She's done it again, and the fridge has been open for almost an hour now:-(

Moomin - Please don't be cross Mum, I'm so cute
May 16, 2007 4:20am CST
Moomin has figured out how to open the fridge door. A couple of days ago she managed to get the door open and she helped herself to our ham, having knocked a lot of other things out of the fridge in the process. I went to make a coffee and there she was, sitting on the kitchen floor munching on some cold chicken I had put by for this evening's dinner. She has managed to get into the fridge, again, and this time the carton of milk is also on the floor so little madam has chicken and milk, and I have black coffee and a fridge that has been wide open for at least an hour - grrrrr. She's far too intelligent for her own good, so I guess I need to figure a way of stopping her getting into the fridge. Any ideas people?

How is she doing this? Do you have something that she can pull the door open with? My cats are very clever, but not strong enough to pull open the door. Are you sure the door is getting completely closed?

I think she is hooking her claws into the bottom of the seal and hanging onto it, her weight is making the door open. Crafty little minx - LOL

OKAY then... Well, I lived in a rental & the slum lord brought over a fridge that was probably as old as I was with one of those doors that actually latched shut. Within about 6 months the latch failed & when he didn't replace it, the roomie & I tied a huge strap around the thing to tie the door shut - didn't keep things very cold, but I'd bet it'd keep your cat out of it!

My partner phoned and suggested we move the fridge up and put the freezer at the bottom instead of the way it is now. At least that we she shouldn't be able to get to the fridge. :-) She's out in the back garden right now, looking in at me as if she knows she's in trouble :-)

I use to have a cat that would flush the toliet all night so I know how it can be. The only thing I can think of is that they make locks for your cabinets and your fridge. I knwo that when my children was younger I had to put a slide locking system on my fridge. That way they wouldnt get hurt with things falling out. Try that. You can find them in any department store in the baby section and that should solve your problem. Good luck.

Ok, not being a cat, I cant figure out why it would want to flush the toliet all night. That is behavior I have never seen before.

First let me say she's beautiful and I just love the pic you posted. My suggestion would be to get one of those child proof locks like you'd use for a toddler. That way it will still be easy for you to get in but not her.I myself am a cat person and have had many but none so smart.Well maybe the current one is she's just too dignified to do such a thing for herself.;-)

Thank you, yes she is gorgeous and far too smart :-) Thanks for the suggestion hun

Oh my goodness that sounds SOO cute! I'm sure it's not so cute when you're the mother of the little minx and in charge of maing sure the food doesn't spoil lol. I think the velcro idea sounds best to me. I really have no idea what else to do. I would suggest installing a loc, but I don't know if the integrity of the fridge would stand up to getting a lock drilled into it. Good luck!

Moomin is a very cute little cat, far too clever for her own good sometimes. I think the velcro idea might be a good plan and I am looking into getting one of the childproof fridge latches too

Having no interest in children, I had no idea they made those. I guess that would work, too.

Hmm, how nice for you. I thought it was bad enough having a 4yr old son opening the fridge door and looking for a while, but at least I can tell him to get out of it and shut the door! I believe there are fridge locks specially designed to keep kids out, I'm sure it would work for Moomin as well!! I have to add, I think she has good taste, chicken and milk!!
16 May 07
LOL she has excellent taste, she had the ham out the other morning. I will definitely be looking for a fridge lock today

As someone else said, definately get one of the fridge latches that they use to keep kids out of the fridge. Aren't animals funny, though. My pup, who is almost as tall as I am, taught himself how to open the back door. i woke up a 2 in the morning and the door was wide opened and Shadow was running around the back yard chasing bats.

