Have you ever been snorkeling or diving? Where?

I love to go snorkeling to see colorful coral and friendly fish. I first did this on Australia's Great barrier Reef. Since then I have swam along with a manta ray the most special thing I have ever seen in the sea and have been amongst sharks. I saw black tipped sharks in French Polynesia and nurse sharks in Belize. I think I would enjoy diving but have not had the confidence to try it yet. Have you ever done some snorkeling? Where? Have you ever been diving? Where? What is the most special thing you have seen in the sea?

I,ve snorkelled in Mexico, Australia, Fiji, Bali & the Gili Islands in Lombok... My most memorable snorkel adventure, was in Tulamban, Bali....a guide took us to see a sunken ship...we snorkelled our way out to it, then spent about 20 mins out there...it was pretty amazing...the ship was covered in sea anaenome, shellfish & coral....there were hundreds of brightly coloured fish, darting here & there...plus 4 or 5 large sharks (apparently they were harmless basking sharks).. However the excitement came when we started to return to shore...I,m not the worlds most confident swimmer, & stupidly popped my head up to see where we were... I was horrified to realise that we were about 200 metres off the beach & immediately began to panic about my ability to swim back that far (totally ignoring the fact that I had easily snorkelled my way out there in the first place).... instead of popping my head back under water & slowly enjoying the view swimming back to shore, I had a panic attack! I had to be towed back to shore by the guide, hyperventilating all the way!!!! It was a very embarrassing episode (blushing thinking about it...lol), but at least I was able to see the funny side of it later....

Thanks for your excellent response. Seeing a sunken ship must be very interesting and snorkeling with basking sharks must have been fun. I say this because even though they are large they are harmless. I know exactly what you mean about popping your head out of the water and getting the shock of where you are. I went to a marine reserve in Samoa. I swam out from the beach looking in the direction of the pole showing where the coral reef began. Due to the tide I moved very quickly and before I knew it I was right out at sea near some boats! It was challenging to get back in towards the beach. I had to go in a semi circle to not get pushed any further out to sea. I was tired when I did get back to the beach. So I can understand your panic attack. Some Germans had to help me back to the boat when I was in the Maldives as the water was just too rough. Oh, it was so embarrassing, but like you, I can now see the funny side of it.

Payar Island - snorkelling in Payar Island
I don't quite enjoy snorkelling but I've snorkelled once on my birthday getaway to Payar Island,Langkawi in Malaysia.I like swimming with the small fishes but I don't quite like the barracudas.

I haven't been diving but my aunty was really into it when she was younger. She took me snorkeling once and it was so beautiful. It's amazing how many fish are so close to you when you're in just the shallow water! We didn't go very far out but I can just imagine that it gets more and more interesting the deeper it gets. It's definitely something I'd like to do more often, however I think diving with the big oxygen tanks would make me feel too claustrophobic!

Yes, being many meters under the sea with a huge oxygen tank on my back might make me feel claustrophobic too. With snorkeling it is easy to check you are when you put your head above water. Many thanks for your response.

I went snorkeling a couple of times in Grand Cayman. It is so beautiful there. The tour I went on the guy throws bread right next to you and all the fish come swimming right up to you. It is so cool I love it. I've never been diving before. I think I'm scared to lol. I hear so many stories and some peoples nose bleeds and all this stuff. If your nose bleeds wouldn't that attract sharks? yikes no thanks

Snorkeling in Grand cayman sounds really beautiful. Yes, I am scared my ears would play up if I went diving... as for bleeding that would be even worse. Many thanks for your response.

I've been snorkeling in Mauritzius. First at this small reef just by the beach at the hotel. There were so many different types of fish there, it felt like swimming in an aquarium. Later that same holiday me and my father went out on a snorkeling expedition a little further out at see, and swam over a city of corals. It was an amazing feeling to be so close to the coral that it felt like you could stand on it, and the next moment the ocean opened up under you into a bottomless canyon. I would love to be able to dive with a manta ray sometime...they are such beautiful creatures.

Wow! That sounds like a wonderful time snorkeling. I can almost picture your amazing description of one moment of being so close to the coral and the next moving into a bottomless canyon. Thanks for your excellent response.

I went snorkeling a few years back. My ship pulled into St Thomas and a few of us got to go and it was great. The water there was so clear and you could just see all the beautiful life that lived in the water. The colors were absolutely amazing.

The Caribbean is a lovely place to go snorkeling. Coral grows in clear water but the manta rays swim in murky water, that is more challenging to see in. Thanks for your response.

I've been snorkeling in Mexico (Cozumel, off the Yucatan Coast) and in Hawaii (The Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai). In Hawaii, you can buy laminated cards that identify all the fish when you are snorkeling. It was awesome. I would love to go to the Great Barrier Reef. It's a long way from me, but it's my goal to get there someday. I signup up for diving lessons, but never went. Would love to learn to dive.

I would really like to buy a laminated card to help me identify all the fish when I am snorkeling. If you go back to Mexico one day Belize is just next door. It has a fantastic reef and the Blue Hole is well known to divers if you do ever learn how to dive. Thanks for your helpful response.

Yes, a couple of times before. Love doing it in Boracay Island here in our country. That picture was taken last March, boy can't get a hold of the waves really. Thats the only thing i can do so far, havent done diving... lots of corals, beautiful reefs really but what i like the most is seeing "finding nemo" fish, they are so colorful i just love them. (",)

I would love to go to the Great Barrier reef or to French Polynesia. Both of those place sound beautiful. I have been both snorkeling and diving in Mexico (Cozumel and Isla de Mujeras), St Lucia in the Caribean, the Dry Tortugas, the Florida Keys and other various places around florida. the good thing about diving lessons is that you learn in a pool. So you can build your confidence up in a safe zone. I mean you aren't more then 8 ft deep. You really should consider it. It's a totally different experience then snokeling.

Yes, I have been snorkeling in the carribean off of St. John's Island. Darn I forgot the name of the bay. It has this coral reef with amazing critters all over the reef to see under water. You cant climb or touch the reef but you can swim all around it. There are even under water signs to tell you what type of fish are in the area. They have these big blue fish (I forgot their name also), but if you hold still, the fish come up to you to investigate. Kinda spooky. Anyhow, it was a great experience.

Wow! I have not seen underwater signs to tell you what sort of fish you see. Yes, the reason people are not allowed to touch the reef is because this would damage it. Coral takes many years to grow. Also coral cuts hurt. Many thanks for your superb response.

I went snorkeling in the Florida Keys with my aunt, uncle, sister and 2 cousins. It was a lot of fun. I was going down to the bottom and picking up stuff (some of it was trash I was just removing). I found a really cool champagne bottle (Dom, as a matter of fact) that had a really neat growth of algae and the beginnings of coral growing on it. I brought it up and we put it in a cooler full of sea water, my aunt and uncle used it in their fish tank. I was also running my hands over some shells on the bottom, and found a baby octopus. It was so cool. Felt really weird on my hands. That same day we were chased by a barracuda, and we went past a beach where everyone was running in from the water. When we got closer we saw that there was a jellyfish in the water about 2 feet in diameter.

It sounds lovely in the Floria Keys. What is a barracuda? I imagine it is a large sort of fish. Anyway it must have been scary to be chased by it and what a huge jelly fish you saw. In Australia there are dangerous box jellyfish in the sea by beaches in North Queensland. Many thanks for this superb response.
