My myLot Rating Decreased. I Was Warned! I Know Why It Happened.

United States
July 30, 2008 12:06pm CST
Since I've joined myLot I've posted or replied to nearly 1000 discussions. For the first time since I received my star rating, my star rating has went down from 10 to 9. I was warned that this would happen after one of my posts was removed. But I didn't really think it would happen. Well I know why it happened. It happened because of my support and enthusiasm for Democratic Presidential nomimee, Barack Obama. I've started many posts supporting Barack Obama's quest to become the next President of the United States of America. I've replied to many posts saying why Barack Obama isn't qualified to be the next President of the United States of America. In debating Barack Obama, the majority of discussions have been civilized and well thought-out. However, once in a while, you can tell from certain replies, that some people take our debates personally. I've been called names, my credibility have been questioned and some of the comments aimed at Barack Obama have been nothing less than hateful. But never have I taken it so personally as to click on the negative (-) button in reply to these personal attacks. But it seems as if this has happen in regards to me. myLot is a place where we should be able to discuss issues openly. I can understand giving a negative rating to someone who start or support inappropriate issues. But to give a negative rating because I support and defend the Democratic Nomimee for the Presidency of the United States is just wrong. We can always agree to disagree. In conclusion, here is my remedy. I will be sending a email to the myLot administration, asking them to personally review all posts or replies that receive a negative rating. I'm sure this doesn't happen very often, so it shouldn't be a burden for them. I will be asking the myLot administration to remove the negative rating if it's not unwarranted or not justified. Remember this. We should always be "Fair and Balanced". Lloyd

Lloydanthony, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Somebody pointed out to me once that all a "10 star" rating tells someone about you is that you are too much of a nancy to speak your mind! LOL, with you that's not the case, but I don't think anyone takes the rating system too much to heart! Good luck!

Some of the best contributors here have low ratings, is all I'm saying. A lot of the "10" people contribute solely to "what kind of cat would you be if you were a cat?" and the like. And McCain supporters have notoriously low ratings, granted a lot of them do resort to name calling and that may be the source, but it's possible Obama supporters are doing the same thing that was done to you. I don't see any reason to change the way you post, I think you bring good information to the table, and though I don't always respond, I do enjoy your posts! So you no longer have a perfect ten, almost nobody with something of value to say does!

Hi Lloyd, sorry to hear this, someone did the same thing to me because this person did not like my opinions in a discussion. It is a shame people stoop this low because they don't agree with your views. This is why I wish they would get rid of the stars and ratings all together. Have a nice day buddy.

Hello Howard. I remember when your star rating went down to 9. I couldn't believe it because I never seen anything writen by you that would offend anyone. It's ok to disagree, but they shouldn't take it personally. I might just ask myLot to rid themselves of the star rating in my letter to them. I'm still formulating what I'm going to put in my email to the administration. Hopefully they will consider my suggestions. If you have any other suggestions, feel free to contact me with them. Lloyd

Don't let it get to you Lloyd as it's happened to a lot of us. I don't participate in religious or political discussions and I still went down. I don't care really because it doesn't mean anything to me. Keep posting your discussions and don't let the rating discourage you from giving your point of view. Happy mylotting!

It's ashame that so many people here at myLot say they don't participate in religious or political discussions. You should be able to discuss these topics in a mature fashion. I will continue post my feelings about the upcoming election. I truly feel that this is the most important Presidential election in my lifetime. Thanks for your reply. Lloyd

I wouldnt put too much creedence in it LLoyd. I went up to a ten and then down to a 9 withnin 24 hours. THen I got a 10 went down to a 9 the next day and back up to 10 the following day all with the same rating. I thing these things happen. It is best not to take them too seriously. I dont really careabout star ratings personally, but it is weird when drops for no reason.

I'm sorry the Republicans have struck you too, they did me as well. I use to have a 96 rating that fell to an 87, now I have no idea what it is. I don't care. I think it's awful to mark someone negative because you don't agree with them. I have had rude responders to my discussions and haven't marked them negative. I believe that you are right, you support Obama. If I was some holier than thou extremist, my rating would still be where it once was. It totally amazes me that 98% of mylot are Republicans 1% Democratic and 1% doesn't care. I always find your topics of great interest I commment when I can, I always rate you positive, the problem I believe that most have with you is that you support your claims with actual facts and most are completely unable to do so.

