1000 pounds??

Ok before I go any further I would like everyone to know that I am overweight as are several members of my family. This discussion is not meant to insult but rather I am really curious. How on earth do you get to 1000 pounds? I mean I know it is easy to gain weight; that isn't what my question is. Once you get to a certain size you can't get out of bed. Once that happens why would you stay there and continue to gain weight. If I ever got to the point where I was so obese that I couldn't get out of bed that would tell me that I MUST do something to lose weight! Then on top of that; what about the people bringing them their food? What is wrong with them? I mean really your friend/spouse/whatever is unable to get out of bed because they are so heavy, why are you giving in to them and giving them what they want? It isn't like they can get out of bed and hurt you or anything. As I said I am NOT trying to be insulting, hurtful or anything!! This is something I have often wondered about and seeing a program on tv right now about a man that is 1000 pounds made me think to ask here. PLEASE forgive me if I have offended anyone. It really was not my intent.

OMG, I was wondering the same thing! I've been a bit overweight since I had my son, but when I realized I gained more AFTER his birth, I started trying to get rid of it. It's probably the second hardest thing to do, first being quitting smoking. But I lost a few pounds, so I'm wondering how you can see yourself climbing to that mark without attempting to reverse it. I know there really are food addictions, but you'd think a person would get help when they realized they can't make it up or even down a flight of stairs! Blessed Be

I was thinking the same thing the other day! Sometime you just get depressed and down and out and can't or won't get help until its to late. Its sad and I know I'm overweight plus the meds I was taking made me crave foods I wouldn't normally eat so I stopped taking my meds and haven't been eating a lot. maybe this was a problem

I think once we are talking about someone over say 350ish pounds, we're talking severe mental health issues. My ex MIL isn't more than 5 feet tall and I'd guess she's in the 350-400 range. Still able to get out of bed, and out of the house; but not able to get through doorways unless she stands sideways. It's really sad & my ex had such a hard time dealing with it. She has been diagnosised as schizophrenic for oh 20 years or more now. She has extreme paranoid periods, some very anti-social behaviors and the weight for her is just another piece of her illness. The weight keeps people away from her. When she's in a healthy mind space, she's a very generous, sweet & lovable woman but those periods are not long lasting & not predictable. So even if she wanted to address the weight when she is in one of those periods, it's not long enough to have much impact. I'm sure if she ever got to a size where she couldn't get out of bed, her husband would have been right there providing food for her. He actually passed away a few years back. But he catered to her in every way. He was a great person but just the classic enabler; wanted to keep the peace, keep her happy, prevent her episodes, etc.

I've wondered that for YRS....I've seen over the past 15-20 yrs talk shows about ppl like that and of course Whats Eating Gilbert Grape (movie) as well and OTHER THAN a serious medical condition (though I couldnt imagine one that would cause THAT MUCH of a wt gain) I cant quite understand it either...I mean at 5'9" I peaked at 205 last summer and that is the largest I've ever been in my life and I HATED IT...I mean I'll most likely never be 130-135 again but damn I couldnt imagine what it'd be like to be AN EXTRA 100-150 lbs let alone another 600LBS!!! I mean you'd think that once you start have SERIOUS trouble getting out of the bed, you'd realize something is amiss and do somethgn about it ya know... As for the ppl who bring buckets of fried chicken, chips, cheesies, pop etc etc...Someone needs to give them a SLAP good and hard....I'm all for doing things for the ones you love etc but IF YOU REALLY LOVED THEM you would contribute to their oncoming heartattack/liver failure/stroke or any other medical concern for ppl that size..... I think what really really kills me though is these parents who have kids that are only 2-3 yrs old and they already weigh 150lbs BUT THEY STILL GIVE THESE KIDS ALL THIS CRAP FOOD EVERY HR ON THE HR!!..WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?? Don't get me wrong..My daughter is overweight BUT at least we've been doing something about it ya know....not just food/healthy choices wise but emotionally too (shes an emotional eater so when her father killed himself rather than talk about it etc she would comfort herself with food and her wt just skyrocketed within a yr)..I DONT WANT my daughter to die of a heartattack before turning 20 ya know..how can these parents be ok with whats goin on with their children???

