The more expensive... the better.

I hate doing my groceries with my husband. We always argue about the products' price, brand, quantity, quality and everything that has something to do with a product. I am after price and he is after the brand. He has this concept that the pricey the product is... the more effective it is. But I am more concern about savings. I believe that expensive products are expensive because the manufacturer spent a lot on advertising, product promotion, packaging and franchise. Well, maybe it's a male thing. Is it?

I go through something similar with my husband. He prefers high quality, whereas I will go with okay for most products.

What I meant was... my husband is so picky and his idea of the expensive products is unclear.

i usually go for something i've tried and liked. i rarely go for house brand as i've tried one or two and hated the taste. when it comes to food, there is a reason why certain brands are more expensive than others. even the good old bread, different brands just taste differently. when the difference is less than a dollar, i'd go for the one i like. but when the difference is a few dollars, then i'll ask myself if the difference in taste justifies the huge difference in price. one thing that i really will pay for the few dollar difference is rice. house brand rice and 'branded' rice really taste very different so now i only stick to one brand of rice, though it's the most expensive brand.

I agree too, and once i like something i stick to it. I might try some new things sometimes and when i like it i would add that to my list. doing grocery is getting more complicated now specially with the price going up.

yes i totally agree with you. and the numerous brands doesn't help. sometimes when i am looking for something i'd be bewildered by the variety on the shelves. it's really difficult to decide if the slighly pricier one will taste better or it's just brand. or should i go for the smokey flavour instead of original. that's why sometimes i'd spend hours at the store making decisions. and end up with only half of my shopping list in my bag. :(

I'm quite lucky that my husband doesn't matter what brand we buy as long as he likes eating the food. If he finds something he likes, he will keep on buying that brand even if it wasn't on sale. I tend to go for sales and price than the brand names.

You are lucky. Maybe my husband just like to argue and a bit stubborn. Because when i feed him with generic products, he doesnt complain.

Well well well, each person has his own opinion on this topic , for me ,I am after the brand too. Not only because it's creditable but also its' good quality. The most important point that I care is good quality

I use to be the one that shop for bargains. Buying store brands versus name brand and i realize that some things you have to pay for. Quality does taste better in certain products. For example, mayonaise...I only buy Kraft mayonaise -NO store brand. Next time you are in the grocery store compare the store brand mayonaise with Kraft and notice how the store brand looks yellow looking while the Kraft looks white. Basically you pay what you get.

I agree too. Doing the grocery is sometimes too exhausting just thinking and making the decision which is which. Sometimes our common sense is the way to go.

I would be with you on this front. I agree that branded products have consistent quality but if one searches then one can find similar quality products at much lower prices purely because there are no expenses on adv and also the company is not in a position to demand premium for the brand.

Well, I believe that doing the grocery sometimes needs a little research and study. I spend a lot of time in doing the grocery just by reading packages and comparing products. All this just to save more money.

Yes, my husband is the same way. Most of the time the off brand has the same basic ingredients so its usually just as good. Sometimes even better. There are some things I want buy generic or else am picky which generic version I buy, like cola. Either I want Diet Coke or Kroger brand Big K diet cola. I will drink Sam's Club too though. The other generics I don't like as well. As far as most other stuff I'll buy generic.

My parents are somewhat like that, my dad does believe that a product that is much expensive is really of better quality than those cheaper ones. He believes that quality comes with a specific price. I also have that kind of mentality at times, most especially when I am clueless about the product, not having any idea of the competition makes me think that the more expensive it is, the higher the quality is. I would always depend on somebody else's referral maybe, if a friend or a relative refers a product then eventhough it is the cheaper one we learn to trust the product.

I agree with you on the referrals. Yes I sometimes do take friends' word for it. It save me the trouble of trial and error. thanks.

well i happen to know that a lot of the same companies that produce the higher pried brand also produce the cheaper one too, so i am sure that alot of the same stuff is put into it, but i dont think the more expensive one is necessarily 'better'!

Well as they say.. more expensive good quality but if you are practical enough I dont think you will spend a grand just for a lipstick.. You are just buying the name not the content of that box.. Hello??

My mom use to be like that. But to me you are just paying for the brand name. the generic products are just as good as the name brands. If you look close you'll see that most of the generic products have the same things in it as the name brands.

I think most couples are like this. I have no problem buying an offbrand item. In food I dont think you can tell that much.. I think if your on a tight budget then your on a tight budget. I dont really know how to tell you to settle this.. and yeah probally somewhat of a male thing.

I hear ya! In my experience, men just pick up what they want, things that they recognize. They don't even think about comparing prices. My (ex)husband was like that, but after we went shopping together a couple of times he really learned how to check for prices and saw a major difference. He was great about watching for sales and turned into a pretty good shopper.

I think you are partly right. its always not the costliest that is the the best. I also like to save money by not buying the costliest one in any variety. But earlier I also believed that costliest is the best. now money matters.

Sometimes I will also choose to buy expensive stuff. This is why my husband says I choose something expensive than the right thing:) In my opinion, expensive products stands for the good quality.

I believe some expensive products are of good quality too. But sometimes I also consider my budget. When it comes to clothes or shoes, I am more after the quality and it is usually more expensive too. But it's ok because I could use it for years.

Some items are just as good as the other so in that case you can buy the cheaper one and it would be alright. Like pastas and cannned goods. As far as toliet paper goes and other claening prducts, you get what you pay for and will wish you had shell out a few extra bucks for the better quality product.

My in-laws, when it comes to cleaning products, they try almost everything new that is in the market, and with the toilet paper, we can always pay extra for the quality. you are right there. thanks.

this is definitely a male thing!! although not all of them are like that. my husband also prefers quality brands for certai n items that he thinks should have good quality and he always says that quality comes with a price (and now i say that too). us females (well, me at least) are more to low priced items that will "just do" because the lower the price the more items you can buy!! i guess it has something to do with women being shopaholics.

That's funny! My husband prefers branded higher priced products than cheap geneeric ones, too! He says you usually get what you pay for... (yeah, like the packaging and the brand name...hehe) Being a woman, I guess we go for the cheaper products. (We are after all known for being bargain hunters... hehe) I mean, why get a higher priced one when they're almost the same? Hmm...
