Do you drive with your headlights on during the day?

I personally try to make it a habit to turn the headlights on in my car when I drive when it is daytime (and of course at night), rain or shine. Even though it may not really be needed I want that extra protection of being seen by other drivers as well as pedestrians. It's rare, but sometimes I forget to turn the headlights on during the daytime. There is also a street that I drive on that has signs posted to turn on headlights during the day. I always make sure my headlights are on whenever I'm on this road. And no, it's not on a mountain road, but rather a flat land two lane country road. So do you drive with your headlights on during the day?

I never drive with my headlights on for the simple reason that I would forget they are on. Hence, I would park & leave them on, & my battery would go flat.

My 2005 Buick LeSabre has an auto on and off feature. As I turn the car on the lights turn on. Then when I turmn it off the lights go off. No need for a memory. HAHAHAHA!! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I have the daytime running lights that come on when you start the car. I don't bother with putting on the regular lights until it is dark. Funny thing is that I rarely drive at night. (poor night vision) and once I had to drive at night and didn't know how to turn the lights on.

I Guess you can say that I do, although it's not by choice. I would do that in my old car, but in the car that I drive now, a 2007 Honda Civic, there are daytime running lights that are on no matter what. I think it is a good precaution; some people think that it's too much, but I guess it's erring on the side of caution. There are some routes that I've seen where it is required to do it, but there are also times when I feel safer with the lights on during the day, when the visiblity is lower.

Wow, I wish my car had that feature! I have to turn on my lights manually, but I'm used to doing that. Maybe one day I'll have a car that does that! :)

It's the way cars are made in Canada. All cars here have daytime running lights.

OK, now I understand.. That's a pretty neat idea indeed.. But here in my country, we don't have roads very close to the pedestrians, maybe that's why that idea never stuck me... Neways, thanks for explaining.. Really appreciated... And as far as reading ur discussion is concerned, here in mylot, I only respond by looking at the subject of the discussion, not the entire matter.. That's the way I work here..

Ah, now I understand why you replied to my discussion the way you did! But don't you see that if you respond by just reading the subject and not the entire post you could be missing out on things that aren't included in the subject area. It may take longer by reading the entire discussion, but at least there is less chance of any miscommunication. :)

I'm quoting myself here and if you would have read my discussion you would have seen that I put this: "I want that extra protection of being seen by other drivers as well as pedestrians." The above statement is why I drive with my headlights on during the day. Please also look at some of the other responses and you'll see that the newer cars headlights come on as soon as the engine starts up. Since cars come standard like this now I guess I'm not the only one who thinks this is a good idea. :)

Kind of. I have driving lights on my car so anytime I put the car in drive, the lights are on. They're not as bring as headlights.

Good point! Driving safely is most important. But unfortunately there are too many drivers that don't drive safely. :(

No, I don not drive with the head lights on during the day. I just use it to signal during the day. I dont find it useful in the morning but if you do, then theres nothing wrong with that. The lights that I dont forget to use morning or evening is the signal light. I find some who does not use that.

Hmm... if the day is sunny and bright, even if you were to on the headlights, it still not visible. Cos the ambient light is brigther than your headlights, it is not possible to even notice that your headlights are on. Keeping the headlights on under such conditions will only be wasting the bulb's life. But if the weather turns dark, like before a heavy rain, then turning on the headlights would be more useful. Unless the law states that, it is really not much useful to keep the headlights on on a bright sunny day. The same could be said for motorcyclist too. ;)

If you buy a car in Canada you won't be able to turn the headlights off. Theres been a law in Canada since 1987 that all new cars will have running lights (headlights in most cases)on at all times. This same law applies to motorcycles too. I think its a good idea. Very often, especially on a dark day or in fog the first thing you see are the lights.

Wow, I didn't know about this law in Canada. Very interesting! I did notice motorcycles are the same way here in the US. Though I never thought about the newer vehicles having this feature until I posted this discussion.

That's a good policy to have. Personally I use my headlights when needed, in tunnels, at night, in fog, during rain etc.etc. I base whether or not I use them during the day when not needed on other people. If some car looks dumb not having their lights on then I definitely put mine on. One of my old cars had a broken ding, you know.. the ding that happens when you open the door and leave your keys in the ignition or lights on or something. So I tended not to use my lights unless it was warranted cause otherwise I'd forget my lights were on and kill my battery!

I would only do it if the car had an automatic shut off. I have too many times left early in the morning when I needed headlights, and by the time I got to my destination, it was sunny out and I would forget to turn them off. And of course you know what happens then...

I live in southern california - I will do anything I can to protect myself from the crazies out here on the streets - yes, I have my lights set to turn on when the engine is on and not go off until the engine stops. It is a good way to keep you out of someone's blind spot and to keep you "noticed" by drivers so they dont' run into you or "not see you". Plus, I later found out I get a discount with my insurance because I have that feature on my car!

Alot of the newer cars do that automatically. Ours are on when we start the car. We don't even have to think about it. I think it's safer to drive with the lights on.

I wish my car's lights turned on automatically! Then I wouldn't have to double check to make sure I turned them on each time I start my car.

I live in Italy. Here on motorways and main roads outside town centres you must have your headlights on by law. If you have them off you risk being fined. Also if it rains you must have then on anywhere and everywhere. This became law three years ago and I think it is a very sensible one. Some of the people who replied before me have lights that come on automatically - are these cars made in Europe by any chance and therefore abiding to this law that we have here?

It may have become law for drivers to turn on their headlights when it rains, though it doesn't look like it's enforced much...at least here in California. I've seen too many drivers break this law and keep their headlights off. I don't know if they just forgot to turn them on or if they think they can be seen by other motorists so that their headlights aren't needed or maybe they just don't give a rats @$$ and keep them off. Who knows?

I never turn my headlights on during the day unless it's raining. I just never really think about turning them on unless it's dark outside or if it's raining.

If it is foggy, or even getting cloudy where it may cause shadows, I'll turn on my lights during the day, but not normally. A lot of cars these days have lights that automatically turn on when the car starts. That's cool, but mine are not like that. And I'm OK with that. If I have my lights on during the day, sometimes I don't remember to turn them off! : )

no, never have done that, except in very rare cases of heavy rains where visibility is close to zero. However when visibility is good, I guess there is really no need for headlights during the day....

Well in my country when you are not driving in a town you got to have your headlights on...or you going to risk having a ticket....

I'm not sure why really, but I never put my headlights on during the day, unless it's a really bad storm or been snowing and such. I think I am always afraid that i'll turn them on and since it is light outside I'll forget about them and go about my business. Turning them on at night is different because you can easily see that they are still on when you leave the car, and it's almost impossible to forget about them. I guess it'd be better for me to invest in a car where they come on automatically when you start the car.
