Why do people feel they have to keep rocking a sleeping baby?

There is a young lady standing in front of me rocking a baby. The baby is fast asleep, yet she continues to rock it up and down. I could understand if the baby was fussing, but this one is asleep. The same thing happened one day last week. A gentleman came in with a baby and he kept rocking it even though they werent' fussing. So why do you think people do that? (I wonder if I do it? Its been a while since I held a very small baby)

I would do the same if I were in the same situation. It has become a lifestyle for people specially with people carrying babies. We have been used to the idea that rocking the babies could give them a good sleep. I ahve no confidence holding months old baby. Im afraid to, its as if im going to crush them. They are so innocent and so helpless and I dont want to hurt them in any way.

It does seem that its automatic. They don't rock them in their beds though?

I know when I used to rock mine. After they fell asleep, I would keep rocking until you can raise there arm and it would fall down all limp because that was the only way I could tell if they were sleeping. Plus when your rocking for so long, it's habit to keep doing it way after the baby is sleeping for fear of waking the baby.

I guess thats the case...you forget that you're doing it. It almost like breathing, you do it without any conscious effort.

Rocking is a hard habit to break. With my youngest, I had rocked her since the first night bringing her home from the hospital until now that she started kindergarten, lol. I am slowly breaking her of it, eventhough I know if I rock her, I know I will get her to sleep a lot faster. Plus honestly I enjoy it at times, seeing her sleeping in my arms. I guess I'm not ready to give up those few moments where she will sit still with me.

Babies are so cute and cuddly that sometimes rocking them is comforting for the parent or whomever is doing the rocking. Also, people keep rocking the baby because they think that if they stop the baby will wake up. Babies are smart and they know what to do to be cuddled. I do the same with my cats. I guess its a habit. http://www.simpleknowledge.blogspot.com

:-) Babies do learn quickly about what buttons to push. :-)

when you are a parent of a small baby there is nothing you value more that a bit of rest. my son was happy when he was rocked and so was I. The motion makes the baby sleep and gives it comfort of knowing you are there.

Well, I am not sure why either, but people are just doing it. Maybe children just like the feeling of being in a swing, or say, like flying in the sky! wbr,Andy
