I had started a discussion just recently about pit bull dogs and then heard this on the news today. On July 17th, a pit bull dog, Maximus that had been tied and chain up had been found that had been set on fire...Maximus was taken to a vet's where efforts were made to save the dog, but it died...a reward was set to find the culprit who did this...and then a week later the reward was raised to $20,000--nothing happened until today when it was discovered that it was the dog's owner himself that set the dog on fire...if convicted he could serve two years in jail...ONLY two??? Here's the story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19809086/ http://groups.google.com/group/AR-News/browse_thread/thread/fcc6fe9f04fe8042 I just don't understand...how can people be so sick to do this to an innocent animal??

I really do not know how anyone can do that to a Dog or to any Animal for that matter, specially if they own the Dog to and then to only get 2 years They should get the same as Murderers do as this is Murder

What the h^ll is wrong with some people?!? It isn't surprising though that IF he is convicted he would get no more than 2 years. Too bad animal life isn't considered as high as a human's or this guy would be going down a lot worse for it.

I agree....I think anyone who does something like this to an animal should have just as stiff jail sentences as a murderer

I just really don't know what to say to that. It sickens me to the core what that person did to this dog. It makes me madder than anything on this entire planet ever could. And what I would like to do to the person who committed such an inhuman act I can't go into detail here. I am not one that wishes harm on people, but when it comes to hurting animals or people that I am close to, I can go a little crazy. They should lock the person up and throw away the key, so he can't do this to another animal or possibly next time it could be a human. I don't remember where I heard it, but I heard that people that commit these sort of acts towards animals, can sometimes turn it against another human.

I can agree to that. Give him the same treatment he did to Maximus, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like it all to well. I think more thorough screening of potential owners should be done, before anyone sales or gives away a pet to another person. Back when I was taking in stray cats, before the vet bills became to much for me to handle on my own, after I had made sure they were socialized, were healthy enough, and generally all around adult and kid friendly, I would always check out the person's pet background. Not only would I ask them how they treated their pets, but I would ask friends, and ask their neighbors if they noticed anything unusual the potential owner may have ever done to their pet. I wouldn't give over a cat unless I was nearly 100% sure that the cat was going to get a loving environment and would get the care that it needed. I also ask them if it would be alright to stop by every now and than to see the cat, cause it never fails that I always get attached, even though I told myself not to. These once stray cats that I had found a home for, have been some of the healthiest and most people friendly cats I have ever seen. I don't know if that is because the owner knows I'll be over to see the cat, or I have picked out some really good owners, but not a one has been abused or neglected since giving them over to another's care. I think if more people were willing to go that extra mile and see to it that the dog, cat, bird, any animal; was getting the proper care and was part of a loving family, that we would not be hearing such awful stories such as Maximus'.

It's wonderful that you did a careful screening of people--since I know a lot of pet rescuers I know of the horror stories that can happen with pets...It is the usual custom for potential those who wish to adopt a pet to pay some kind of fee with the idea that if a person is willing to spend money on an animal that it means they are trust worthy ...unfortunately that doesn't always guarantee that the pet will be safe...and was also told that, many people are willing to shell out some money for a pet, only to turn around and sell the animal to a lab at a sizeable profit...so too bad, places like the SPCA can't do a real, true screening and follow up as well....

Don't worry jeweledbluerose..I go a bit nuts myself when I hear of such things...animals are defenseless creatures and no doubt the poor dog trusted his "master" as any pet does with unconditional love...Should set this guy on fire and see how he likes it

How could anyone do something so evil and cruel like that? That is just beyond me. That poor baby! Those pictures made me cry. And the fact that he was wagging his tail and trying to lick the ASPCA officers' hands when they would visit him....it's just too sad to think about. I hope that guy gets what is coming to him. I'd like to take a shot at him for a few minutes with a baseball bat...there wouldn't be enough of him left to worry about setting aside a bunk in the jail cell for him, that's for sure!

There's so much cruelty with animals....I had heard a story of some crazed nutcase that took a baseball bat and beat his girlfriend's miniature poodle...why? Because he was jealous of the attention she had given the dog--sick

It's a sick world out there sometimes. pyewacket. I think that these types of incidents are increasing. I have heard of some recently in my area. I think the two-year sentence that they gave this guy is a miscarriage of justice. If they made the penalties stiffer maybe these crimes would decrease.

They should make stiffer penalties for this kind of thing...If it was done to a person the culprit would get life in prison

This really is very disturbing. We are seeing more and more of this. It used to be kids doing it but now adults! I wihs I could help you with how people can be so cruel, but I don't quite understand it myself. THe punishment should be greater...maybe it will slow the crime down and maybe even stop it!

That is a shame!! Was it the owner who was giving the reward? I guess that was just to take the heat off him. I too think he should get more than two years!!

