A few months ago, we had to have our home repaired. Well there was this guy named Dwayne that started to handle the process. I never trusted him. I got a bad feeling about him off the bat. When things were not going right with the repairs, my husband and I had him kicked off. For example, our front door was wide open one evening after the workers had left and this guy was supposed to be overseeing the repairs. My hunch about him was confirmed. Check this story out: http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/11/07/1107peeping.html Do companies not do background checks anymore?

some companies do not require it. It's not a federal or state law do they don't have to. although if i owned that kind of business i would ensure that all my employees are trustworthy and would not put my business in jeapordy. you bring up a good point and if i have to hire anyone for repairs on our house i will make sure the company does a backround check on their employees. thanks.

That was my main concern there. Since these are people's homes and one of the biggest investment people will ever make, it should be taken into account. I understand sometimes these things will not show up, but this is important.

sadly this seems to happen quite abit. there is a tv show here in canada about a fellow who does nothing but repairs to houses that have been 'fixed' by people who do work that is way below standard or even code. it is horrible the way these people operate!

dear nangel, it's terrible isn't it, you have to be so cautious all the time now in this world...my dentist several years ago and his wife runs a hospice in a nearby hospital, contracted a carpet cleaning company to clean their expensive and gorgeous home...they gave the manager the key to house as it would take several days. one day after they were done, my dentist went to get his cellphone to use and it was gone! he and his wife, began looking around the huge house only to discover so many things stolen...like her antique and sentimental ancestorial jewelry, electronics etc. carpet companies, here in new york don't screen these miminum wage employees, so they stole has much as they could...stanzi
