH. Do you have His armor on? Are you ready for battle? JEHOVAH made certain the children of Israel were ready for battle. He placed the tabernacle in the middle of the camp. When Israel looked at the tabernacle, they saw His presence with them in the pillar of cloud that rose from the Mercy Seat by day and the pillar of fire by night. They were never alone. He was always with them. JEHOVAH is with you too when you stand in His armor ready for battle. Let’s pray: Father, I stand in Your armor ready for battle. Satan, I come against you in the strength and armor of JEHOVAH. You will never defeat me. I claim victory over you in the name of JEHOVAH. Father, You are my battle cry. With You, I can defeat my enemies. With You, Satan stands defeated. Let Your praise fill me as I go forth to war. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. That's a large number of men to count by hand. I guess they had some type of a method to do it. They were probably counted tribe by tribe. The Levites held a special religious status, and were not included in this count.

Yes, it was tribe by tribe. No, but they had their separate count for the work in the tabernacle.

@just4him Yes, a count of them is mentioned in Numbers. Numbers, chapter 3, verse 39: "The total number of Levites, which Moses and Aaron tallied by order of Yahweh, by their clans, all males one-month of age and older, amounted to 22,000."
