While formatting my computer, I see there are two file systems, one is FAT32 and other NTFS. What is the difference those file systems? Which file system should I opt to format? Please help to take the prudent decision.

If you use big file (over 4 Gb) you must use ntfs, else is possible to use fat32. Fat32 is the best if you are in your pc 2 or more OS

Definitely NTFS, it's new, better and faster. FAT and FAT32 were for old operating systems like 98 and older.

NFTS is newer then FAT32 when it comes to indexing your files. NFTS is better on large harddrives while FAT32 is actually faster on smaller ones. So if you have a large hardrive i would go with NFTS and if it is a small one like 2 GB i owuld go with FAT32 jsut beacuse it is faster.

The better file system for formatting the system is NTFS.It is only the better file system.I suggest you to use NTFS only for formatting.

I use Win XP with the FAT32 simply because some of my games are older and will not work on NTFS. If you do not have any old games or any other programs that depend on FAT32, then NTFS is the best way. Win XP will run on either format.

If you happen to have a linux machine in your network that your trying to share files with, fat32 is a safter route because linux os's can read and write to it. NTFS is still under beta for read write compatibility for linux OS's although it is possible. If your network only consists of windows PC, I would definetly go the NTFS route as most have mentioned! just my 2 cents.

If you are using windows xp (which most be the case) then the best choice is NTFS. FAT32 is an outdated files system, that was used in windows 98 and 95. NTFS support files with a bigger size and have enhanced security system.

I dont think you can install windows xp onto a NTFS drive though. I recently bought a new pc and there was a 80gig hard drive in it and it was in the NTFS format. When i went to install windows xp it reminded me that i needed to format the hard drive and convert it if you like into the FAT32 system type before it let me continue with the installation. I had formatted the hard drive before attempting to install windows so its nothing to do with that. I also partioned the hard drive and now i have my Windows files in drive c, which is in the FAT32 format and i have my drive d which is in the NTFS format.

FAT32 (File Allocation Table, 32-bit) is the file system used by Windows 98 and Windows Me. It limits file size to 4 GB. Windows XP gives you the option to use the FAT file system because a lot of people upgraded from 98 and Me. But NTFS (New Technology File System) is the format that is native to Windows NT, 2K, and XP. It allows for larger file sizes and improved security. The account permissions and drivers are configured differently. NTFS has the "ring zero" kernel, giving certain drivers precedence over others. Use this one.

It depends on what OS you are going to load. If you are using Windows XP or higher then formatting NTFS will give you better results. NTFS partitions in hard disk runs also in good speed and are easily manageable. But if you are using Win 9x or older then FAT 32 is the best. For a new harddisk formatting first time we can do through FAT32 because it offers good partitioning options.
