We Almost Lost Our Baby

As some of you already know, our beloved kitty Anna Belle was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism back in mid July. We started her on a daily regimen of medication for this, as prescribed. All seemed to be going well, until the week of July 28th. My daughter in law was visiting for the day, and I mentioned to her that I hadn't seen Anna Belle roaming around the house as usual that day. We checked up on her, and found her laying beneath the rocking chair in my bedroom. She didn't seem to be herself. However, by the end of the day, she was downstairs and eating normally. We gave her the thyroid meds for the next couple of evenings, and I found that she'd vomited each morning after this. I decided to discontinue the medication the next day, as the bottle warned to watch out for a possible toxic reaction. I phoned the vet the following morning, and she agreed with my decision. We were heading into our holiday weekend here, and as per the vet's instructions, I was to withhold the meds for the next four days, and call her back on the Tuesday morning. Saturday August 2nd started out as a normal day, with my daughter and I both home. We were both downstairs, when we heard our kitty vomit in the upstairs hall. I didn't think too much of this, as she's always had a very sensitive tummy. A short while later, she vomited again, and again, and again. I counted a total of around fifteen times. The last time, she threw up some blood. I knew something had to be done. Since it was the holiday weekend, our regular vet wasn't in. I managed to locate an Emergency Animal Hospital, phoned them, and they said to bring her right in. I enlisted my friend and fellow pet lover, to help me. I had no idea 'our girl' was so sick, as the whole thing escalated really fast. She was in bad shape when we got her there. If I hadn't realized what was happening, we would've lost her that weekend. They had to admit her, as she was severely dehydrated from all of the vomiting. She also needed a series of tests. She was there overnight for two nights, and was administered a variety of medications through IV. We brought her home on the Monday morning, although she wasn't eating or drinking (yet). The bill was extremely high, but thankfully a member of our family helped out with this. We'll be paying her back over time. Fast forward to today, and she's still on a diet of special cat food, and won't take enough water on her own to keep her hydrated. She'll only lap up a very small amount, so we're giving her water with a syringe. She really hates having the water squirted into her mouth. We're also almost finished a two week prescription of antibiotics. The diagnosis has nothing to do with her thyroid condition. The tests show she had a severe case of pancreatitus. This sometimes happens with older cats. She'll be twelve in December, and we've had her since my daughter was six. She's a very important member of our family, and we love her so much. I hope and pray that she'll make a full recovery, and we'll have her with us for a long time to come. We've been told the condition could reoccur, and if so, we'd have to take a serious look at her quality of life, etc. This is the first I've been 'able' to talk about it here, as it's been an extremely upsetting time. Do/did you have a pet that's an important member of your family? Has your pet ever been seriously ill? Did it cause you to realize (even more) just how special they are?

I am hoping and praying she recovers as well. I had a cat, Spooky, that was about 12 years old when we bought the house 5 years ago. She was a loving cat that we got free from a fellow employee at that time. She needed a good home and I took 2 cats that day. Anyhow about 4 months after buying the house Spooky one day walked almost in circles with her head hung to the side. She also did not use the litter box, nor did she eat or drink anything. Anyhow turns out she was in the midst of kidney and liver failure due to old age etc. Shortened now, I had to put her to sleep. I held her in my arms as she was put out of her misery finally. She glanced up at me with sad teary eyes one last time as if to say goodbye then her head dropped and she was no longer in pain. As I held her I cried a river as she was MY cat and loved dearly. Someday I want to get another cat but the memory is so sad to this day. Thanks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi Grandpa Bob, Thanks so much for your prayers and support. She's still not herself, and isn't eating and drinking yet as she should be. We have to chase her down with a syringe, in order to make sure she's getting enough water. I'm so very sorry to hear about your Spooky, and I can't read what you've written without tears streaming down my face. Here I go again. I'm so worried that this will be our experience as well, and don't know if I'd even have the courage to be there, and do what you did for your kitty. I think I'd have to be 'wheeled out' of the place, as I'll be a basket case. Thanks again. Hugs to you.

Oh my pye, you've reduced me to tears too. I'm so sad to hear about your Tommy and Mickey. When you're an animal lover, it's almost impossible (for me, it's not possible), to read or hear about such experiences, and not be moved. Hugs.