Well, i think if anhyone was offended by this they are being overly sensitive. i agree with you. i don't know how anyone can get to be that big. i weigh about 125 and i am trying desperately to loose weight. i used to weigh 108, so this is a lot for me. i am only about 5 feet tall. i don't know why people will bring food to someone who is so fat they cannot get out of bed. i never would. i mean, i would bring them what was necessary, but no more. It would be for their own good.

I do not understand this either. however I saw a documentary ones about men WANTING their wives/girlfriends to gain weight and with this almost killed them. they were all in bed all day and he brought her food - fat food and all she sis was eat anmd the fatter she got, the more happy he got.. That is just sick and I consider it to be abuse... really!! I think reaching 1000 pounds is something that should be impossible and these people need help BEFORE they reach that far. When u are that heavy it is hard to loose it and ever have a normal life. Imagine all the organs in your body, the heart is really workingon overtime here =(

I agree. I can't imagine trying to lose weight from 1000 pounds. It would take me longer than I have to live. I would have to do something drastic like surgery. I would be very depressed.

i weigh 150 lbs and to some that might be a normal weight. but living in an asian country, im considered obese. ive done eveyrhting to at least shed some pounds, and thankfully my hard work is paying off. i think you can accomplish whatever it is you want to achieve for as long as you put your mind to it. it really boggles me soemtimes when i see stories about morbidly obese people weighing more than 500 lbs. and then they complain about being fat but they're not doing anything. they continue to let go until they're beyond help.

Well at least a 1000lb man won't be able to mate - well at least without AI. So the genes can be stopped right there. Smae with a mega fat woman I suppose like Jimbo45's friend.

There comes a point when it shows that there is some medical problem. I'm not a doctor, but I recall reading about gland disorders that can cause such an extreme case. Not bringing food to such a person will not solve such a problem, but would cause malnourishment. If you are talking about a specific person, I would need to know more specifics, but it would only be my layman's opinion and not based on medical fact, which can only be found with a medical examination by a qualified practitioner.

That kind of reminds me of a man who I used to care for in the nursing home. I don't know how much he weighed in pounds, but he was well over 30 stone ... hold on, let me work it out .... roughly 420 pounds. He was confined to his room and he spent the day in a specially designed wheelchair and a huge bed at night, though he was propped up on many pillows. The nursing home had like a winch thing that was used to lift him into his wheelchair each morning. To have three or four members of the staff lift him would be putting themselves at risk. I have no idea how anyone could get to 1000 pounds. It just doesn't seem possible! There are so many health problems that come from being less than half that weight, and quite frankly, to even be alive at 1000 pounds is quite a feat! I think if someone gets to that point, their family and spouse have maybe given up all hope of ever having their loved one change. To that extent, they feed them and care for them just the same, because to NOT bring them food isn't going to make a difference to their weight.

"The nursing home had like a winch thing that was used to lift him into his wheelchair each morning. To have three or four members of the staff lift him would be putting themselves at risk" oh hell ya! I had to use a manual lift to get my ex in and out of bed (paralyzed) and I could have lifted him on my own since he was skinny but he was a deadweight..I wouldnt even DREAM of trying to lift someone the size you mentioned who could wiggle and whatnot with 3 other ppl...its too damn dangerous...not just for the lifters but for the one being lifted too really.

A young friend of mine in nursing school did a rotation at a major teaching hospital told me that they have designed a lift that they use on absolutely anyone who can't transfer themselves to a chair, no matter the patient's size. In the first 18 months these things were in use, they had a significant drop in employee injuries and lost time, they are projected to pay for themselves within 3 years. I worked in nursing homes 25 years ago, and the doctor who did a scan of my lower back last year knew it as soon as he saw my scan. I was a big, strong worker that everyone wanted help lifting from, and I had more lumbar-sacral "strains" than I can count! These lifts are a wonderful thing, except possibly for the occasional patient of normal size who gets offended when they get the lift out.

