It was that time again for my dental checkup. I actually do not dread going there. She talks my ears off with a myriad of subjects - it's a great distraction as she works on my teeth .
Today's topics included:
*Going to the Hollywood Bowl last night with her brother
*Composer John Williams and other shows at the Bowl
*Her limping, as an old injury was aggravated by a weird fall at Disneyland in January
*The old injury was from a mountain biking fall
*Miracles of physical therapy advice from a friend
*Seeing an old friend from Hawaii at Disneyland by chance
*Her surgeries to repair her knees, graphic descriptions
*Risk assessments for where she works in winter as a ski instructor.
*The things she and her brother did growing up as latch key children
*How her brother caused her to trip onto a lawn sprinkler and get 20 stitches on her knee
*Internship fails at her office in the past year
And more.
Yah, she talks A LOT .
Funny though - she did not make one mention of my teeth this time . I guess everything was fine. I'll see her in another 6 months.
Hope your teeth are doing well . What's your dentist like?

The dentist who took care of my teeth when I was in my twenties and thirties chatted away about his kids and the vacations they had taken since I last saw him. When he retired, I didn't have a dentist for about 15 years but didn't have any tooth problems, either. When I did need a dentist again, he was an Indian and I couldn't understand most of what he said so I didn't worry about it. When Pretty needed work done around Christmas, we went to a new dentist. He's Japanese and we can't understand him, either. He talks to his nurse and ignores me while cleaning my teeth.

@much2say I've actually only had my teeth cleaned once. The dental tech that cleaned them kept being rough with me. When I complained, she told me that if she popped a crown off (I have three crowns.) that the dentist would just pop it back on for me. I ask who would be paying for the pain and suffering I'd sue her over if that happened. She was much gentler with my teeth for the rest of the cleaning. I don't want any more cleanings.
I can usually just listen to someone with a thick accent and start understanding them after a little while but the Indian dentist didn't really speak much English and the Japanese guy wasn't talking to me. *shrug*
If you ever get the chance to talk to vanny in person or over the phone, do it. She has the most beautiful, little girl voice I think I've ever heard. And her accent sounds just like mine, to me and to Pretty. (It's funny to see her writing that she's a terrible vampire and to think of her saying that in an almost whisper little girl voice. )

@TheSojourner I read two other responses from that person and they all came across that way... I don't know if GAA has read those responses, though.

I love how you listed all the topics, of course you couldn't actually interact given that your mouth was wide open being worked on, right?
I haven't got one, I know I should have years ago and I did go to a couple dentists but you couldn't pay me to go back to those bozos.

Oh yes! I appreciate that she is still very good about masking. In fact, I see that she wears 2 masks. She has always kept up with covid protocols - thank goodness (otherwise, I would not go!). But yah, I guess even masks do not stop her from chatting .

@LadyDuck I somehow felt safer at dentists' offices rather than the doctors . . . we didn't skip dental appointments during covid. They were good about masks, temperature takes, sanitizing, keeping patients apart, etc. I think if my dentist did not talk, I would think something was wrong .

Wow thats a lot of topics she chatted about. My dentist used to be a bit of a chatterbox but some of the things he talked about required an answer which was hard considering his hands were in my mouth

I need to have a dentist...but I've a big fear of them, like a phobia but worse
Don't even know why I responded here as I normally avoid anything to do with dentists
All I do know is that when I eventually physically HAVE to go it's going to cost me a very large chunk of my savings.

You were brave to respond to my dental post then . I feel that way towards doctors . . . well not so much the doctor, but what they might say/find .
Ah, we are fortunate to have dental insurance - with 2 kids we just have to have it. But my dentist does offer some kind of financial plan . . . for X amount per year, you get 2 cleanings including x-rays and such - is there something like that there?

I have to go on Thursday morning to for my checkup but I go to the dental hygienist. The dentist before Corona came into our lives was smart and had me book an appointment for her and then him afterward. He is nice but I have not been to him in ages. it is very expensive to go to my dental hygienist and then him so I just go to her. I also go every 6 months. Wow, she does let you know her life story and glad that the time goes by fast. Mine I love and have been going to her for a long time. They were located in an apartment building and then moved somewhere else in Jerusalem. The dentist I had before they moved to where they are now left and then had another and did not like him at all and then had a female and she left and then the one I have now that I have not seen in ages is mine now if he is still there. My dental hygienist is interesting and love to talk to her and she asks about my mobility scooter because i used to bring it but until we move I can walk. When we move I will be using it a lot. She asks about my cat. She has a dog.

I hope all goes well at your appointment later this week! We are fortunate to have dental insurance, but otherwise I know dental costs can be sky high. Life story - yes, that is exactly it. I literally get the whole autobiography. It is difficult when the move or even retire - it's not easy to find a good match in professionals, especially when we loved the original ones. We are lucky if we have professionals who actually treat us like they care - they ask and remember about our lives. I'm glad you have that kind of relationship with your dental hygientist!

I saw my dental hygienist today as well. Evidently I am not doing a good job with my teeth. I think I may have known that. My private dental insurance covers unlimited cleanings so I am going back in three months. See if I can get back in better habits.

I haven't gone lately, but most of them do like to yak away to distract their patients, and to have a captive audience..

The sad part is you cannot even react and say something (lol) My Dentist would deliberately tease me and ask me a question (lol)

My hygienist and dentist don't talk much. That's way too much conversation for me!!! Enjoy your day.
