What Do You Do With Your Old Shower Curtain When You Purchase A New One?

When you get a new shower curtain, what do you do with the old one? I suggest that you clean up the old one and store it for many uses. It can be used as a drop cloth for a painting project. You can use it to lay yard sale items on, or as a tarp to cover items with, in your garage, in your yard, or in the back of your truck. We have used it to rake leaves onto thus saving us quite as many trips to the compost pile. It is also great to lay on the floor when you have toddlers just beginning to use crayons and play dough. We have also spread it on the floor under the high chair when we have toddlers visit. Saves alot of clean up work of the floor. Just take the shower curtain outside and hose it off. You might come up with other ideas on using it than I have, as well. What kinds of things do you use your old shower curtains for?

These are really great ideas! I'm planning on replacing my shower curtain soon, so maybe I'll use the one that I have now to put under my son's painting projects. The much larger area than usual would definitely prevent paint from getting all over the carpet... now I just need a way to keep the dog from walking across the painting projects.

I have always saved old shower curatins. I would wash them in the washer with a few towels, they clean up real good. I have glass shower doors now, no more curtains for me.

usually when we need a new curtain it's because the other one is all moldy so we always just throw it away.

I just throw them away. Now matter how much a person scrubs it, there could be spots missed. I'd rather not take any chances as I can get a new one at the dollar store for a buck.

Wow, alot of ideas! I usually just throw mine away. I hate shower curtians, to me they are just plastic covered with filth. I'm such a germ-o-phobe! I like the idea of using it to rake leaves, that's excellent! It will make this Fall so much easier:) Thanks Villageanne!

I agree with you--points for being so frugal. There are a lot of different uses before I would throw it away. One good use would be to keep it in the trunk or under a seat of your vehicle. You can then use it: to lay on when changing a tire, to protect a seat or trunk/truckbed when hauling something messy, protect from rain if a window won't roll up,etc. Keep it to patch up holes in the new one or reinforce when the holes rip at the top. You could actually cut a strip and reinforce this in your new one before hanging it up. Maybe using superglue or sewing it with fishing line. Put one under a tent when camping. Or use it to protect your things that you leave outside from dew. Use in the garage as a dropcloth, to protect things you store, to sit plant/garden things on while in storage. Personally, I like keeping mine in the trunk of my car. You never know when something from the grocery store will make a mess and it keeps things that sweat from getting the trunk wet and also possible staining. I've kept the carpet in my trunk looking new by doing this consistently.

You are so right thats exactly what I do with my old shower curtains. They have come in handy quite a few times.LOL I just recently gave my old one to my husband and he used it to cover the lawn mower because we dont have a shed in the back to store the lawn mower.

We have used a fabric shower curtain. That way we wash it and wash it. Rehang it to dry. Much bette for us in the long run acutally. So far have not had to replace one that wears. The fires have taken care of those. So hopefully third shower curtain is the charm and we can live one using the fabric shower curtain for a long time.

I buy fabric shower curtains.Fabric shower curtains and be washed all the time and they come out great. You can use them for a long time. I just changed mine the other day cause I painted my bathroom a different color, so I bought a different color shower curtain. I took my old shower curtain and gave it to my friend, she wanted it for her shower. It still looked new.

We have no shower curtains anymore- Our shower has a glass door- but in prior houses- we did keep them- I was changing the curtain a lot- Changing up the rugs and curtains make the bathroom look different. We used the old ones for crafts usually- put it on the table for a cloth and pained- used it in the grass for staining. Most of the times it was craft related.

I have only used an old shower curtain to cover up storage and things in our storage compartment. It can get quite dusty down there so I have used one for that. I like the ideas you've mentioned, would come in handy for when my son likes to paint and things.

Thanks for the discussion and the great ideas. I don't like throwing things like that away so it can sit for years in a landfill. We've used it to cover the firewood, but spiders tend to love it more than the wood does. I like the idea of putting it in the back of the car for groceries. It's also useful when you pick the kids up from soccer or football. They're muddy and dirty. An old plastic shower curtain is perfect for placing muddy cleats and dirty uniforms.

Well, I don't have to use a shower curtain anymore except in our guest bath and we don't have any visitors very often so it stays clean. However when I had one at my old house I would use them to cover things up with such as our mowers, tillers, and other outside tools. They work perfectly. I like the idea of throwing your leaves on them and the toddler play area idea. Thanks again for sharing. Have a great day.

Thanks for the ideas... I usually donate my old curtains to the local clothing depot. You can put anything you want there. I am a minimalist and hate storing anything. But I just thought of an idea I can use it over the kids playhouse outside. It is made out of scrap wood and isn't waterproof but that would help keep some rain of it. Thanks for making me think... Great Post! Vicki
