Have you tried tofu?

Before you say "oh that stuff is for crazy vegetarians-I need my meat! think again. It is healthy to take a break from meat and have non meat nights and tofu is a great substitute. It's healthy, low fat and can be very tasty. I marinate mine in soy sauce, ketchup manis, garlic, ginger and onions and leave it for a few hours before frying it in a fry pan. I have given this to carnivorous men and they've all loved it. My dad calls it 'toad food' but still eats it whenever I cook it. Have you ever tried tofu? Would you try it?

Here is some info about tofu from wikipedia.com: Tofu is low in calories, contains beneficial amounts of iron (especially important for women of child-bearing age) and has no saturated fat or cholesterol. Depending on the coagulant used in manufacturing, the tofu may also be high in calcium (important for bone development and maintenance), and magnesium (especially important for athletes). Tofu also contains soy isoflavones, which can mimic natural human estrogens and may have a variety of harmful or beneficial effects when eaten in sufficient quantities.

Tofu is made from soybean milk which is basically soybean crushed in water. It is then hardened using an edible form of plaster of paris (olden times) and then steamed & cut into its blocked shapes. Some tofu is left to harden in the snow in some parts of China while others are left to ferment like cheese after the cooking process. Depending on what you like, tofu comes in different forms and stages - thin pieces suitable for wrapping around meat and such, blocks and even deep fried chunks used in soup or noodle curries.

I have only cooked tofu once, in a stir-fry. I have eaten it many times though! I have had it as a fruit dip. I also eat it every time we go to my favorite Japanese restaurant. I get the vegetable hibachi which is made with tofu. Miso soup has tofu in it too. Tofu takes on the flavor of what it is cooked with. I do not like Tofurkey or that soy sausage either. Though I like tofu, I don't like everything that is made with it!

OOooh tofu, one of me&my wife's favourite dishes. And who said it's for crazy vegetarians? It's actually a very common asian dish, especially for us Chinese. Did you know you can actually cook it with mince pork, as in steam it. You can also fry it & cook it "sa po" ( claypot style ). It's so nice, yummy!~

I love tofu, but not as a break from meat. I want meat, in moderation, yes, but meat, please. Hubby will not eat tofu. I don't do ketchup but what is "manis" as I don't know that term.

Ketchupmanis is a thick, sweet soy sauce. It's good stuff. Available in the asian section of your supermarket and great in stirfries..pretty much everything!

Oh, you mean Kecap, with brown sugar and molasses and, of course, ground coriander. I wasn't aware that another name for it is "Indonesian Ketchup."

Hi coffeeshot! Yes, I have tried tofu and still is a part of our menu nowadays. Hubby just loves it and welcomes the change in our diet. I do marinate it so that it will taste good since it really taste bland. I do agree with you that it is a healthy substitute for meat. Take Care and Happy Mylotting!

I have never tried tofu, and must admit that I would never really want to. I certainly would not go out and buy it anyway, although if someone had some then I guess I would try it just to see what it tasted like. I like what your Dad calls it, that is quite funny!!

I haven't had anytofu for awhile but I do like it when its mixed with flavorful foods like veggies and soy sauce and those items you just mentioned It seems to absorb all the good flavors and gives meaty textures to foods too. it is good to have a meatless day every once in awhile.

I have vegan friends who prepare and serve tofu beautifully. I'd never mistake it for meat, but it's got it's place in the kitchen. Saying that, I don't prepare it myself. A bit like TVP products, I've never managed to get it to retain any flavour and I'd rather do without than eat an inferior product. That's my poor cooking skills though, not the fault of the tofu! My favourite tofu dish, as cooked by my friend, is a curry containing tofu and fruit. Yum!

I have heard of it, seen it, been around it,but never tasted it. There are some foods that just the thought of turns me away, Tofu being one, others are soushi, calimari, and any type of snake. I just can't bring myself to try them.

Yes, I have tried it deep fried, steamed, pan fried, in soups, in noodles, in a skin-like form and even as a meat substitute. Most meat lookalikes for vegetarians are made from tofu with seasoning and colour. My favourite way of eating tofu is to get it fresh, and then top it with a mince meat mix fried in oyster sauce, soy sauce and pepper & salt to taste and topped with spring onions. *drools*
