Guess what? It’s Derby Festival Time. That means it also means it’s “get the heck out of Dodge” time. Where am I heading? I’ll let you know when I decide! I’ve already decided on the top ten list of songs that are celebrating their 40th birthday this year, and here’s the next song from 1984 on the list. Oh, will you just look at who’s showing up…. #7: Sad Songs (Say So Much) - Elton John And we have yet another song that my dear mother of blessed memory loved. She liked a lot of Elton John’s songs. (Of course, I was a smart kid back when he was my teenybopper idol and didn’t play her things like “The B*tch is Back” or “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” ) This is also an example of Elton’s longevity. (If you’re interested, he’ll also be on the 1974 list…even if you aren’t interested, he’s on the 1974 list. ) We’re talking about a song that was released fourteen years after his first hit (“Your Song”), and it made the top five. Most people are has-beens 14 years into their career. (Heck, some people are forgotten 14 months after a “big hit”!) I remember Jim Reeves saying in an interview that he loved singing sad songs. Elton’s right: there’s something about them, and “you’ll feel their gentle touch.” Sad Songs (Say So Much) Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin Recorded by Elton John From Breaking Hearts, 1984 When all hope is gone:

@LindaOHio — sad to see Elton getting old so rapidly (his hip/back problem that makes him sit on stage and get help walking).

@FourWalls Yes, always. Watched a documentary about Elton and Bernie receiving the Gershwin Award. A bunch of singers did versions of their songs. It was pretty good.

Yes, and in the 1990s it was used in a commercial with the jingle, “Sassoon says so much.” It was five years before I knew it was a take on an Elton John song.

Can’t believe the cash flow got that low at Elton’s house that he’d allow that. ESPECIALLY with hair product, which he never used because he’s bald!

@FourWalls It was really catchy too. Did he have hair at all in the 90s?

@AmbiePam — that’s a transplant (or a wig…I think it’s an implant or transplant, though), and he’s had that since the late 80s.
