Hiring An Electrician Will Cost a Lot

My wife's over 50 year old dining room wrought iron light fixture shorted out last week. She bought it back when she was in Turkey teaching our Air Force kids whose families were stationed there. Sooo, she wants to get it fixed. Since I am much better at breaking than fixing, I did manage to get it down, took it to a place where they rewired it and now have an electrician coming on Wednesday to reinstall it. I hope this works out. It also needs a new dimmer so we can use LED bulbs which I bought some of too. The shop where I had the rewiring done recommended some good "handy men" to do the job, but this is electricity so I really want it done by a licensed professional. That and the new roof we need to have done this summer are going to drain the treasury. Would you do electrical work yourself or use a handy man? Or hire a Pro?

I hope nobody has a shocking experience. How much will it cost?

That's the unknown shock at the moment. I have roof bids from 12 to 17,500 (gulp)

@JamesHxstatic We had our roof replaced, it cost $9,000 for a total redo, but that sucker didn't leak for over 20 years!!! It may cost like crazy, but you have to stand it up against the cost of other replacements from leaks.

i would hire a pro though i would know he will charge a lot. they all do this these days. even if they can't help you, they would charge their visit. good luck to you.

Well, he came, got it done and it works. Oddly, they'll mail a bill to me. Funny, most times here, you pay the installer.

My husband can do some electrical work. But anything major, he calls a pro.

Best of luck to you on the costs, I was lucky that way in Latvia, We had an old two-story house but my husband could do anything electric from rewiring to anything that needed fixing, He was a whiz at these things,

My mother knows some electrical work and I have had a handy man do some electrical work for me. But major jobs, I might get a pro unless it costs too much.

I do the electrical work. I figure if things don't burn down I did it right!!! I did better than my ex-husband did. He rewired a lamp and plugged it in and shocked himself something awful!!! I took it away from him, redid the work and it worked beautifully. Major jobs I get an electrician to do...if it's burning down my home, I get the electrical provider to do it behind my back. Be careful with the light fixture, it's going to be worth some money!!! Even now those kind of things bring huge bucks from collectors. It's better that you're having a professional do the work! Shoot I saw that the shade on the dining room light needed cleaning I was tempted to call for some help...but I managed without drenching the cats.

I do simple things myself or try to, but some things require a professional.

I would say it would depend on the work. If it's something small I could probably do it myself, but biggger I might hire a professional.