I agree with you. Negative ratings should not be given because they disagree with your opinion. I, like you, have received many inappropriat responses to my discussions and have never rated them negatively. I don't know how many myLot members are Republican or Democrats, but it shouldn't matter. I'm glad that you take interest in my topics and comment when you can. Thanks for the positive ratings. I do try hard to support my posts with actual facts. I do a lot of research before posting here at myLot. Lloyd

That's a big yes Annie, I don't know how many times I have been insulted because I didn't agree with close minded Republicans here. There's one I have clashed with many times, I'll be nice and just say it starts with a g and I couldn't believe when they responded to a discussion outside of politics of mine and I was like are you the same person that was calling me stupid just a few days ago? It truly amazes me.

Hello Lloyd, You know that I am highly political. And yes, my star has been knocked down twice before. Each time it was because I was undeterred in my presentation of my personal truth. So, the fact of the matter is that if you want to enter the most provocative arena in the history of mankind, then you kind of have to expect to get a knock or two. I'll share three other points: 1. Good luck getting a review! 2. (This is really directed more toward the MyLot community than to you personally, Lloyd) It's really OK to approach a discussion from a neutral position. If someone presents their point well, then by all means give them a plus. If someone provides a perspective that you disagree with, though it is reasoned, and presented respectfully, then give no rating (neither a plus nor a minus). Thereby reserving the minuses for the really nasty, contentious, bad attitute, OR verifiably incorrect and perhaps dangerous responses. This is a way of truly agreeing to disagree, wouldn't you agree? In embracing such a practice, we can agree to not punish people for their contrary perspective, yet we can still debate them. 3. I will try to be as objective as possible here, Lloyd. I certainly can't speak for anyone but myself. However, I'm more inclined to believe that your reputation may have taken a 'hit' because of comments that you have made like the one below (from this discussion): "I will not stoop to their level, but I wonder what's really going on upstairs. Lloyd" Essentially, you are saying that if someone disagrees with you that they may be mentally deficient, and are behaving beneath your standard. Yet, in this discussion you are saying that we should agree to disagree. The way I interpret it is that you want it both ways Lloyd. I.e, you want to be able to lash out at those who say means things about Obama, even if they sincerely believe those things. Yet, you don't want anyone to lash out at you for saying mean things about the people who don't like Obama. How is that fair and balanced?

Hello ladyluna. I know that you are highly political. I respect your point of views because I know you truly believe them. I also know that you do your research before posting. We rarely agree on anything here at myLot and I've never ever thought about giving you a negative rating because of your opinions. I agree with your approach dealing with discussions from a neutral position. The negative ratings should be reserved for those who post nasty, contentious or verifiably incorrect and dangerous responses. My comment "I will not stoop to their level, but I wonder what's really going on upstairs" may have crossed the line, but I would never go out of my way to give that comment a negative rating. Thanks for another well thought-out reply. Lloyd

I didn't take Lloyd's comment, ""I will not stoop to their level, but I wonder what's really going on upstairs," in the same way as you did. You say, "Essentially, you are saying that if someone disagrees with you that they may be mentally deficient, and are behaving beneath your standard."; I interpreted Lloyd's words to mean he won't stoop to their level of giving out negative ratings and calling names and hurling insults at someone who doesn't share their opinion and I think that's also what he meant by wondering what they really have going on upstairs. Why is it necessary to say "mean things" to each other personally to begin with, no matter what our opinions may be about the candidates someone else does or does not support? When I discuss issues such as politics off line I do so without insulting those who disagree with me or trying to "punish" them in some immature way. Saying the candidate someone supports is an idiot is NOT the same thing as saying the person that supports him or her is an idiot but when it gets turned around to that level that is not a sign of either intelligence or maturity. You get a big, 'ol plus & a kiss for that one Lloyd! You stepped up to the plate, considered an outside observation, and made a judgement call. You acknowledged that perhaps the comment was over the line, and put it into your framed perspective. What more could anyone ask or want? That's what agreeing to disagree is all about. Many more Mylotters should give the approach a try. In fact, a friend of mine recently responded to one of my discussions. Our perspectives were absolutely contrary. Yet, our respect for each other's consideration must have shown through, because a third party commented on how very civil our disagreement was. Incidentally and humorously, the disagreement was focused on civil disagreement. The point being that you sought 'maturity' and were willing to monitor your own self to make sure that you were meeting your own goal. That's what it's all about, my friend. Not whether we agree or not. Not how many people we can sway to our side. Nope! It's all about whether we're ready, willing, and able to walk the talk that we're preaching. If we are, then we're all on the same side!!!