You have brought tears to my eyes here as well Grandpa! I was there for my Tippy (Dog) When she had to be put down... I sat on the floor and she fell asleep with her head in my lap... I wouldn't have had it any other way!!! I do hope you get another cat someday! :) Thanks for sharing as always Grandpa! ~Heavens~

I know just how you feel. My Rainbow Angel Divot had pancreatitis and spent time at the emergency vet. He did get better from that, but went to the Bridge 2 years later from what we think was cancer. Those ER vets are miracle workers. I love our 4 cats dearly, but he was special. I miss him every day. There is nothing like a cat purring in your lap to make a day turn wonderful. Prayers for your sweet girl. I hope you have many more happy years with her.

I'm so sorry to hear about your 'baby.' I'd never even thought of pets getting pancreatitis, but know it's a horrible thing that humans can get. You're right about the ER vets, as they are amazing. We dealt with several of them over the two day period, and each one was just as nice, and caring, as the next. In fact, some 'people doctors' could take a lesson from them. Sad really, as this shouldn't be the case. Thanks for your prayers and support. Take care.

Having a pet is a wonderful experience, in my opinion. It teaches us how to care for, and be responsible for 'someone' totally dependent on us. Yes, there are many people in our lives too, who need our care and attention, but there is much benefit in loving and caring for animals as well. Thanks for your response, and welcome to myLot.

Thanks for the update on this yesterday Mom! At least she is eating something and drinking some on her own now...I do hope she continues to get better and better! My Mom had a cat at one time who she named Smokey.... She ended up with Crystals in her urine and her care was going to be more than my parents could afford so we had to have her put down.... I am glad that you were able to give Annabelle a second chance at life!:) Enjoy her while you can and I wish you all the best in this! Love and Hugs ~Heavens~

Hi heavens, You're welcome. It's always so sad when these decisions must be made. It is too bad that vet's care isn't more affordable, as so many just can't provide long term care. This has made us very aware that she could have another episode, and there won't be a positive outcome. We're just taking one day at a time, and enjoying the time we have with her. Thanks for sharing here, and Love and Hugs to you too.

We had a little dog named Honey who kept getting pancreatitis. Wow what a horrible time it was for her. She was in so much pain and would not eat or drink when this would happen. We almost put her down because of it one time. I was in Mexico on vacation when she got sick my mom told my daughter to have her put down. My daughter could not do that so she took her home. Honey was fine after a few days. It is so hard to lease a beloved member of the family and then on the other hand you do not want to see them suffer either. Good luck girlfriend and I hope she gets better and has a long happy life. Our kitty Sammy has two lumps on her side. They are around her left front arm pit. I have not taken her in to the vet because she is eleven and I have seen the doctors take these things out of animals around here and they only spread. The first one came about a year ago now she has a second one. When she is in to much pain I will have her put down. I know I do not have the money to get her cancer treatment. (I do not know for sure it is cancer) But if it is cancer I do not have the money nor do I drive to take her to UC Davis which is a two and a half hour drive from here. She has been in the family for a the eleven years and part of my heart. I will miss her but I do not want her to suffer.

Hi teapotmom, I am so sorry to hear about Honey, and can sure relate due to Anna Belle's situation. She's doing much better now, but still isn't eating right as far as I'm concerned. We're also fearful that the condition will return, as we were told it could by the vet. We don't have the funds to continually have her in the hospital, and I dread the alternative, if it comes to that. Thanks so much for your concern for her, and your kind words. I'm sad too, to hear about your Sammy, and do hope that it doesn't turn out to be cancer. It's so difficult to know what to do in these cases, but in the end, we can't see our beloved pets suffer. Like Anna Belle, who's going on twelve, I hope you have your Sammy with you for some time to come. Take care.

You're welcome. I sincerely hope that Sammy's with you for a long time to come. Thanks too, for your concern for Anna Belle. Unfortunately, she's been vomiting again (several times) over the past few days. I'm keeping a close watch on her, and she's not suffering either (right now), but she has been laying around (again), more than usual. So hard as you've said, when these things happen to 'our babies.'

