Whenever I eat food, I get really tired.

Lately I've noticed that whenever I eat food, I get really tired. Today when I got up around six AM, I had lots of energy to spare and got lots of things done. But when I got a bowl of cereal around eight or nine this morning, my energy vanished. Now, it's four hours later and I still feel sluggish. My breakfast consisted of a small bowl of cereal with milk. It's not as if I ate a big plate of sausage and eggs or anything fattening. So, I can't understand why I would feel so depleted. Yesterday I didn't eat much at all and I felt fine all day long. This has been going on for awhile, so I'm not sure if it's a food allergy or just the foods I'm eating. Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone else feel tired after they eat? How soon should the tiredness go away?

As someone else already mentioned, you should have your blood sugar level checked out. If your blood sugar goes too high it definitely makes you feel sleepy. It could also just be what you are eating. Some people get tired when they eat a lot of fiber. I don't know what kind of cereal you were eating, but a lot of cereal has plenty of fiber in it, so that could be it. Maybe you should try a short nap, or even just quiet relaxation after you eat everyday. If I don't get up and get stuff done right away after I eat certain foods, I sometimes feel tired, and take a short nap. It really helps.

Those are really good ideas. Thanks! I didn't know that about fiber. And, yes I did have blood sugar issues when I was pregnant and the doctor mentioned that it might come back later, so I may need to start monitoring what I am eating.

Hello beautyqueen, Whenever I eat food, I will feel sleepy. That's for sure especially after lunch hour *laughs* But I don't feel tired like you mentioned here. I used to have heavy meals during lunch and really..it will make me sleepy throughout the day!

This happens to me also- I'm pretty sure it is the fullness feeling- just makes me feel tired also- But they say the food we eat is what gives us energy- so we have to eat. Maybe you need to try something else to eat. I know when I eat certain things- I feel like I could doze off.

I'm so glad you shared this to us, and I hope lots of people can read your discussion and my response to it. When we eat sugary foods, our blood sugar rose up dramatically in a short span of time. In a matter of minutes after eating. Therefore, our body produces enzymes that regulates our blood sugar and bring them back to normal level. This enzyme action lowers our blood sugar to some level lower than the normal. That's why we feel tired because our blood sugar is low. After few minutes, enzymes will correct the problem and maintain the normal blood level again. But this should not go on uncorrected; eating sugary foods. Because eventually our enzymes and hormones will be screwed and we'll end up having diabetes; God forbid. I hope you learn something. Cheers!

Hi beautyqueen, As your name suggests you should be very conscious about your looks and food habits. I was just pulling you!!! That might be because of the sugar levels in your blood. Just get it checked and try to eat a lot of vegetables which are cooked and don't take any hard food. The vegetables cooked and raw will just give you all the required nutrients for your body and gives you a feeling of the filling also. This might definitely help you, try just for a few days and check out.

Go to the doctor. You could be diabetic or have another problem that makes you react badly to food. Get checked out most of the tests are easy and if nothing comes back abnormal then you can be tested for food alergies. I have a lot of those and most I have found the hard way it starts out as something simple like being tired or an upset stomach then as I keep eating the food it gets more severe like cramping and skin reactions. Better safe than sorry. If it concerns you it should concern your doctor.

Go for the eggs, and some lean meat, a piece of toast and a small serving of fruit. You will have more energy than just the small bowl of cereal. Eating carbs without balancing them with protein will tend to make some people very tired. A couple of weeks ago I read in a magazine to eat your supper for breakfast, and for me, that works too. By that diet suggestion, you would eat your small bowl of cereal and milk for your evening meal. I have felt good the days I have done this. You probably need to experiment around, but definitely eat breakfast.

Oh yes and you are not alone. That's why I keep delaying my meals when I feel that I have the energy to do something. Otherwise after I eat, I would only feel tired and lazy and don't want to do anything at all. It's like the energy is lost all of a sudden. Now I try not eating too full and relax for 30 minutes after I eat, then I would brain wash myself to get back to the stuff I need to do again.

I think that it is very normal to feel tired after eating food. I have the same feeling, especially after lunch. I always feel so sleepy after lunch and my wife knows me well and ask me to go and take a nap. If you want to get rid of the tiredness, I think, to make some tea to drink might be of some help to you. During the whole summer vacation, I didn't sleep much after lunch because I drank tea from morning till afternoon. Tea is very helpful to me to keep me wide awake and less tired.

yeah i havethe similar feeling like you.and it is pretty normal to be tired after eating, becuase we give something to over body to work on.But there are meal after those you shouldn't be tired.Like fruits and vegetable. Also the research are saying our kids should eat nothing heavy before the lunch , beucase thier brain wouldn't work as good.Although cereals are not that heavy I am really supriced it makes you feel tired.

Well, i also experienced that. It's just that sometimes, you need to burp, and also, sometimes, it is what we called dyspepsia. When you feel that again, just drink a cola. Exercise is essential also for you to be active all day.

Might be worth keeping a food diary, see if any one ingredient has this effect. With me , I get this with wheat, I'm not exactly allergic to it, just it makes me lathargic and headachy, so I tryto avoid it in most cases.