I have seen a tv show similar to this one...and I wondered the same thing...there really does not appear to be any logical reasoning behind allowing oneself to reach this weight....I am not trying to appear unfeeling either... My family would make me so miserable that I would want to get out of bed just to show them.....they would proabably feed me stuff I hated just so I would want to get up...LOL I do not know what they would seriously do to improve the situation but they would not just stand by and let me get to this point in my life.... I do not understand it either, my friend....

It is really a sickness. Of course, no one would like to be as heavy as 1000lbs. Most of these obese people are really trying to lose weight. It's not that easy though.

Most people that are morbidly obese have some underlying symptom that caused them to gain the weight in the first place. The problem is, people that are that heavy can't get out of bed, let alone get a job. Then there's no money, no insurance. So, they'll obviously get put on disability and draw a monthly check through their state. That doesn't mean they get free money. Most times that's just enough to take care of their bills. Not to mention medical bills. But, if they can't get out of bed, they can't be seen by a doctor. No doubt, that this was negligence on their part in the first place. But, I can understand why they are they way at the time and can't do much about it. I agree with you about the people bringing them their food. They should be replacing their original meals with healthier ones. The person lying in bed should do anything they possibly can. Grab a can of corn! Lift it like you're lifting weights. Anything is possible to those who apply themselves. One thing I have learned about weight issues. In 3 months, no dieting, no exercising, I have lost 13 pounds. How? No sodas. Just water and sometimes tea. I also refrain from sitting down with a box of HoHo's! That part was common sense. But, it also let's me know that if I'll just find a way to get more exercise in my day, I'll lose even more and probably faster than I did in those 3 months. It's really sad when people get into that situation where they can't do anything about it. Hopefully they will see how it's effecting them and the people who love them.

even the morbidly obese need to eat - you can not live off of your fat stores, before the fat goes the muscle will go if you are not getting protein your body will find its own source within. guess what that means? it will also attack your organs, which will make it even more difficult to get out of the bed. I think such persons should get our compassion not ridicule and judgements.

I am niether ridiculing nor passing judgement. I am curious as to why someone allows themselves to gain that much. I don't think it is a laughing matter at all.

I am addicted to watching the show "Big Medicine". Like you I have wondered what causes someone to get so big that they aren't able to get out of bed. The storyline I am most concerned about is the one about Allen. It looks like he is on the right path as long as he doesn't give up. I think a lot of the weight gain is do to depression. These people eat when they are upset and food is the way that they can make themselves feel better.

Once you reach a certain point, not only does mobility become difficult, but your metabolism slows and it takes fewer calories to maintain and even continue gaining. Depression also makes it harder to do anything, and thinking about just how much you need to lose would be overwhelming, I think.

We must watch the same shows.. I watched this too last night. I stared at the screen in amazement. I have been overweight all my life. I even call myself fat. Sure, I'd like to be smaller and wear certain kinds of clothes, but my weight doesn't really bother me. I've stayed about the same weight since I was 15. I love food, but I think there just has to be a point when you or someone who loves you says, "That's enough." Like maybe after the 15th pork chop or before the third pack of hot dogs is opened. I have a brother who is seriously obese and diabetic. When he comes to my house, I offer him diet sodas or water to drink, and non-junk food to eat. He's quite a bit older than me (I was an "oops" later in life for my mom!) and I remember as a kid seeing him put down a heck of a lot of food. He swears now that he doesn't eat much, but he weighs also twice what he did 8 years ago. His wife will give him pretty much whatever he wants. If he asks for 2 or 3 double cheeseburgers and an extra large milkshake, she'll run out and get it. I can't do that. I look at him and think, "He's slowly killing himself." I know I would hope that if I got to that point, someone would love me enough to say no.
