I myself was a teacher few years back and used to teach primary class students. I taught for 5 years and used to get overwhelmed to see the way my students used to respect me. Once I had gone to the airport to receive one Australian couple. There, one of my old students who saw me from quite far, came all the way to me and greeted me. I was thrilled. This Australian couple was watching, they were surprised to see this gesture of my student and said that he has travelled to so many places but has never seen so much respect for a teacher. Is it true? Are the kids getting more & more rebellious and do not bother to give a small token of respect to their teacher? How do your kids behave with their teachers?

Im sorry to say that this is true. However this may differ from school to school, country to country. In my school teachers don't have any control over the class so a big part lies with the teachers. A lot of people who want to be a teacher get tested badly these days. The new wave of teachers (not all) can't control the class and can't handle the stress. I'm not proud at all to say that in my 4 years of high school i have had 5-6 different maths teachers. And we students suffer greatly under this, they all might have different methods of teaching so every time we got a new teacher we had to adapt once more. But also the children these days are getting more rude, lack of discipline and respect for elders, i personally obey these rules and my place. The problem needs to be solved, these rude students will have to find work someday and have children of their own. The future doesn't look good.

Don't get so pessimistic V1ctr0!Just make yourself positive ,everything will be fine. I do agree with you that in a large class it becomes difficult for a single teacher to control the students. Actually these days many school authorities are trying to put not more than 20 to 30 students in a class so that teacher can give attention to each student. Yes, children are also becoming rude so first responsibility is of parents to control their kids and then of teachers. I am so pleased to know that you obey the rules. Good Luck!

No Victro, you didn't ofend me at all. I am also observing the quality of teachers these days. Everyone wants to become a teacher without taking their commitment seriously. So I can say that there is more supply than demand in this field.

Lol sorry ;p But it's true, these days the children are from the ME. The millenium edition. Children are rewarded for things like: well you draw a nice tree, but the child doesn't need to be rewarded for the drawing but for the time he spend on drawing it. Because this is often forgotten a lot children don't even try anymore because they know they will get rewarded for something. I'm sorry if i offended you about the teacher thing but again that's true as well. Good teachers have this factor (call it the X factor) that gives them the ability to make complicated things easy and fun, some teachers can't. I think that these days newly graduated teachers are just tested on the knowledge of the lessons but not the teaching it self. At least that's what i experience in class.

I am a primary school teacher and I would say that most of the children that I teach respect me and that the majority of the ones that I used to teach respected me. However there are some exceptions. I think that children aged 4 to 9 are mostly respectful but some children aged 10 to 11 can become less respectful. I like to get comments from parents that appreciate the teaching given to their children but it means far more when children write a note or draw a picture that shows their respect and appreciation.

I have been given some really sweet poems, little notes and lovely cards from the children. It means so much to see them smile and enjoy learning. Thanks for giving me the best response.

Oh yes maximax, I still remember when children used to make greeting cards with their sweet little drawings and poems. These cards they would make for the Teacher's Day which is celebrated on 5th of Sep. every year. I would see the enthusiasm on each child's face which would give me immense pleasure. What more can we ask from students!

Maybe this is not true to all but that is happening especially for the teachers who somehow have touched their lives, students will be remembering and delighted when they will see their teachers again but for those who were just a teacher in the classroom, never reach out their students in some way, I know they will be ignored by their students. I have known many teachers and they have different approach and different ways in dealing with their students. Some were miss and remembered but others didn't! So, I can say that, that student of yours remember you and respected you because you were not just her teacher before, maybe a friend, parent and adviser!

Thanks for the complement Capricorn. Yes its true that whatever work I take in my hand I do it with sincerity. When I used to teach, I would observe each and every child's face if he/she has understood what I tried to explain. I agree with you that there are many teachers who just do it for money hence there is no bond between the teacher and the student.

I have seen some students who do not really respect their teachers. It's alarming that they do not give regard to their teachers. I teach in college and I have seen some students not respecting their teacher. I have had encountered some students who can't talk politely and courteously. Most of my students are respectful and sweet though...

No, teachers do not get the respect that they deserve from kids now a days. I am pulling my son out of public school and he is going to go to school online for a few years. No fault of the teacher, but they are SO overwhelmed and there are SO many demands on passing certain tests that they don't really have time to teach what they need to teach. All the school worries about is thier ratings and not really about the students learning. I mean, the online school they have the testing also, but each teacher takes the time for the students online. They call the students and they get one one one teaching if needed, not only by the teacher, but the parent can help out also. Kids are so quick tempered anymore. They are too mouthy too. Now, my one son, I have 4, he LOVES his teachers. Much smaller school setting and more of the one on one learning with the teacher. He has had the same teacher for 4 years and has come SO far in his learning. If it was not for this school and the teachers he has now, he would have tried to drop out a long time ago. At this school, if there is a classmate upset, the teachers are not afraid to give that child a hug, if needed. Kids even hug each other and give each other support. That is what kids need, loving support. Kindness in the classroom, not hurry up and get this done and I don't care if you really know this or not, just score good on the state tests.

I agree with you kaysue that rather than taking care of emotional needs of their students, they are more worried about their ratings. Its really sad on teachers' part. on other side I am so happy to know about your other son's doting teacher . I hope all teachers become like that then the schools will be a wonderful place for the students to study.LOL!

That is such a nice story. It's good to hear things like that. My child would never dare be disrespectful to a teacher or even an adult. He is always complimented on how respectful he is to the teachers and classmates. The teachers use him as an example of his behavior and attitude all the time. He makes me very proud to know that even when I'm not around he is being a great kid.

