I know I didn't As most of you know I was badly bitten by a Cocker Spaniel 2 weeks go for no reason well apart from the fact he wanted my Dog Anyway this morning I phoned my Friend who is also a Dog Breeder as I needed advice from her as my little Gissi is sick (hence the reason I am not about much at the moment) and 2 Vets later he is still not any better so I decided to call my Friend who has advised me what to do, it will take 2 weeks so 2 more weeks of sleepless Nights but I do not mind as long as it works Anyway I then she asked how things where with me, so I told her about being bitten by a Cocker Spaniel and she told me something I never knew about Well as she advised me to I googled it and was shocked Here is the link THIS IS NOT A REFERRAL LINK http://www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk/rage_syndrome.htm Did you know about this as I certainly didn't ? It would explain a few things I guess

Kiss the Little Man for me please...I thought he was doing better & am EXTREMELY saddened to hear he is having problems once again!!! I have never heard of the name of this disease. They make them up faster than I can keep up with them. When I was growing up, it was simply called a MEAN DOG!!! They said it was very rare & that the dog is usually sleeping when it occurs. The Beast was not asleep when he attacked you. I still believe that he is an abused dog with other problems. I grew up with a Cocker & she was the sweetest dog ever. The biggest problem we had with her was that she cried every time we left home & I mean she cried huge tears. The entire family felt guilty every time we had to leave.

Hi LadyM I am hoping that this treatment will work and it is such an easy one I do not understand that the Vets could not think of it for goodness sake I really hope it will cure him, The asleep thing was only an example I have been informed it can happen any time I know I will never trust one again after this apart from the ones I know but I will be slightly weary of them Gissi sends you lots of Love and big Hugs

Goodness that is terrible LadyM Well the Police came to see me today to make sure I am ok But it is going to go court as the Dog nearly went for the Police to, he came over to her put his head next to her leg and as she went to stroke him he went to bite her, the Owner sat there and just said "oh he nearly bit you then" well it went down on record to

Be prepared Gabs, there's a good chance he will be put down. I feel the owner should be put down & the dog rehabilitated, but most courts don't look at it that way!!!

Interesting! I'm glad to hear that it is very rare. It sounds to me like it could be the canine form of paranoid shizophrenia, doesn't it? I had a Cocker Spaniel when I was a kid and he was by far the best dog I had ever owned. He was protective but not violent. He was also quite charming in his own right. He and I used to have "conversations" where I'd get close to his face and ask him what was on his mind. He would respond by whining and "talking" the way dogs do. This could go on for 10 or more minutes. I'm VERY glad to read that this rage syndrome is rare! I'm so sorry to hear about Gissi. I wish there was a way to cure his problem easily. I hope that what you are doing now will be successful. Poor Gissi. Poor YOU! I know how much you worry about your little fella. We all worry about him. Give him an extra pat for me and let him know we're all thinking of him and hoping he feels better soon.

Do you have something over there called Goldbond Medicated Cream? You can get it here at any pharmacy, over the counter. There is one form of it made specifically for itching. I was once sunburned very badly on my back. I took a bath with oatmeal then had my husband rub some lotion on it. I don't know what it was but something started an intense itching so bad that I was losing my mind! It hurt too bad to scratch but nothing I tried worked to control, or even lessen, the itching. I called the hospital to see if they could suggest anything while my husband went to the pharmacy to ask if there was anything the pharmacist could suggest. She suggested I try Goldbond Medicated Anti-itch cream. He bought some and brought it home. Once he put it on me, the itching stopped... completely! I had a dog who was allergic to flea bites. Whenever he got bit, he would itch so badly he'd scratch a six inch bald spot wherever the bites were, then they would begin to bleed. I tried the Goldbond on him and it worked for him, too. So, if it is sold there, give that a try. I swear by the stuff, even more than those cortisone creams. One question, though. Did Gissi have this condition before his heart problem or did it start after he was put on medication for it? I'm wondering if it could be a reaction to his medications.

