No matter what programme you watch, from soaps to films, from horror to talk shows, the one thing that dominates them is AFFAIRS! If no one had affairs, do you think that television would be absolutely boring? Do you think that soaps could run without people have affairs? Is this what television has been reduced to? It does rather advocate people having affairs doesn't it! No wonder the divorce rate is so high! When affairs are glamorized in this fashion Do you enjoy watching a good affair, glad that's it's not your own partner/boyfriend/girlfriend having one? Could you imagine switching on the television without an affair in the storyline on the programme? So what's your thinking about affairs are they really making television what it is today?

Is just another sign of the times..... it's just how it is..... Fidelity doesn't mean much to a lot of people...... in a situation that I am in..... a lot of people think I'm overreacting because I've not taken my husband back.... but I just can't.. xoxoxoxo

Well I certainly don't think that, you are better off with that and I use the word 'man' loosely! I certainly wouldn't have him back, as for overreacting? Hmmmmmph you know how I feel on that subject sweetie, you have every right and more xxxx

I think most of the affairs they show only let you see how much you could lose rather than making it seem like a good idea! I know children are influenced by tv but surely as adults we have already formed our morals and our own ideas and shouldn't be influenced by what fictional characters on tv or real life celebrities do? Just my opinion sweety - I think if I was not in love with my other half anymore I would rather seperate than cheat and if I was still in love then I definitely wouldn't cheat on them then! xxx

But some people take soaps soooo seriously and think it's part of everyday life, and do you remember the Free Deirdre Raschid from Coronation Street? People actually went out and signed petitions, it's when things go beyond soapland and encompass reality. Affairs are portrayed as the norm. It's true what they say about the grass being greener!

I do remember it honey and it always amazes me that people seem to think it is real life! I enjoy some soaps but I know they aren't real! xxx

i think mainly the soaps and serials can't be made without affairs. In India there are lots of serials and main part of all of them is afafirs only. sometimes those afafirs are so irritatng that the serials become boring. Also some serials show taht all have extra marital affairs in the soap! its just ridiculous I think. I think people have for got to act and think seriously.

well wolfie do you know any people that have had affairs? I certainly do.. in fact numerous people that I know have had them. My point is...one really good friend of mine had one and I must say it was intriguing, every day at lunch we found a quite place off the beat and path and wanted to know what was going on with her and him. It was reality TV at the workplace, and we were a captive audience...if that's what happens in real life than why wouldn't it work on TV?

You're so right. I suppose the secrecy, the intrigue... I don't understand myself why people like to watch it but the fact is that rating say they do. Maybe they think that if they see it on tv, it won't happen to them :) I'm not sure if those shows are mimicking real life or if real life is mimicking the shows. Probably half/half. But I do know of many people that rationalize their own affairs by saying that everyone else does it, even on tv. Personally I'm sure that writers are creative enough to find other plots and other situations to catch the publics attention, but I guess affairs make more money.

Without affairs television would be much BETTER! I disagree with you on one point. I don't think that TV is encouraging people to have affairs and get divorced. I think TV mimics what is happening in our society rather than the other way around. It sure does give our kids the wrong idea, though! I would love to go back to "old fashioned" TV where it didn't show such loose morals. I try not to watch shows that are advocating people having affairs, but you are right... that's not too easy to be found!

If there were no affairs, t.v. would be more violent. Instead of love storylines, there would be more adventure stories." What has t.v. been reduced to?"Soaps have been on the air since the 50's. This is nothing new.The divorce rate is high because women have more choices. Instead of being stuck in a marriage because there wasn't anywhere for them to go so they stayed. The best soap storylines I saw on the soaps involved a love triangle. It was great. I don't see soaps anymore though. If there weren't love stories with some conflict, there would be far less t.v.

I guess if every relationship on TV went perfectly smoothly there wouldn't be much interesting to watch, would there? But, it's really nothing new and I don't think it's even that much more prevalent in the movies and on TV than it was years ago. Think about it - how many of the old classic movies were centered around someone cheating on their spouse or S/O? How about the old detective and law shows, like Perry Mason? What about the daytime soaps, which I remember seeing my grandmother watching back in the late fifties, early sixties? I really don't think this adds to the divorce rate or influences young people negatively as much as some may think because there's still often a "moral" to the story, a lesson to be learned that there are usually consequences for the cheaters and the victims usually come out smelling like a rose. Great topic! Annie

I'm not sure whether it's life imitating art, wolfie, or art imitating life, but there certainly are an abundance of story lines featuring affairs. Kind of makes you wonder if a lot of this behavior is spurred on because it is a trend. Actually, I don't think that more people are having affairs any more than they used to-they are just being publicized more. I do think also that celebrities have largely contributed to the rise in people having affairs, since they figure if the celebs can do it and get away with it, why not them.
