Others have changed our plans again

Once again our plans have been changed and Vince will now go into hospital on Monday and have open-heart surgery the next day. It was to have been today but was put off for three weeks. Now they’ve had a cancellation and it’s Vince’s turn.
We are off to visit friends shortly and again tomorrow then we will be more or less isolating after that. He won’t be able to do anything much for at least a few weeks so while he’s in hospital I might cook up some meals to freeze.
I think the hard part will be for him to remember that he must be careful and not go lifting or over-exerting himself. It would be easy to do once you start feeling a bit better.

From experience with my father and his open-heart surgery, it wasn't a problem for him to remember that there was to limited over activity. It takes quite awhile to feel better. Also, he needs to be careful about contact with outsiders. It's easy for recoverees to catch viruses. The biggest thing was Mom and I going through the bomb threat at the Greyhound bus station. But after about 6 months father took his fledgling ride on his dirt bike. He never looked so happy as when he got off the bike and strutted in the house and collapsed on the chair and fell asleep!!!! Recovery does take a little time.

Booklet is a good initiative. May be other Hospitals can also follow the same initiative.

Well, the upside of the plans changing again is that you both have less time to worry about it happening, hopefully it will now happen on the day it is supposed to.
When he gets home, he won't be super hungry...but will be glad he is home and eating your good food.

@judyev It’s amazing how quickly patients are up on their feet after cardiac tinkering. I’ve visited so many such people in hospital over the past thirty years who’ve had by-pass surgery and things have greatly improved over that time. All very routine for everyone except for the patient and their family. Still wishing Vince well.

I hope Vince does well. My hubby had a hole in his heart and had open heart surgery when he was in his 40s. The medics had him sitting up and going for a little walk the next day! They said the best thing for him was to walk. He craved protein for days and days afterwards.

You're right in saying that Vince should be careful and never over-exert himself. Recently, quite some people I used to know have left us . They had cardiological issues. A church member who looked well enough after heart issues could not be saved, even by the best hospital in South India.

I helped care for my mother and mother in law after open heart surgery and I have to agree that he will not forget to not exert himself during the first couple of weeks! It is a very slow healing process. I will keep you both in my prayers for a successful surgery and recovery!

@JudyEv You will be busy! There is so much he won't be able to do for himself, including feeding himself at first. Every inch of your body that moves hurts. My mother was very bad about doing her rehab and moving. It took her longer to recover. I hope your hubby bounces right back!

The booklet they gave us gives a long list of how long before they can do this, that and the other. I'm hearing more and more that it won't be a problem keeping him quiet. Thanks for your support. MyLot will be even more important to me over the next few months.

Prayers for you and Vince. He might feel better fairly soon, and like you said, be prone to over exerting himself. How long is he expected to be in the hospital?

@JudyEv It sounds like he is going to be bored. I remember when I had my open heart surgery when I was a kid I wasn't supposed to pick up anything heavier than a tea cup for a month. I kept getting in trouble for picking up my German shepherd puppy at home.

They're saying seven to ten days in hospital, several weeks before he can do anything at all and two months before he can drive. They actually list a heap of things - washing up, sewing, ironing, washing cars, mowing lawns, etc, etc.

@snowy22315 There is a lot of 'words' about being tired and weak and that it's natural to be like that so perhaps keeping him quiet won't be as hard as I thought it might be.

If someone has been having an active lifestyle, it can be hard to avoid doing active physical works.
Best of wishes for Vince's treatment and his recovery.
I hope that you would still be active here on Mylot during these days.

Yes, these types of operation carry quite a risk but most pull through unscathed so hopefully Vince will have a full recovery too. Thanks for the good wishes.

@JudyEv - I'm so sorry to hear that Vince will be having open heart surgery on Monday! It is scary, but once he heals he should feel much better. I'll say a little prayer for you both ... since you are the one who will be his caregiver!

@JudyEv Yes I did. Giraffes have them too. We had a giraffe head in our car and got a real closeup look! You're very welcome. I can imagine how stressed you must be.