Thanks for your kind words. I know we do not want to lose our beloved pets but we do not want to see them in pain. Like I said I am not doing anything about the lumps on Sammy's side because every time I have seen doctors do anything with lumps on pets tumors it turns out that the doctors make them worst. As long as she is not suffering I will be ok with it. She is doing fine she does not have any problems with her movement and she does not act like she is in any pain or sick so I will leave well enough alone. I am glad to hear that Ana bell is doing better. I hope she has a long time between flair ups. Good luck to her and you my friend.

Hello, I have not been on myLot for a very long time! Too busy. I am going to make an effort to visit at the very least 2x's a week, it's relaxing and everyone needs pal's. We have 2 cats that are family members. My husband and I do not have any kids so they are our children. There names are Spike (male) & Spunky (female). Spike had a bout last week of vomitting and being under the weather. I had a veterinarian come out and check him out, he thinks he was just upset from passing hairballs also they both had tapeworm. Tapeworm is very common and it comes from your cat or dog eating a flea. This confused me because both cats are indoor only. The vet said all it takes is a flea to get on one of us and come in the house or it comes from under the door (there are a lot of outdoor cats in neighborhood). Before the vet came I was sad and worried, I could't imagine not having our babies! Pets bring so much happiness.

Hi FaithInMangosteen, I've seen you around before, and am glad that you're going to be back here some. I haven't been on as much as I used to be, but I still find some good reasons to spend some time here. I'm sorry to hear about Spike, and am happy to hear that the cause of his illness was found. I'm aware of tapeworm, but have never heard of this happening before. Unfortunately, our Anna Belle has vomited again several times, in the past few days. We're keeping a close watch on her, and I'm still very much concerned that we'll end up losing her. Our pets do bring us so much joy, and when something happens to them, it's a reminder to enjoy them while they're with us. Thanks so much for sharing here. Take care.

I am sorry to hear that she is vomiting again, the two of you will be in my prayers. It is not easy to think of them not always being with us, I hate that we have to deal with these things in life. I wish there was something I could say or do for you and her, I send a big hug!

I am so sorry to hear of these medical problems with your baby.. I hope she does well.. I lost a cat a couple of years back and it almost killed me.. Birdie was my baby, but she was also a "Magnificent Warrior" or "Mighty Hunter" as my husband called her.. She would not stay in and one morning we found her our in the road, she had been hit by a car, it broke my heart.. We do get attached to our "babies" and love them so much.. We have a dog now, (4 people yrs old) but she is not just a member of our family, she is "Royalty" and will not tolerate being treated just as a lowly member of the family.. I do understand and sympathize with what you are going through... I will say a little prayer for her and hope she does do better soon.. My sister had to have her Collie put to sleep about a year ago and it broke her heart, it was a few month after we had lost our mother and the 2 situations together almost got the best of her.. We do love our pets and they can be a part of our family.. Good luck to your baby.. Donna

Hi Donna, Thanks so much. I'm so sorry to hear about your 'Birdie,' and can relate to this too. We had many cats when I was growing up, and they all went outdoors. A couple of them disappeared, never to be seen again, while several others were hit by cars. I remember one winter, there was one that didn't return home. We always had 'tons' of snow, and there was an old car parked outside a garage, across the road. When the spring thaw came, there was our beloved kitty, partially hidden by this parked car. He'd been hit, and had been laying there frozen all winter. So heartbreaking. I am sorry too, to hear about your sister's Collie, and for the loss of your mother. I really do appreciate your sharing here. Take care.

Im only ten so if this is childish it because my age, my step dad had a dog for 15 years, Trigger the pit bull,he was old and he used to kill the stray cats that would get in his moms yard, while my grandma (she was keeping him at her house) went of to Jamaica she left him with us, he use to sleep in my room for the 3 days or so we had him, and I had a small television in my room, so one night I woke up and turned it on, it was so cute when he glanced up at it ( he had never seen a tv before) even after I shut it off he stared at it, the next Monday when I came from my dads I heard the his stomache just split open out of nowher, and he had to be put down. ALL HOPES YOUR CAT LIVES TO 15.