My students have been good to me and after a few years I have had students visiting me and keeping in touch. Now I have relocated and there seems a bleak chance of getting in touch with those students . If I had been in my earlier place I am sure I would have had them come to me with the same respect they showed earlier[many of them].

Hi Kalav! For sure, had you been in the same place students would have definitely been in touch with you. I have also relocated now but in the same city, but time to time(though now very rarely)whenever I meet them at some place the way they give respect to me is remarkable.

I don't think children give respect to many people at all these days. It isn't just teachers who are getting disrespected. I don't think alot of children even respect themselves these days. I had a really hard time with my daughter but I finally got her on the right path. I make sure she does not act like the other children she goes to school with also.

Your daughter will exhibit the values which you inculcated in her. Now since you got her on the right path, she'll not behave otherwise but yes temporary bad behaviour traits do come in a child from time to time which you'll have to handle very carefully.

You must be a good teacher then. I think it depends on the teacher because Some teachers are just crap and thats why they don't get the respect. The teachers who I had in my life who reached out to me and who showed me that they cared.. Got my respect. teachers who didn't care and did nothing but sit on there butt (which i had a lot of) didn't get my respect. I mean, I wasn't ever really disrespectful but there were a few times when they pissed me off and i said stuff I probably shouldn't of said but the way i see it is... if a teacher wants respect then they better give there students a REASON to respect them. and by a reason I mean showing that they care and that they aren't just there because its there job. teachers like that shouldn't even be teachers.

Truly sameroad, it becomes sole responsibility of a teacher to correct student's mistakes and not the student. Most part of child's future is in their hands so they should patiently handle the problems of their students.Time to time we used to have meetings in which we were asked to take care of even the weakest child of class with patience. There should be a close bond between a teacher and her pupil. So Good Luck to you!Hope ypou get good teachers in future.

When children are not taught respect at home, they rarely exhibit it elsewhere either. Often, when a teacher does attempt to discipline a child for bad behavior, they are met with opposition from the school administration as well as the child's parents. Children today know what a parent or teacher can and can't legally do to discipline them, and they don't hesitate to use that factor when it works to their advantage. It is unfortunate that it is true. It is also unfortunate that hose children who choose to act in such a way take much away from others who wish to behave and wish to learn.

I agree with you that first and foremost kids learn basic values at home which they exhibit later at other places. These days students, specially of growing age are forming unions and the way they misbehave with teachers and school authorities is awful.

I taught at university a few years back. It is always nice when former students come up to you to say hi. Most of the time I remember their name or their face. The way students are with teachers reflects on the teacher. If he was good to them (not necessarily soft) then they will be good to him also. If they feel that they have learned a lot from a teacher they always remember this and will be grateful for it. It's funny because when I was in primary scholl I was always in awe of my teachers. Everytime I see them I would try to be on my best behaviour. It's not that they have been scaring me but because I had great respect for them. For the knowledge that they can give me. When I started teaching the students' attitude had changed. They were more friendly with the teachers. There wasn't the same amount of awe that I had but they still respected us.

Ya ,I feel that students in the age group of 4 to 10 respect you. With senior students teachers should behave in a friendly manner to command respect from them. So teachers ought to change their attitude with the age group of their students.

I am not really sure but here in our country, it is not true. Students still respect their teacher. I can say that there are lots of effective and efficient teachers here that is why the students really respect them but I think there are other students that don't respect other people but most have.

Thats a good news that students respect teachers in your country. Surely if the teacher is dedicated there is no reason for students not to give respect. So teachers must be taking their responsibility seriously.

It is true in most cases because i am a teacher and most student, not all, i find very disrespectful. Student curse teachers and are sometime violet towards them. But i don't only blame the student, parents are also to blame for their conduct. Because respect first starts at home.

Absolutely jessie, students' behaviour starts from home where the values are inculcated in their minds. It develops later on in schools. I think though easy to say but difficult to implement is that only patience can handle such kids upto some extent. But yes there are studnts who,no matter how much you show patience, are insolent therefore you can't help it.

My personal response to this is that nowadays respect for teachers are lowering. As the world is modernizing, new thoughts are emerging and students are experience the new ways of life which bring new thoughts in their minds. Compared to the thought of their teachers, there is a mis-match between their thoughts. Thus, the students and teachers are always in conflict because of the difference of generation and/or thought. It is noticeable nowadays, that after school hours, students make lots of noise on the road. They all try to prove themselves, they have an attitude to make people feel their importance. That's why they try to differentiate themselves. This is from my perception because I witnessed many cases like this. Teachers must be more friendly or students must be more formal? This question arises now...

With growing children teachers should be friendly and there should be a good rapport between the two . This way students will have respect for their teachers and teachers will also enjoy to teach. Best way to handle such students is to keep their temper under control.

I can agree with you half with this. I agree some students (Generally the teenage population) are not participating (EX: Not doing homework, reports, ECT.) But, some teachers are mutually doing the same. Out here where I live, I have heard so many complaints about this school. Some of the teachers yelled at students for no reason at all, a teacher out here threw a student onto a table, and HE STILL HAS THE JOB AT THE SCHOOL!!!! during my school time, I did my work, and didnt get into trouble. I do agree some students need to pull their heads out of their (Insert word ) and start paying attention :)

Yes, I agree, the students nowadays do not pay respect to their teacher. I have no kids currently, but I have been a temporary before, I have the experience. Besides that, my brother's girl friend is a teacher, she also mentioned her experience from the students. I think the students become unrespect because the parents nowadays over love their child, over cover them from any punishment.