ROTF - did Shadow manage to catch any of the bats? It never ceases to amaze me just how intelligent animals can be, opening doors is quite an easy trick by all accounts. Thanks hun

Ah! You seem to have forgotten that when you bought the fridge, it came with a pair of keys to lock its door. Then, the solution is there. Just lock the door after you have used it. It is a bit of botheration, though. Even if Moomin sees you operate the lock, she can not do the same.
16 May 07
Our fridge doesn't have a lock hun, so I can't lock it up. She's a little minx, still sitting here licking her lips :-)

lol Looks like a lot of ppl already suggested what I was thinking, child locks on the fridge. Being Moomin is a clever lil minx, velcro won't work for long. She'll figure that out soon enough. I have a cat that figured out velcro 10min. after I installed it on a spare room door we used to have. He knows how to turn knobs so would help himself to his food that we kept there. I velcroed the door shut and I watched the lil devil figure out how to undo it. lol Good luck with your cat. Sounds like your gonna need it.

Clever little perishers aren't they. I wish I had been quicker and grabbed the camera and caught Moomin out. She won't be able to try that trick now though, we moved the fridge so it is higher up.

LOL! Boots do some child locks for fridges. You can get them from poundshops and stuff sometimes as well. Unless you can find a way of keeping her out of the kitchen I think this is your only option! But I'm sure with a personality like that your little Moomin will soon find more trouble to get herself in to! Good luck!

She had a go at pulling the door of the freezer and couldn't figure out why she couldn't open it. Then I went to open the fridge door and, as it is now out of her reach, she can't try that trick again. However, she gave me such a look as if to say, *busted*

my blue has done this-and went grazing himself. the seal was going bad on the fridge,so it was just weak enough for him to pull open. i took some duct tape and made a new "hinge" from the door to the side of the fridge so it was a little bit harder for him to get open. it was kind of a pain in the butt to have to peel it everytime i opened the fridge, but i was afraid he was going to trap himself in there before i got the seal changed out.
17 May 07
My other half and I moved the fridge out last night and put the freezer in its place. Then we lifted the fridge and put it on top of the freezer, Moomin can't get at it now :-) It was quite surprised how easy it was for her to open the door, just by hanging on it.

yea .. cats are very intelligent. I'll tell you a story about my cat. One day he was playing near my mom ...which was very busy with her cooking , I also had some work, and my cat touched the ofen. I didn't see what happen to him in the first day but after a while I was scared when I saw that he didn't had the left mustache . After few weeks his left mustache was like right mustache. I don't know what you can do with your cat.

I must not allow my cat Anubis see this discussion; it would give him too many ideas. He is fascinated by the whole concept of doors and dark places. If I am not careful, he hops in the fridge when I open it. Heaven forbid, he figures out how to do it himself.

Cats are often far too intelligent for their own good hun, at least Moomin has been foiled now. I'm sure it won't be long before she figures out something else, like maybe driving the car - LOL

then you can put locks on your fridge. We have one (HITaCHI)that you can have the keys to open it. OR you can also buy a spray so your cat wont go to that area. I think u can check this one on supermarkets/groceries...

Moomin is one smart kitty, my max will try and enter the fridge as soon as you open the door, he'll climb up the shelves if you don't catch him in time! but so far he hasn't worked out how to open the door yet.! I think you best bet is to get a safety catch/lock as others have suggested, or you could come home one day to no food in the fridge!!

lol oh deaar honey she is a little minx isn't she! I have come into this discussion blind, via email so I don't know what others have been saying but my advice is to take a little trip to the nearest mothercare type shop! You get little fridge locks there which are made to stop kids getting into the fridge (a bit like cupboard locks for little fingers!) Would be very surprised if they had been used to stop a cat raiding the fridge before but there you go! hee hee

LOL she's busted now hun. The fridge is now sitting on top of the freezer and I know she won't be able to open the freezer door. I wish I had been quicker off the mark and grabbed the camera, if nothing else for the expression on her face when we caught her. :-)

Oh she never! That is the one thing I say about cats and dogs alike, "Thank god they don't have a thumb! Think of all the mischief they would get into!" While I can't guess how she is doing it, I have seen fridges padlocked (not because of cats). It would be drastic, but it would work.
