Question: Do you think Santa should give more presents to poor children than to rich children?

I was having my class with one of my students online today. All of a sudden, she asked me this question. I told her that children around the world should have equal presents from the Father of Christmas. Then she was insisting that rich children should not have more presents because they have everything in life. Instead, the poor ones should. I explained to her that every child should be treated equally. How will you respond to this kid's query?

Genuinely can't think of an answer I agree that father christmas should treat kids equally for sure. But, that being said, the rich kids would be getting stuff from their parents whereas the poor kids may not. Interesting question and not as simple as it first appears in my opinion

I was caught off guard when she asked me this question. The panic mode did not pull me down, and I answered the most sensible statements in my mind.

I have sentiments about this matter. When my siblings and I were kids, our father's siblings treated us unequally by giving us fewer presents or not at all as compared to our cousins. Of course, we were kids, and this mattered to us before. As we grew older, my siblings and I accepted the fact that they really did not like us.

@Shavkat - I know what you mean. I have seen that happening in many families.

@LadyDuck Now, we do not need to deal with them anymore. We ended the relationship before the pandemic. What is the use of being connected with them?

This is a priceless act that I want to do in the future. The only thing that sticks in my mind is transferring my skills to others, which I did in Tajikistan. Now, they are still using what I have taught them until now, which is to treat people with disabilities (PWD).

@allknowing I agree. Being Santa can be done in many forms. I have not tried to join a volunteer acts with this kind of activity yet.

The same way you did. Children are the same so should be treated the same.

I agree. Unfortunately, it does not happen in the real world. Perhaps she had seen this act within her family circles or community.

@DaddyEvil I assumed that she compared herself to her friends or classmates. In China, it is their custom to give lucky envelopes to their young ones, and the amount of money depends on how much is given.

@Shavkat Yeah, I know... Kids with parents who can afford more usually give more to their kids at birthdays and Christmas.

I think every child should be treated equally. There are charities which give presents to poor kids.

I also think so. It was so heartbreaking to see young ones who cannot have presents. I am sure different organizations or charities are planning to give something for these poor kids, especially the orphans.

You did well my friend. That is a tough one to try to teach. It shows how adults should be careful how they act around kids. They very observant and seem to know more about life at that young age than many adults.

@Shavkat I notice that too, world does not let kids be kids like when I was a kid. I am not sure your age, but in my day we roamed free and did not come home till dark. Kids these days cannot go anywhere in this country, not in a urban setting anyway. They get driven to school, we always walked, to dangerous here now.

@crossbones27 in my country, it depends if the child is studying in private or public schools. Most parents drive their kiddies to private schools. During my time, we walk and commute to schools.

I was also surprised when she asked me this particular questions. Nowadays, kiddies think like adults.

Why not, Rebecca? I am sure we can still have a great Christmas. We still have time to make it great. We have more time to work on it.

You are so right on this. I can still remember how my father's siblings treated us before. We were given an unequal amount of presents as compared to our cousins during our childhood years. My biological parents were to the rescue and gave us more presents, not to hate relatives. But then, we can still feel their hate for us, and they are even not going to give us presents to show how cruel they were before.

@jstory07 This is always what I think at a young age. Before the pandemic, we decided to end the familial relationship with them. Lately, they are trying to reach out. But I don't entertain it now.

How old was the child? My response would be appropriate for the child's age and the level of their belief in Santa.

She was a 7-year-old girl. I agree that it depends on a child's age. She still believes in Santa.

I agree with you, but I do think poorer kids are more appreciative of gifts than richer kids. I think a good tradition for children who receive more than others is to take one of their own presents to donate to a child in need, but Father Christmas should treat every child equally.

For some rich kids, they are so open-minded.They tend to ask their parents to share their blessings to less fortunate ones.

I would explain to them that since Santa is mommy and daddy, if mommy and daddy are poor, their presents will be dependent on what they can afford. lol
