Someone Donated A Store To You--What Kind Of Business Would You Start?

Aha, that's the scenario. I'm happily stuck with an empty shop. A wonderful friend has given it to my family. It also helps him out (tax break, and kind of luring other businesses into the center) but we are still at a loss of what to do with it. It is also very far out into the desert which would mean a commute of 2 hours. Though we could set up an apartment in the back (depending on the building code). Do you have any ideas? What business should we start or what else could we do with it?

I would start a big horse store. Not a store that sold horse supplies but a real horse store. It's hard to buy a horse because you have to travel to try several horses but if there were one place where you could go and try out different horses it would be great. The people who were selling the horses would have to pay you to leave the horse there and then you would get paid when it sold. Kind of like ebay charging to list and item and then charging a final value fee.

Mmmm, thus the name Quiethorse. :) That would take a very large shop though.

If it were me, I'd get all the details regarding the building code(s)for starters and work on building an apartment behind the store. It could be a place where you can stay Monday through Friday and then return to your primary home on weekends. That would cut the commute time, not to mention the cost of gasoline. I'd have to open a consignment shop and load it with crafts, jewelry, pretty much all handmade items. How far is the closest town from the empty shop? Doubt that I would drive a very long distance to look at crafts, which is why I am asking. I would also be tempted to stock a store with all handmade items from Hawaii. Guess you would have to work out the details with an Hawaiian vendor who would sell directly to you. And my final idea would be to remodel the shop, turn it into a nice apartment and rent it. Would be some sort of extra income versus having the shop sit there idle. Have a good day, carolbee

Those building codes can be very tricky and usually the city won't budge for you. We would love to build an apartment in the back. But checking out the codes would be priority. And I really like the idea of renting it out. But then I would feel like I'm ripping my friend off. After all, he's giving us a business. Though he's sweet enough to let us do whatever with it. Thanks, Carolbee. I appreciate your input.

I don't know the square footage but it's big enough for a small restaurant, which I don't want to do. There's good traffic. All we have to think now is what would this desert area really be interested in. It's a question we hope to answer soon. Thanks, my friend, for your input.

If it is way out in the desert I would choose something that there is not a lot of, but a need for. This is the way your business will thrive. I do not no much about business or running one, but I do know about supply and demand. Do some checking with the people in the area and see what they might like it to be. I am sure that there is something that they would love to see in their neighborhood. If there are no people in the area, but people go through often, make it a gas station and convience store.

My dad keeps saying we need to sell bottled water. LOL. Water is in high demand over there. We'll have those machines where people can bring and fill up their own bottles too. Thanks, Rozie.

That is exactly what I was thinking. If people are out in the desert, they are going to want cold water and maybe a snack. And you would never want to run out of gas out there. Listen to your dad.

I think it would depend on what else is in the area. I wouldn't want a store that would have a lot of competition, but at the same time it needs to be something people need or really want. It would also depend on whether you wanted to sell something or provide a service. You mentioned you didn't want to do a restaurant. I would stick with something that I really like so it doesn't feel so much like work.

That's what we are stuck on, I believe. We need to find something that we would enjoy doing. I personally would like a book shop with a small bakery or coffee house in it. Somewhat like Barnes and Nobles has done with Starbucks. I would also have a few computers around that people will be able to use. But my brother and parents aren't too hip on this idea. Thanks for your advice. It's much appreciated.

oh! that is nice, but considering the details that you have given, it is quite a difficult location. if i had a shop, i would want it to be an arts and crafts store with a coffee shop. but i dunno, with that location, i don't think it will be feasible. best of everything! :-)

If someone has donated you a store in such a strange location, I think first of all you need to know how is the place in terms of traffic, I mean if people do cross that road frequently you can try and open some hip happening food joint along with some music store so that people passing through may take a halt and eat and listen to music. Otherwise, you will have to attract crowd by opening a hip-hop discotheque. Well, in second case, you will have to do a lot of investment on marketting so that people may know that in silent and away from buzz of the city there is a place where they can party.

Well...if it is out in the desert or a place that doesn't have much business going on, something that would be of a convenience to those living in the area, like maybe a video store, used book store, gift shop, coffee/food type shop. What would you like to see there if you were a citizen in that area. That is what I would think on, if you lived there, what type of place would you like to see come into town and what types of things would you like to purchase. This is awesome that someone would do this for you! I wish you the very best of luck! Keep us posted :)

Wow I wish that happened to me. An actual store, donated to me. I would renovate it, make it a pub or something. You don't like restaurant but what about pub or bar or something like truck stop? I saw these in the movies, a place in the desert where truck drivers etc stop for gas or drink and snack. I guess it depends on the traffic. Anyway good luck I hope you find a good idea.

Mmm, sounds a little provocative. Showers in the shop. Um, maybe not. Selling soap would go right along with selling other crafts. I always loved those country shops with home made everythings. They always smelled so good. Wood slatted floors with brick walls. Ah, it's a thought. Thanks Amberina.
