Where did that come from?

Have you ever had a discussion that you posted 6 months ago suddenly pop back up because someone responded to it after all that time? Does it take you by surprise? Does it make you think, "Wow, they really must have been digging for discussions to have found that one"? Do you think discussions should be deleted after a certain length of time?

lol..yes it's happened to me once and I was taken by surprise and I realized also that once a person responded it came up on the discussion page again and many more people responded to it after that.

It makes you wonder why the first person brought it back up to answer. I understand when its in the forefront others answering that had never seen it before. I guess the first person is really doing you a big favor.

When I add a new friend and if I don't have much to do, I usually check their old discussions and respond to some that I am interested in. I don't even check how old the discussion is. So, sometimes that's how the favour happens:)

I don't find that it's a matter of digging for discussions. Often older discussions turn up in the list at the bottom of another discussion you're checking out. Which means it's myLot rather than the person doing a new post on an old discussion that causes its sudden revival. http://mikecrowlsscribblepad.blogspot.com/2007/02/one-thing-leads-to-another.html

I am very grateful when my very old and ancient discussions are dug up like an archaeological find! Because it means that people are interested in my discussions and some of them I can't award best response to because they don't have any responses to them, so they sit there useless, for that part I wish they were deleted, I have year old discussions which suddenly arise out of the ashes like a phoenix! I think they belong in the archives! They must take up valuable server space at Mylot HQ surely?

I love your answer Wolfie and as I said to someone else I never thought about the space the discussions would take up, but you are right, can you imagine the number of discussions and how many gigabytes we are talking here?

Yes that does happen to me every so often. It does happen when someone looks at your profile and start checking your questions. Nothing can be deleted on mylot... because every question and answer is tied to our payout. If you started deleting your questions... not only you would lose the money you made out of those questions... but so would everyone who answered them. It does not matter that you have already been paid six months ago. It would be taken out of the money you made this month.

Plooker idea of programming... is to sit behind a big desk with 100.000 money boxes on it... one for each member. He watch his monitor... and everytime someone answer a question... he open his wallet... takes two cents from it... look for the money box of that member... and put the two cents in it.

I'm certainly not doubting your word, I simply just don't understand if you have already been paid for it, why you would lose the earnings. I can see where you could learn potential earnings from someone answering to it again in the future. Maybe I'm not understanding the big picture.

Hello kbourgerie. Usually when I go and dig up an old discussion of my friends on my list, it is out of friendship though sometimes I might not be related to that discussion at all. I do this just to help my friend's discussions to pop up again for more relative responses to get it activated once again for giving the response a new life. I do not think that discussions should be deleted because their existence is very helpful for us to later go back and find some of the helpful information from the responses. They are just like our stored memory sticks as a reminder to us. Thanks for your good discussion.

As I've said before, being a "neophyte"...I am still learning to navigate (and with my computer, too)...so what I have found myself doing, is travelling thru sites and zeroing in on topics of discussion from those people that I have learned to respect, and admire on myLot. I always know they will have something of interest to apprise us of...or something really thought provoking! I am glad that your topics have not been deleted..."no" I don't think they should be..cause often something "old" becomes new again. Cheers.

I think its really cool that you have considered other person's discussions in that light. I can certainly see the advantage that would hold for them. Thats very cool.

A lot of times when I look up discussions to respond to on mylot I do a search for tags of things I am interested in which brings up discussions from way way back even. So sometimes if someone wrote something from a year ago and it comes up then I respond to it if it has something I feel like responding to!

Yes I have also had this happen. I Have as well dug through old disscussions. Sometimes there are so many posts, I don't think some of them get the responses they deserve. So I think it is good that they keep them for a good while.

I've had a few of those surprises, too. I'm not sure how they find those old discussions, but it's kind of fun to see them come up again, usually with a new take on the subject. I don't think they should ever be deleted, as long as mylot has the space to keep them.

It does make you wonder how they find them. I've wanted to ask the person responding a couple of times, but never did.

