Welcome Henry!

For several years now we have had vacuum-cleaner problems. I used to have an older model, I think it was Electrolux, which I bought second hand and it worked just fine. But when we were doing some work on our last house, which necessitated taking down the crumbling lath-and-plaster ceiling, the huge amount of dust that generated just overwhelmed the poor thing and it expired. We were in urgent need of a replacement so we had to rush to the nearest electrical shop where we were shown several makes and models. However unlike when buying a second-hand model privately (when I got to try out the vacuum cleaner before agreeing to buy it) we couldn’t try any out and the staff member basically knew nothing about any of the models other than what it said on the label. So we bought a Dyson, as they had a good reputation. That was a mistake. I was convinced that machine had it in for me, it would do anything to avoid sucking up what I actually wanted to clean up but would go out of its way to annoy me, for example it would suck in the curtains but when I pulled them out of the nozzle the cobwebs would still be on them. It would suck up the carpet without removing any fluff or hair. It would trip me up or fall on me whenever it could. I think it fractured my toe once when I was trying to vacuum the car. And it was very noisy. Next we bought a Vax, which doubles as a carpet-washing machine. This has similar maddening features to the Dyson with the added annoyance that it is even noisier. It states on the box that it produces 89 dB (the limit for a workplace is 90 dB and anything over 70 is considered damaging to hearing). Whoever was using it would need ear defenders and the rest of us would have to leave the house or be shut in one room with the door closed, and preferably some intervening door also closed. This was quite a problem because my partner generally does (or is supposed to do) the vacuuming. But he’s at work during the day all week, and evenings are often busy, so the only available time is at weekends when either we might all be away somewhere, or if we are at home we can’t stand the noise, and no-one can do what they want as we all have to leave the house. Finally, the hose on that is starting to break apart so instead of replacing the hose, he agreed to look for something quieter. These little ‘Henry’ models seem to have a good reputation and they are used by many commercial cleaning companies, so I managed to convince him that we should get one of those. He even bought the ‘eco’ model. Hallelujah! It’s so lovely and quiet! It wheels around behind the operator like a little pet. And it sucks up the fluff, dust and cobwebs. I’m so pleased. The girls are happy too. They came home from school, heard the vacuum and started to bellow ‘HELLOOO’ then realised they didn’t have to! Should have got one years ago. Do you think household appliances are too noisy? I’m convinced they must be contributing to the rising levels of hearing problems. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

I'd have bought it simply because it had cute eyes! I have a stick vacuum but every once in a while I crank up the bigger, stronger one. The noise level isn't too bad. Just every house we house-sat had a Dyson. Anyone who's anyone - if you get my drift - has one here.

If you like the cute eyes, Judy, you might prefer the Hetty version. ‘She’ is pink and has eye lashes.

@JudyEv Unfortunately Hetty can’t flutter her eye lashes or it would have been a cert.

@Orson_Kart Oh wow! Really? I'll have to suss Hetty out. Maybe I could interest Vince in vacuuming if we had a Hetty.

I have seen lots of Henrys and the occasional Hetty at work places. They are obviously a good workhorse for dirty environments. They might be good at cleaning, but are bulky and you need a large broom cupboard to store it. The long hose must be very difficult to deal with, plus you’ve got bags to buy. I prefer the cordless Dyson. I agree that they are noisy, but as I am partially deaf (not from using the Dyson I may add!), it doesn’t bother me. Is the eco one smaller? That might be ok. I know the price of a Dyson is crazy now. I remember when ‘hoovers’ were very cheap. Now it’s as expensive, if not more, than a decent washing machine. Did you know that the face was put on to stop cleaners, who worked early mornings or late nights on their own, from being lonely? A bit like Wilson did for Tom Hanks in Castaway. What a great idea!

It's not that big, its smaller than the Vax and a similar sort of size to the Dyson but a nicer shape. And the hose is no worse than the others either. And it has a longer power cord (just used it yesterday to hoover my car and I didn't need an extension lead). I certainly didn't know that about the face!

@Fleura You must be talking about the corded type. The cordless are much more compact and great for vacuuming the car. The biggest downside that I encounter is emptying the ‘dust’ out. The dust goes everywhere, so bags win in this way. I think the biggest winner here is your partner. His reluctance to do the chores has resulted in you taking action and falling in love with ‘your’ Henry.

@Orson_Kart Oh I don't think I'd go that far! It just means he'll be able to do the vacuuming more often because we won't all be yelling at him to shut up and go away!

India is basically too noisy. We Indians tend to talk at higher decibels. We talk a lot too. We have plenty to argue about as well. Needless to say our gadgets ape us. I have been looking at various models of sweep and mop units. I am waiting for the right one that will not be an issue for its consumables. Prices have come down, and are continuing to come down. I do have a vacuum cleaner, but I feel in India, the effectiveness is lower because of more dust as the distance from roads is minimal. Unlike us, you all seem to maintain some distance from roads. We also do not have business districts which means, more traffic. So if I vacuum today, by evening the house has fair amount of dust, so I need to vacuum everyday. That is why those vacuum sweeping and mopping units that do not require me to move the plug from one room to another. I can afford to wait another three to four years for the right one to come along. But I am mighty glad you found the right one. Hopefully it was more affordable than Dyson and Vax,

I'm sure you are right about the dust, where we live now we don't have much passing traffic, and plenty of grass and trees around to catch the dust before it gets in. We do get mud and pine needles though!

We had one too but compared to our loyal broom I felt it was a lot mainting it.

For a hard floor I agree, simple is best. I also have a little manual carpet sweeper that I use just to pick up bits most days, to stop stuff spreading everywhere.

Your little Henry is adorable I'm glad you finally found a vacuum that isn't so noisy and does the job. I think seeing that smiling face would make vacuuming much more fun.

I have had a mini Dyson for about 12 years, so far so good. My mum uses a Henry vacuum still

Yes, a lot of things are too noisy and some appliances are starting to revolt and doing everything they can to get rid of us... I hope Henry behaves himself.

Henry looks cute and I am glad that it's quiet. I think that most ousehold appliances are too noisy, particularly the vacuum cleaners.

I'm glad you found a vacuum that ticks off all your boxes...and it's cute too! Many household appliances are too noisy. When our refrigerator makes ice you can hear it all over the house. Have a good evening.
