ABORTION: the rights of a WOMAN vs the rights of an unborn FETUS? 20 years later

Doctor Henry Morgentaler; a Montrealer, a survivor of the Nazi holocaust, had challenged the Supreme-Court of Canada, TWICE. He broke the law. He opened the Pandora-Box by spilling the beans out. He went against everything The Quebec Catholic-church stood by. Quebec than was run by the Catholic-Church. In 1968, he did the unthinkable: performing an ABORTION, under Canadian laws punishable; from 2 years to LIFE in PRISON. He served 10 months in jail. Was prosecuted, fire-bombed, lost his practice, the well being of his family was a shambel. He felt the PAIN of all these women, after witnessing the cruelty, inhumanity, suffering and injustice at the 'CAMPS' by the Germans. Today it's 20 years since The entire Country had CRUMBELED and gave-in. Dr H Morgentaler WON. ABORTION is legal. How do you feal about it? About the unborn fetus? Was/is the RIGHT to live, taken from the UNborn? Do you know someone who aborted her child? What do you think the 'mother' must be feeling/going thru? Do you think it's just a 'cope-out' for more convenient-reasons? What, if any, the 'father' must be feeling? Was the RIGHT of a would-be-father taken away from the husban? Does the husban has any say in it, at all? Do you know of any husban a would to be father that was 'there' and OBJECTED? If you are a religiouse person, do you see this to be conflicting with your religion? What do you think of Dr H Morgentaler?

Well Lionpuppyheart, you just opened Pandoras Box! This one should get you a lot of responses. I do not believe in abortion, but that will not stop anyone from doing it. Women feel that it is their Right and they won that right here in the states years ago in our Supreme Court. Some states talk about trying to ban it in their state. The women would just cross over to the next state where it was legal It is funny. In the elections, all of our candidates are running on religious issues. They all believe in G'd and say they go to church etc. but only a couple of them think that abortion is killing a baby. It has not been that long ago that the Catholic Church allowed abortions up until the quickening of the child. This is true you can read it in church history. It was sometime in the 1800s. Up until then if you had not felt the baby move then it was ok to end the pregnancy. For some reason things changed and when the Catholics changed everyone else eventually did too. So went the world back then. Shalom~Adoniah

Shalom Adoniah, When you say: you don't believe in abortions is it 'cause of OUR owen religion; as a JEW? Or as a woman/female/mother? Do you personally feel that abortions kill babies? Do you feel that the UNborn FETUS is a LIVING from 'time-line'=zero? IT we were ALL N-O-T religiouse belivers, would it change you/us? Do you think you would have been able to see things differently in another perspective?

I am a woman who has had two lovely children now lovely grown ladies. I could never have aborted them even if I had never know Judaism or if I had never known G'd. I knew I was carrying little humans from the moment of conception. They were planned and they were wanted. So were the 3 that I lost. Shalom

Shlom Adoniah, So sorry :-( of you loosing the three. I hope/wish there was something I could say to ease the pain & memories. I don't know what to say :-( It's my turn to hold a thought for you in my heart. I'll send you a beam of light full of 'Tanchumim'. It's not an easy task for a mother to be to decide to give-up her unborn child (baby/fetus). However in some cases, under certain circumstances, such as: being underage, health-risks, under the influance of addiction and more, it might not be fare for the new born... In these cases; I would tend to think we are being selfish in our-own believes, not counting the future outcome to the born child... My yougest son's name is Jonathan. Hebrew translation = G-D gave. We had ample reasons, than, to abort him... For starters: His mother's age than was 43 + in poor health, Super allergic, and more... But, we did not. My Late-Dad convinced us both, to keep him. I'm glad. he is 19+ well & healthy. I Love him and thanks to my Late-Dad Jonathan is here with us. :-) "Ani Sholeach Lach Chibuk" Arieh

THe whole pro life - pro choice conversation. Such a conversation starter. Me myself I could never have an abortion but I do believe in a woman's right to choose. I do believe though that the laws should be somewhat stricter. a woman can have an abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. This work out to be 6 months. 6 months and can have an abortion. The baby is more than developed. It has a heartbeat. and its body is developed. The time frame is too long. At this age an abortion baby can actually come out alive. The doctor than lets it die because the babies lungs is not fully developed and would need oxygen from a machine. These doctors than deprieve these babies of this. If a plaaned abortion baby is alive when they do the abortion shouldn;t the baby now have rights as every other citizen does. isn;t this now murder. that would be my only problem I think the time should be cut down.

I'm with you on this one, phillygirl 606. I aggree that it's a very hard topic, extremley emotional. and full of pain. There are no winners here. Both, mother & child got RIGHTS. However, when the mother to be is say 14-16, with a history of addiction, with family back-ground of abuse, lacking finantial resorces & support, lacking a supportive partner... Than, Her RIGHTS to terminate the pregnancy over-rules the UNBORN's rights, in my opinion. The BIG question here is when the UNborn start having rights? Most aggree when VITAL life sign start to exist. It has been accepted to be prior to the 12th week. At 26 weeks (as it is acceped today) it's stretching it too far to the point of having a FULL LIFE existing with FULL RIGHTS. So, on your second half of your comment I'm with you; The max time period of allowing an abortion should NOT excceed 12 weeks. HALF the CURRENT one. Would it be considered to be MURDER? I would have no problem voting for this one. Aborting behond 12 weeks, especially 24-26,is KILLING a LIVING HUMAN BEING. :-( Thanks for your comment Arieh

I personally would never have an abortion...but I don't think it's an issue that is just black and white...yes or no. I think late term abortions should definately be against the law. When they are born sucking their thumbs....crying then it definately is killing an unborn child. I think that every woman has so much available to prevent pregnancy in the first place there should be a need for it....but in some cases I do understand about saving the life of a child. I don't think that mother's that do abort are given total understanding of what they will be going through.....and should have counciling after.

Shalom jillhill, Nothing in life is black & white / yes or no. We do have those "gray-areas". Late-Term abortions, as they stand today, in most places are = 25-26 weeks into the pregnancy = 6 MONTHS!!! Here I have Consciouse-Problems to cope with. We are PLAIN KILLING a LIVING-BABY, that ALSO has got RIGHTS: the RIGHT to LIVE. What about the option of ADOPTION? Thanks for writting and sharing your feelings/thoughts

Hello jillhill, And until than, jillhill, what cmoment, if any, are you ready to give to day here? By the title of the book: "An Ax in the Sandbox" I gather it is the BABY the UNborn FETUS which is being AXED? Do you feel, personally yourself, that we are AXING an UNborn CHILD that has a RIGHT to LIFE, like all of us? Do you feel the UNborn BABY feels the PAIN of getting aborted?