Hi gabs, I´ve read the article, haven´t heard about the "rage syndrom" before. This might explain why some dogs become aggresive and attack people for no particular reason. I´m sorry you´ve been bitten by a cocker and that Gissi is not well. Been meaning to write to you but didn´t want to bother you because what I´ve got to say about my health is not very positive. Hope you and your little pal will recover soon. Big hugs XXX Dana

hi gabs no I sure did not know this. maybe that explains the behavior of that dog as I had always thought cocker Spaniels were sort of sweet tempered. I have learned something again from mylot. Always out to learn new things. I am sorry to hear Gissi is feeling sick again.I hope for both Gissi's sake and yours that your friend's idea works some wonders. Poor little man in his doggie suit sure doesn't deserve to be sick again. Are you sure that the cocker did not bite Gissi? Oh dear I am sure you checked that first thing.Rage that really sounds like the dog that attacked you for sure. well near lunch time here. t ake care Gabs and hug Gissi for me. here are three for you.

I really read up on this syndrome and it only affects a small percent of different breeds not only spaniels. I checked it out for chihuahuas and a small percent of chi's also have had the syndrome. I think one of mine does too and it has been suggested I take her to a behaviour specialist.

Our two cockers and chihuahua - They've long passed on and we miss them so much!
Their names are, Bubbles, Peanut (chihuahua) and Rainbow
I'm not only shocked, I'm FLABBERGASTED! WOW! Hubby and I had two WONDERFUL cocker spaniels that lived to be 12 and 13 years old and they never showed such aggression! Not even once! I know the article says it's rare but still, it's a shocker and a half for me. Our two were the most sweetest, loving and obedient that we've ever had or seen. We could walk them without a leash and they'd mind every command. We've had a number of people comment on their good behavior and say things that were funny like, 'I wish my kids would listen like that'. This is unreal! Glad to know though. It'll be another reason not to have them again. The first reason is their fur. It's just too much to deal with on a daily basis and is partly why we shaved them down (the female had a double coat of fur and it caused skin infections). Thanks for passing this on gabs! It's good to know such things as this!

Hi gabs, More problems again, you poor lady. How are you feeling? I hope Gissi gets better soon and makes a healthy recovery, so you both can finally relax a little. I've been away for a few days and was wondering what has happened since your last discussion. And no, I never heard of this in cocker spaniels, but I do know they are known for biting. You had mentioned that this dog attacked before in your area so I'm just guessing he doesn't like other dogs. I don't think he has this rage syndrome, but I'm only guessing. So what has happened so far with this woman and her dog?

Hi Gaby, First of all, how are you doing and how is Gissi? Have you found out what is wrong with him? How is he acting? Has he ever played sick when you were sick? My first dog whi Believe was a shi tzu played sick for 3 days because I let a friend stay with me while my husband was gone. Well Gibson(my dog) didn't know how long this guy had been friends with us so he was very unhappy and wouldn't move from my bed. I finally took him down stairs and put him where he could tinkle. Suddenly he saw his girlfriend and forgot all about being sick. Gissi is probably sick though. Thanks for the info on rage, My Aunt had a Black Cocker that always scare me as a kid. WellSweetie I hope you and Gissi feel better soon. Love Ya Leenie

Hi Gaby, I am sad to read that Gissi is not doing well. Have you found out what is wrong with him? I hope he gets better. How's the leg? Anyway thank you for this link this is the first time I have heard of Rage Syndrome and would like to know more about this. My friends have cocker spaniels and they have wonderful temperament unlike my Louise and I never thought for once that this was this breed of dog that bit you! Perhaps I did not read it well but all the while I was thinking it was big dog like a mallinois or German Shepherd. Was shocked to find out it was a cocker spaniel!

I did not know about the rage syndrome known to be found in a small percentage of cocker spaniels as well as a few other breeds. I believe that this can occur in any breed of dog although as long as a dog is properly trained with obedience, well cared for and socialized with people and other dogs, the percentage could be much lower. Again, I believe that there is no such thing as bad dog behavior but is about bad dog handling. No dog should get labeled but the owners should be with irresponsible dog owner. This is like saying all rotties are aggressive. The truth is they are not is all about how they are brought up. I am sorry for you to have had this experience. Truly.

The link you’ve provided is extremely interesting and something I was definitely not aware of and you’re right, it does explain things a bit doesn’t it? I love cocker spaniels and this information is something I will keep in mind if I ever adopt another dog. Are you feeling any better?

We had a red cocker spaniel and he was a little wuss. No rage there. Seriously, loud noises made him scared and he'd often pee! So glad he didn't have that. So you thinking the dog that bit you has this syndrome?