It's funny I was going to start a discussion about this very thing. Yes, I mean, I'm kind of flattered that maybe someone went through my profile page (or maybe even responded via their email notification of old notices) and found a discussion they wanted to respond to, but it's one thing I think if it's the kind of discussion that is "timeless" that is, wouldn't matter when the discussion is responded to, but totally weird when say it's a discussion about Thanksgiving only cropping up..I mean some discussions have obvious time limits, right? No I don't necessarily think discussions should be deleted entirely...sometimes to make a point in another discussion I'm responding to I'll dig back to one of my old discussions--like I did just tonight about one person thinking about declawing her cat (which I'm against)..it was a good discussion and had good links about the issue

First of all brilliant minds must think alike. LOL. Sorry, if I took your post, didn't mean to. I understand about some discussions having time limits, if they are specific to a holiday like you mentioned, but I guess there are those that feel that they can still contribute to the discussion and do.

Even though they were running inactive for a long time, there are discussions that will still be useful and will interest others. Personally, I use the mylot search engines to look for certain discussions and even though it was there a year ago and got only few responses if it interests me to share some opinion, I will still respond.

Thats really cool that you use their search option for discussions that interest you. I guess I have been very limited in my way of thinking as far as finding something to respond to.

well, you have tons to respond to i see here. grins i have had that although not after that long. i mean it is long for me but it definitely hasn't crossed the 6 months line. i'm also surprised by it as i didn't think that i'd ever get any responses. as for discussions being deleted after a certain length of time, everyone has his/her own opinions but for my case, i think it should be up to the individual. because like you said, some people actually dig for discussions or they like to instead of looking at new ones, go for older ones. thus deleting of discussions i feel should lie in our hands. someone gave quite a helpful suggestion by suggesting that there should be an inactive folder or something. that way, it can be our choice if we want to delete the discussion or not.

An inactive folder would be a good idea. As you suggested then you would have the control over what you might want deleted or what you may not.

I have done it. Responded to a discussion that was a year old. That was when I was very new at this and still hadn't figured out the timeframes. I actually brought up a discussion asking why they were left active so long and was pretty much shot down by responders who felt that they should never be inactivated. So now I just watch when the posts were originated before responding. I feel they should at least be flagged as inactive after a certain amount of time.

Thats cool that you brought up a year old discussion. You made it active again for the person that posted it.

One of my discussions is back after one year...and is still going... Maybe they should be in inactive folder. It is easy to find those discussions. Just look at similar discussions to this one in the bottom of this page and you will see all related discussions. This is how people find discussions too answer.

Sure, it happens to me all the time. I had some that are a year or more back that are bumped up from time to time too. I do think it happens to everyone every now and then. You may not know this but when a discussion of yours get deleted, you lose earnings - and all those who respond lose earnings too. Are you sure you want that? If you want, I am sure something can be arranged lol.J/K:P

J/K? It is short for just kidding or just joking. The :P is sticking out a tongue. They are supposed to soften the tone of what was said before. Turning anything that sounds even remotely negative to actually positive.

Well I'll thank you for your generous offer, but I'm ok with where they are, inactive or not. I'm not suggesting they should or shouldn't. It was simply a question. What does J/K:P mean?

Kbourgerie, Sorry for the name I use to address you before. About the discussion, I am still 2 months old here to be exact, the oldest discussion I have would be 2 months old already and I did notice that some of it was answered even after a month. I am not surprise anymore as I do also respond to some discussions older than 6 months. It is just easy to track those discussion because if you have notice discussions we respond to contains related discussions just below the page, so there is big chance of seeing it again. Which is I think nice because it will give us another discussions to read which we might be interested of and subscribe. I think that is the reason why we receive credits even before the earnings update.

I have only just been here 6 weeks. But I got a BR yesterday (show off) from a discussion that I had no recollection of having replied to. There is the occasional reply to a post that I put up 3/4 weeks ago.

Other than technical reasons,if it passed the standards of mylot why it stayed on in the first place, it should not be deleted. It's our marks of progress in any topic. We can always backtrack for anything for an assignment in school, or while writing our books, preparing rebuttals for face to face debates, etc. It's another documented reference that may have mostly subjective views but part of it are derived or linked to their own references, other websites they visited or seminars they attended. After all, it's documented and veriable anytime should we be questioned while citing it. It's a relatively unlimited threads of references and knowledge sharing.