Well I gave you a plus, so that should be a move in the right direction. I have been stuck on 4 forever cause I have a big mouth and apparently more than one person doesn't like it, but oh well. I make my point and I have gotten a good bit of positive comments so I'm not too worried. I have personally never seen anything you have posted that deserved a negative mark so if the administrators to check behind you and look into this I hope they will undo the harm that has been done.

Well this election is much different from any election that we have ever seen. There have been a lot of major first this go around and things are seriously changing. Hilary wasn't the first woman to run for president but she got further that G.F. did by a long shot and Obama is the first black/biracial person to get where he is. Jessie Jackson tried but he never got close. Obama stands a good chance of going all the way. I'm sure there are some people out there who are not very comfortable with the situation all the way around. And I know for a fact that there are some people who are very VERY unhappy with it. And with you being a supporter of Obama, odds are they are not happy with you. It is stupid and ignorant but I hear it all the time.

I am soooo over the star. LOL. I just can't care. I post to many controversial topics. I'm surprised I'm still an 8. I liked the red 9 and the 8 is a pretty yellow. DOn't know if I will like the 7 very much. But 4 is a beautiful purple. People don't know how to use the rating system. Either that, or they call all their friends to go to various discussions and neg whatever poster they disagree with. The way I look at it, the lower my star goes, the more I am getting under their skin. I consider it a badge of honor.

Good luck, Lloyd! I sure wish myLot would honor your request but I somehow doubt they will. I know exactly what you're talking about, it's been happening to me as well. I was between an 8 and a 9 for the longest time until we got into the heat of this campaign and just like that I dropped like crazy and now I've been hovering around the low 7's. Just when I bring it up a hair, someone knocks me back down. Also, my ranking in the politics interest went from 50-something to over 200 and thereabouts. I know there are many here who disagree with me but it seems like members should be ranked in interests by being active in that interest and being knowledgeable but apparently it doesn't work that way. I sure hope you don't allow this one group of members discourage you from making the interesting posts I've come to look forward to from you. Keep fighting the good fight, my friend! Annie

I think the ratings are supposed to be about the topics and not about the opinions about the topics..........if that makes sense! So if I started a topic about vegetables and someone didn't like them, they shouldn't give me a negative rating just because they don't like them, but state in their discussion that they don't and that it was a good topic. I think I would agree with you when a discussion gets on things that become political or religious since people tend to take those discussions very personal instead of being objective about them. I agree that you shouldn't have a negative rating for what your discussion is about, only if it is a bad discussion.

What you've written does make sense. Ratings should not be based on one's personal opinions. There's room here at myLot to reply to any discussion instead of just giving them a negative rating. I don't know why people tend to take discussions about religion and politics personal instead of objectively. I guess it's just the nature of these types of topics. Lloyd

Hello, lloydanthony111. I just think that you should not worry too much about your star. I mean, since this is a website in which we all can discuss, people will naturally rate your comments negative if they do not like it. It is just the way it has to be, isn't it? Why should anybody give you a PLUS if they didn't like what you say? Having a 10 Rating Star is great, it shows that you really can respond with quality and in a good way. However, having a 9 Rating Star only shows that you are human and that you cannot please everybody. Just keep up the quality of your posts and soon enough your star will be back to a dark blue with a 10 inside. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Good day Iloyd...That's the problem with politics some can and will get personal specially during debates. I think discussions like in politics, one should be aware that it is the issue we're debating and not the orators/opinion givers. That's why I stay away as far as possible from political discussion specially when the thread starter is somewhat fixated and narrow minded when it comes to their political candidate. Anyways the star can only tell as much but discussions you started can always tell us more.

It's ashame that you stay away from political discussions because some people are offended by your personal opinions. People shouldn't be so narrow minded. If John McCain was to convince me that he would be the better candidate when it comes to the war in Iraq, the economy, healthcare for Americans or any of the other issues that affect the American people, then I would support him with the same enthusiam. I don't think it's fair for a post to be deleted because you want to support Obama. Everyone's entitled to his or her own opinion in this free world, what more here on cyberspace? I have yet to give a negative rating to someone because I always think it'll backfire on me. But I suppose giving you negative feedback is unwarranted just on the basis of clashing views. People get touchy about a lot of stuff, and, since this is online, some people are a lot nastier than they would have the nerve to be if face-to-face. I wouldn't worry too much about the drop in star rating. I disagree about this not happening very often, however; anyone who voices any sort of political opinion or contradicts misinformation risks running afoul of people on here. The current rating system all but ensures that having any sort of controversial opinion risks your rating.
