Meeting someone in costume.

I took my son to story hour for the first time yesterday. We picked a good day. The fire chief was the one reading the stories and he read about my son's favorite character, Clifford! He also brought some of the other firemen, including one dressed up as their mascot, a dalmation. The big dalmation scared some of the other kids, but surprisingly, not my 20 month old. I thought he might be scared at first, because his eyes got so big when he looked at him, and then he turned to look at me. But he really surprised me by looking back at the man in the dalmation costume and whispering "Twigsie's daddy!" and smiling really big. It was so cute. Trixie is the name of one of our dogs. He must have thought since it was a big dog, it had to be the father of his own dog. To include a question to make this a better discussion...do your kids get scared when they see people in costume? There were two little girls that had to leave because they were so scared of him. Or would your kids be more likely to walk up and try to sit on their laps, like my son? Funny thing is, he wouldn't have anything to do with any of the other strangers, even the kids.

I think that would be fun! I had forgotten about his meeting with the Dalmatian until I came back on mylot. I'm glad I didn't delete all my discussions like some people did. It's a really fun memory.

When my boys were small, they were not afraid of anyone in costume. In fact, they had no trouble with Santa and no trouble when they went out for Halloween. They watched a lot of cartoons on TV and thought they were these characters come to life. They were the kind who would walk up and say hi to them.

So far my kids haven't really been afraid of people in costumes. I think one year my daughter might have been afraid of the easter bunny. Surprisingly they are usually one of the kids that goes right up to someone in costume and hugs them. Sometimes they'll hang back but theyve never been so scared that we had to leave.
