I was driving to the gym a few hours ago and I saw so many drivers with only one hand on the wheel and this topic came to mind. I drive with both hands on the wheel as of now since I got my Driver's License very recently. I am a cautious driver and don't want to be too casual lest things go wrong. I'm still not comfortable with letting go of one hand. I've seen many women doing their make up while driving..phew,I'm not up for it yet! How do you drive..with one hand on the wheel or both?

I'm pretty casual about driving and I often rest one hand on the gear-shift. I only put both hands on the wheel if I need to manoeuvre the car or if I drive at speeds exceeding 100mph. One thing I never do, however, is answer my mobile while driving. I may look like a care-free driver, but I still need all my concentration to remain on the road in case of emergency.

I use both hands unless on long trips, then I will use one hand while the other rests on my leg or the gear shift next to my seat. In traffice, both hands are on the wheel. I always keep my eyes on the road though, no cell phone use, or even talking to others while looking at them in the mirror or turning my head.

That is very good sunshine, I think we should all learn a few things from others. Some think the road belongs to them and they don't care how they drive, they don't realize they are not only putting themselves in danger but others too!

I use my both hand while driving and I am very cautious about it. I don't want to talk over cell phone during driving time, make up is far away.

I think that i drive both ways but i am very cautious and i always be sure to drive safe. I would have to say that i am a very experienced driver and i know the wheel rather well. I use one hand at times but if it is busy or the roads or bad or even if i am passing i use two hands and i dislike when woman tend to put their make up on while driving that is very dangerous! My little sister does this and she drives me crazy!

Aw tell me about it..day before, my husband and I were on the highway and there was a lady in a car in the lane next to us and she was busy doing her makeup looking directly into her rear view mirror! I was so shocked and was wondering why the make up couldn't wait and was it more important than safety?!

always be careful while driving! It's very dangerous to distract yourself and do other things while driving! I'm very careful while I'm driving. I am not so a newbie...because I have my car driving license from 8 years and I can drive small cars or bigger ones without problems. Anyway if the road is straight sometimes I drive with only one hand on the wheel. I do this if I need to change radio station (but always looking at the road...never at the car stereo!) or change gear. When you do curves, you MUST use two hands, it's much better. When it rains or there is snow or other critical wheater conditions, always drive with two hands and never run with your car!

i only drive with one hand. while i was in driver's ed they made you use both hands but i feel more comfortable with just one. i don't do my makeup or anything while i'm driving because that is very hazardous. but if you're watching what you're doing and use one hand it'll be fine. if somethings gonna go wrong it's gonna go wrong whether you have one hand or both on the wheel.

Hmm well that's true but somebody didn't coin "a stitch in time saves nine" for nothing! Maybe we should be cautious too.

I always drive with both hands on the steering wheel. I have been in a couple of accidents, and I know how quickly they can happen, so I try to drive defensively. Women who put on their makeup while they are driving are very foolish. Also people who talk on their cell phones, eat, drink or do other things while they are driving. They are putting their own lives and other people's lives in danger.

I only drive with one hand on the wheel, for the most part. If I am in heavy traffic, however, I will use both. People can't drive in this city and they do crazy stuff at the last minute (like zip right from the left lane, across 3 lanes of traffic, in less than 100 yards to make a right hand turn). My second hand is nearby in case something happens, but I generally only drive with one.

Yes I do. But I am learning to drive. My sister on occasion takes her hand off the wheel to get something with one hand while stopped. But we do drive on sometimes have to and she drives okay with one hand. But its rare and she doesnt do it for too long. I think its better both hands, what is it 10 & 2 right? :))

Well as long as she can manage with one hand that's fine..yup its 10 & 2,I had no idea about that till I read many others mention this. I drive a auto gear car and hence this rule doesn't refer to me I guess! I knew driving before so all I had to do here was to familiarize myself with the rules.

Hello greengal, Driving is a skill that can be developed over time. Your car becomes the extension of yourself once you have mastered the machine. It is like your servant that should obey everything that you want it to do. I have been driving for 15 years and per experience, it is better to drive with both hands and focus 100% on the wheels because with just one mistake, our life will be at stake. I have to admit though that there are instances that I drive with only one hand when I need to adjust the radio or the mirror. This also happens when i need to eat something while on the road. But this should be very seldom otherwise, our safety is endangered.

Yes I drive with both hands on the Wheel I have had my License now for 24 Years and I still use both hands on the Wheel. Actually I don't know how People can drive with one hand on the Wheel Constantly. When I am on the Motorway, then sometimes I will give my Arm a rest lol but not for long about 2 minutes and then both hands are back on the Wheel.

Great question! I have to use both hands too. I can hardly change the radio station while driving without being completely nervous. I never use a cell phone while driving either. Well only once because I had to but I always call my parents or whatever befoe I start the drive.

you probably have a car with automatic shift so you can stay with both hands on the wheel but if you drive a car with manual shift in the city you will have to change gear a lot and you can't stay with both hands on the wheel

I am just like you and i also drive my car with both hands.Ialso realy cautious while driving. As you said early that many women do their make while driving(which is dangerious i think)some people have some talk n phone while driving which is also very dangerious. so people should not do such things which are injurious to their health. while driving i think people should use handsfree kit for their cellphones.

haven't been driving a lot nowadays but yes I ride around a lot... In crowded places I definitely use both hands but in places where the traffic is thin and there are almost no chances of a mishap I use one hand
