TV keeps me awake

I have read an article regarding sleeping that watching television keeps you awake and you are less likely to fall asleep when you are watching tv. That is true for me because when I watch tv, I sometimes feel sleepy but I never fall asleep. However, with my Mom it is the reverse. I noticed that when she turns on the tv to watch her favorite shows, just after a few minutes...she has fallen asleep. Does watching TV keep you awake or make you fall asleep?

It depends on what time of day it is as in the morning it wakes me up and in the evening if it not a real cliff hanger show I will fall asleep.

It depends on the show whether I'm sleepy watching television. There are a few shows that no matter what time they are now I'll fall sleep. The last few weeks The David Letterman Show has been putting to sleep, so I'm getting in a nap and afterwards can come on the board and post.

In my case, I am more like your mother, when I watch TV it makes me sleep easier than lying down and wait for my tiem to sleep it takes me longer to sleep without TV switched on. I do think that is not a generalized statement to say TV keeps everyone sleepy. Although there are times when I am kept awake by TV if the show is pretty interesting to watch that I cannot let go of but that rarely happens to me at all.

I like having the TV on when I fall asleep, and my husband likes having it off. I find it relaxes me, helps shut off my brain, which allows me to fall asleep. Without the TV distracting me, my mind keeps on going with stuff from the day - and I just can't fall asleep.

I have also read somewhere that watching tv can cause you not to sleep well, however I can only say for myself that this is not the case i always go to bed and out the tv on for a while as I find it helps me get to a nice sleepy stage and then when the tv goes of I get straight to sleep where as most nights I dont watch tv before going to sleep i end up laying in bed thinking about all the things I need to do in the morning and in turn i ended up not getting to sleep for hours so i think it is just about what helps you relax and switch of at nights, everyone is different

Sometimes I sleep through the program I intended to watch. If I am tired, it is almost impossible to keep awake - always better go to bed and sleep in that case..!:)

Yup. You will not be distracted by the show and you'll save on your power bill.

Watching tv puts me to sleep...but then I watch mellow stuff like Law and Order and reruns. I watch it to relax.

Watching television makes me fall asleep many times but if I get up and do something else and sit back down, it will keep me awake. I fall asleep in front of it almost every day at one time or another and many times at night. Then when I get up to go to bed I cannot sleep! Sometimes it depends on the program I am watching. If the program gets too boring I will go to sleep very quickly and if I wanted to go to sleep very quickly, I would just watch the infomercials that are always on.

If I am really tired I will go to sleep. It will put me to sleep sometimes when I am watching, and if you cut it off I will wake up.A lot of times I will watch it to go to sleep. If there is something on I am not interested in I get sleepily.

Well im not exactly falling asleep within a few mins when watching tv but i do put the TV on in my bedroom when i goto bed. The TV really helps me sleep, usually watch a dvd if theres nothing on tv. Once took me a week to watch Die Hard because i kept falling asleep about 20mins after i started watching it and the next nite i had to pick up where i left off. I think it really depends on upbringing on if this keeps you awake or sends you to sleep. When i was being brought up, my parents used to put the tv or radio on in my room, because i hated being alone. It was soothing to have noises and images in the background when i was trying to goto sleep so that it didnt feel like i was alone. Not that, thats the reason i do it anymore. Just got so used to it now i have trouble sleeping without anything going on in the background. TV's my favourite option though. However my girlfriend is exactly the opposite. She was brought up to never have a tv in the bedroom and prefers to fall asleep in silence. The TV tends to keep her awake and she ends up having to wait until i goto sleep and then switch the tv off before she drifts off.

TV is supposed to wake you and not let you sleep. But for me if I sit there I start yawning soon but may not sleep there. I can't ever sleep with light on.. All the lights should be off for me to sleep properly in the night. I cannot sleep in the daytime also..

If I can't sleep at night, I find that tv or a dvd is the only thing that will help me sleep. During the day it doesn't, unless I haven't slept well the night before. So I would say it keeps me awake I suppose. It's the same with books usually I can read for hours at night in bed, whereas some people only read a few pages and fall asleep.

It kept me awake because I wanted to finish whatever I am watching. I don't want to go to sleep thinking what happened to the characters. I can't fall asleep with the TV on, I tend to listen to the noise or sound I hear from the TV.

This is an interesting topic and something I have experimented with. I have had a trouble with insomnia since I was a small child. Tylenol PM and other OTC things never worked for me. Natural remedies didn't work either. Finally when I was 16 my sister told me to try to go to sleep with my TV turned down low. She never had a sleeping problem, but noticed the TV always lulled her to sleep. So I tried, and it works. That is how I go to sleep. Now granted, I don't sleep much at night at all anyway. But whatever sleep I do get, I get with the TV on.

With me it all depends on what is on t.v. and what time it is.If it is a good film and it is early evening, I won't fall asleep. But if I try to see the same film around my bedtime, I will fall asleep.

i share your sentiments. tv keeps me from sleeping on time. i can be up until 2 am. i really cant sleep soundly until finished a show. i would be bugged with the thought of what could have happened if i turned it off before a show ends.

It depends on,what position I'm watching tv. For instance if I'm sitting on the floor and watching it than I can stay awake. But if I'm watching a movie in the bedroom and laying down than I do fall asleep.

It has less to do with watching TV then it does other things. So, if I am watching TV sitting up, I probably won't get sleepy. But, when I lay down, I will almost always get drousy and either fall asleep or just go to bed. What keeps me up is caffeine later than arout 2 pm. Then, no matter what, I will struggle to fall asleep. I also struggle to sleep just before that time of the month. Sorry if that is TMI. Just wanted to show that TV has less power over me than caffeine or my own hormones.
