Is America going to have a shortage of electricity?

Greeners have celebrated the closing of 59 coal plants in 2007. The thing is, the coal plants produce 50% of our electric power. The greens opposed nuclear power plants also, so we haven't built a new one in 30 years. The article says there is no way solar or wind power would produce enough power for us. So what are we to do? http://www.theconservativevoice.com/articles/article.html?id=30725

Home and business owners have the option of installing solar panels for all their eletric needs and to even sell the surplus back to the electric company. We are seriously looking into installing them so we can 'get off the grid'.

We are having the same problem here in New Zealand, we are told we need to keep NZ green etc but at the cost of no coal mines, no electricity. They would just about have to have half of NZ with those silly looking wind mills and I don't think nuclear power is an option at the moment either. I honestly don't know what we are supposed to do without electricity either, just think of all the equipment that would have to be run another way, and are there any other alternatives being created?

They will have to come up with cheap abundant fuel. We have a nuclear plant about 100 miles away. Plus there are some wind towers in the area. But who knows what will happen in the next 50 years.

First, this article states there is NO global warming. The evidence does not support this, are the polar caps melting or just pretending they are! Second, coal plants are NOT healthy for either our environment or ourselves. Third, until we can find a safe way to dispose of the nuclear waste these power plants are too dangerous. Fourth, "greenies" do not want us to move backward, but forward. The reason the "all other sources" are less than 1% of electricity produced is that not enough alternative powers sources are built or used. One of the best sources of renewable and clean energy sources is solar power, siding is now being made as well as solar panels. Why aren't these in production? I've even heard there is a small unit that is in development that each household will have to produce its own electricity. No, what this article wants is the same old money grabbing sources that benefit the oil, coal and nuclear plant companies.

That's not how I interpreted the article. It sounded to me like a warning. They have closed so many coal plants, but we have nothing to take their place. I've been an advocate of solar and wind power for a long time, but it is not readily available and is too expensive for most of us.