Why would the dogs owner do this to the poor Dog- why would you have pets to torture and kill them- Shame on him- He will do his time- and then should not be allowed to have any more pets when he gets out- It better be prison and not just probation-

i saw one even worse this week.kittens that had been trapped by animal control set by two 15 yr old girls who found the cage.they were helpless. they were saved by an 11 yr old boy. it's a good thing i'm not a judge,i tell ya. they'd be getting a dose of "let's see how you like it" :(

I am sorry I could not read the story just hearing about it made my stomache turn. What do you think of the football player the last name of Vick who is involved in the dog fighting ring? I think they need to suspend him until he if found innocent or guilty, the team will not because he is such a great player. SO what he is involved in one of the biggest dog fighting rings in the USA. Why should he get special treatment because he is a great foot ball player, he still is accused of breaking the law. It is looking more and more like he is involved up to his eyeballs.

I don't blame you for not wanting to read the story...as for the football player...nothing will probably happen with him...he's a "star" he's "famous" and will probably go scott free

Saw the name Pyewacket. Thought great, time to stir upsome trouble. Damn, we agree again. I sat here trying to think of an appropriate punishment for this idiot. For the life of me I can't think of one, short of setting him on fire. Up my parts we had some nut neuter a kitten using a pair of kitchen scissors. I look down at my goofy little dog (Tess), sitting on my feet, and I can imagine what I would do to someone did anything to her.I assure you they would prefer the 2 years in prison. The really sad part is he likely won't even get any prison time, let alone 2 years.

Well I'll sure try but being an oldie, some of that technology is a bit beyond me still. I'll get a friend to help. Tess is currently camped out beside me, all fours up in the air. She is part blue tick heeler and part god knows what. I am the sort that spoils pets (our previous dog was with us 19 years) so she pretty much gets her own way. But this is one travelled dog, her story is rather interesting. My best friend moved from Las Vegas to Nova Scotia 2 year ago. The day before they left someone dumped a puppy on their doorstep. Being animal lovers (they have 4 dogs and 8 cats), they couldn't leave her behind and so she began a trip across a continent. They arrived in NS and we arranged to meet them at their place. We got there and no one was home, they had dashed to the store. We went into the back mud room and here was Tess (named after Miss Tessmacher from the Superman movies). They had to keep her apart from the others becuase she was quite a bit smaller and younger than the other dogs. Well my heart just snapped. I wrote them a note that we had taken Tess for a ride and that I was going to keep her (I was more serious than my wife knew). Turns out this was their plan all along. They knew we had lost Jaws a year ago and that if goofy old Miles took one look at Tess he would fall in love. They were right. Luckily I had enough times to get over Jaws a bit (her loss hit me very hard) and we have been a family of 3 ever since.

well, unfortunately this world is becoming crazier and crazier and there is no end of how cruel people can be nowadays... i think the main reason is because the morale of the people have decreased a lot nowadays compare to in the past... part of the reason is the advance in technology... the more advanced the technology is, the more people's morale go down... in the past, people used to live in a simple way... their way of thinking is also very simple... this is not the case nowadays...

Yes, the morales of people in today's society have gone down so drastically--I don't think years ago a person would have even thought of doing something so cruel

This is the reason way I am against pit bulls and people having pit bulls. People use pit bulls for bad things. Pit bulls are raised and breed for fighting. Many states have outlawed pit bulls because people do not know how to take care of them or raise them. I know that many of you on here may love your pit bulls and you may think that they are great dogs, but I am sorry to say this, they are not good dogs. These dogs have a very shady and dark history, and it is the people who have created these dogs that have made their history so shady and dark. I have heard so many horror stories about pit bulls that when someone tells me that they have a pit bull, I tell them that I am no longer associated with them.

Well maybe if you saw my discussion about pitbulls you might see things differently--it's not the breed of dog, but how they are treated or raised...If raised the wrong way, even a poodle could be just as vicious....

This one broke my heart just like the Vick's case. I don't understand how someone can do that to an animal either. I am sorta at ease with the dog passing away because I know it will never suffer again or have to fear humans. God needed Maximus and he is up in Rainbow Bridge having a field day with all my animals. It was a sad case. I hope he is hung by his NUTS for this!

It's amazing how much people can do to defenseless animals with such little consequences to face. Maybe if the penalty for animal abuse is made to be harsher it would thwart some of these awful things from happening.

I hate people like this! The culprit should be set on fire too!! I love dogs so much. That's why I really abhor people who hurt them. Here in our country, they do the same thing. Then after, they will eat it! That is just so ireful! I really wish that here in our country, they would also press charges to these kind of crooks.. I really hope.. This is such a sad story. I went to msn to check out the whole story and they have pictures of maximus but I just decided not to look at those. It would just make me feel.. I don't know.. tHIS is just so, so sad.
