Today I saw a video on CBS that floored me I could not believe what I saw. If you saw someone hurt would you try to help them or just walk away? A 70 something year old man was crossing the street when he was struck by a car . Unbelievably people just drove by didn't pay an ounce of attention, people walking on the streets went up and looked at him then just walked away. Here is the link it is on video www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/06/national/main4158744.shtml I am just sick that people these days are so uncaring.

It is very sad. I admit I'd have to stop and think about it first..why? Cause very often the person, the good samaritian, the one that offers help, is the one that is later sued or jailed for one thing or another. I see/hear it all the time. My son is in law enforcement..I hear the first hand stories. LIke you said..what is this world coming to...but then again, we have to protect ourselves too - talk about between a rock and a hard spot!

Yeh ,i do agree with you that now some one do the good thing may be deeply hurt at last .Sometimes the persom who you saved may be thanks to you but his/her family members may not do that .On the contrary they will let you undertake the loss which should not be yours ... But i think whenever it happened ,we should find a public phone and call the hospital or the police ,trying our best to do something good ... Although the world is so reality and cruel but if we all do a little good ,it still will be warm and beautiful...

Oh I'd call 911 or police or something like that. And I'd probably even go ask to help them, but then again, if I ask and don't do what they say or do what they say and that results in a problem and they come after me later because their current bad problem is a result of what I did or didn't do... I mean I could stand there and direct traffic away from the person to keep them from being hit by cars and they could sue me for not helping or allowing them to die or something like that. Just a "decide at the moment" thing in life and hope for the best

Sadly, it doesn't surprise me a bit. Apathy is the wave we seem to be riding as a species.

I didn't know about this, until my husband told me. I saw the video on foxnews.com and was in complete utter shock. First, the people in the cars, just hit him and left him. The 2nd car didn't just hit him, they also ran over his legs with the back tires. People on the street didn't do crap, except watch to see if he would get hit again. Now what really ticked me off, was seeing cars drive by like nothing was laying in the road. I think the son of this man, should sue the city for not doing anything. My husband said this was like the episode of Seinfield, where they witnessed a fat guy being mugged and they just stood there and did nothing. Now this 78 year old man is in the hospital fighting for his life, I do hope with the help of the cameras, they will find the drivers and make them pay. I would bring every person in that town to court, to ask them why did they ignore this. All it took was 4 people one on each side of him, to block traffic, and each of the 4 to call 911 for this poor soul.

You can not get sued for comforting someone, If you are not certified in first aid or cpr you can not do anything physically but what on earth stopped someone from just sitting by his side? or from someone stopping the cars from coming. I watched several cars just go around him. I happen to be certified and I would have done what was neccessary to help him either way I would have taken that chance of a law suit. A human life is worth so much more than anything I own. It is horrible that people just passed by him they should all be ashamed of themselves.

I am sad by the whole matter and in shock. I can't believe no one pulled over or stopped to help. I just cant believe they let him lay there. I wonder how long they would of let him . Thank goodness by chance the cop was able to help. Just wow . so cold and heartless.

I saw it too, it made me sick and they kept playing it over and over on the channel I was watching. I would like to think I would be brave enough to risk my own life to try to help him but you never know what you would do in a situation like that. I do know one thing for sure, I sure couldn't just stand there and do nothing. I would at least find a phone and call 911. What a sad world we live in first that anyone could hit someone and not stop and second that people could just watch and not try to help.

This is why some countries have "Good Samaratain " laws that make it a crime not to stop and offer help. Maybe we need to think about doing that here. Thankfully, in my area everyone seems to offer assistance pretty quickly. I once stopped when a woman's car capsized and she was stuck inside. I ran to the car along with several other people but pulled back a bit when I saw the car smoking. I thought it might blow up. Fortunately, it turned out to be just powder from her airbag but some brave souls wre not deterred even by that. They went right up to the car and attempted to open the door and extracate her. They were unsuccessful and we had to wait for the fire comany. The firemen said they didn't think there was any danger of an explosion but they still spray foam on the the car before getting her out. I always thought those people who didn't even flinch when they saw that smoke were prety amazing. They were real heroes even if they were unable to get the lady out.

I saw it too and was sickened by it. Had I been there, I would have gone over to the man and sit with him, trying to talk to him until help came. I was so overwhelmed that I had to turn the tv off. I never found out if the man lived or not...does anyone know?

I saw the clip of that yesturday on CNN and I was not surprised. Now a day nothing surprises me any more. At first i thought that it was a young person but they made it clear that it was an older person. The car kept going and so did all of the cars around the man. Those are the things that will happen in the city. If it doesn't involve you they will keep going. Then from time to time you will have a few that will see if the person is alright and that is rare too. Now I know that the same camera that too the footage. They should be able to get the license plate of the car that kept going too. I hope the find the person.

I realy cant believe tha people can just be that uncaring. I mean, it would break my heart to see something like that but people today care mostly for themselves although it is not always like that. Yesterday it was raining and I slipped and fall down the stairway. There was this man just 2m in front of me walking down the stair to and the same moment I fell, he, although he was in a hurry, and I know he was in a hurry because he was was walking so fast when he passed near me the first time, ran back to help me get up and he even gave me his hand to help me and he asked me if I was all right. There was also a woman who was coming towards me but she was some 15m away, she ran to help me too but I got up already when she reached me. Then she asked me if I hurt myself and started giving me advices what to do if I don't by bottom to swell. This brings back my faith in people and in their kindness but they were both at least 50 and the man was even 60 I think. I wonder if there were any younger person there if they would help me.

this is beyond disgusting. it is inhumane. of course i would help in any way i could. whether it be calling 911, or just holding his hand or trying to stop the bleeding etc. but to be so callous is truly scary and something i cannot wrap my mind around at all. i did not visit the link because i think it would make me sick.

I am too disturbed by the lack of compassion nowadays from the human race. People are so obessed with the me factor that they forget about others. When I saw this it really made me sad. Sad for the world, humanity, and people in general. There is a lot of things wrong with the world today, and we are starting to pay the price! I would stop and help. It is in my nature. I believe that we all have to look out for eachother, not just ourselves. Thanks for being one who still cares!

I just watched that today as well and was blown away. I have never understood how people can be like that. I can't even be next to some one in the store when they sneeze and not say "God bless you". I really worry about the world that my kids are going to be living in.

I saw this on the news this morning. It sickens me to think that so many people would just walk away or drive away and do nothing to help this old man. And then to have no witnesses come forward and give any information about the car that hit him? SICK! SAD!

I saw this too. I was so shocked. It made me cry. He was just out to get some milk for his coffee. I can't believe no one stopped. People actually drove around him. It was terrible. I would have tried to help him. I would have tried to stop traffic. Something, anything would have been better than what actually went on. Glad to know there is someone else who feels something about this matter.
