Do cops make you nervous or make you feel guilty?

I am always nervous when I am driving and I see a cop on the road. Even though I am going the speed limit, all of my lights and signals work and I am using them the lawful way, and I am literally not doing anything wrong that a cop could take exception with and possibly pull me over for, I always feel guilty like I am doing something wrong simply by being on the road. So, how about all of you? Do you always feel like you are doing something wrong when a cop is around even if you are doing absolutely nothing that can get you into trouble?

I know! LOL! I do realize that they are very necessary and that they keep us safe but, I still feel guilty because they have the power to ticket me for something. I am very appreciative of what they do for those of us who behave ourselves. But, I can't help but feel like I am doing something wrong when one is driving behind me! LOL!

Yup, I feel the same too, when I see a cop riding by, or a police car behind me. Even though there's absolutely nothing wrong with my driving or my car, I'm still nervous! And I can't get rid of this feeling of mistrust or dislike of them - it's terrible when they're supposed to be protecting us, and we can't trust them!

I just have to ask, have you been given a reason or experienced something that gives you the reason you can't trust them?

No, I am fortunate that I've no incidents with the police. However the reports of police brutality, misuse of power, and even the case of a policeman raping a victim who went to his police station to make a report - all these we read and heard about in our local media & from others who have had unfortunate incidences with the police - is bad and frightening enough! I'm never sure what charges they can trump up - speeding against a non-existing speed reader, running against a yellow light, or whatever abuses of power and authority! To me, the greater the distance from them, the better it is!

We have some crazy drivers in my area too. My hubby has a motorcycle that he drives sometimes to save money on gas but, he is always nervous because people are so crazy on the roads in my area. Not as bad as other countries I have been too but, scary enough.

LOL--not so much cops but security guards in stores. Now I KNOW I'm not doing anything wrong, yet for some reason security guards seem to follow me around..I'm talking about security guards that are "plainsclothesmen"...ones not in any kind of uniform but try to blend in and act like customers....I can spot them a mile away as they always pretend that they are "shopping"...yeah right with one of those customer basket things that remain empty. Must be something about me that makes me stand out or look suspicious in their eyes. Oh, and here's another goodie...many stores have those metal detector things...there's one Duane Reade near me and I don't know what it is (maybe all my silver jewelry??) but dang it...the alarms go off every time I'm ready to leave..had that happen to during the different court appearances I had to go to two years ago...sure enough always set off the alarms....so of course had to have one of the guards use one of those detector wands do a search on me. So I KNOW I'm innocent, yet yikes it makes me feel like a criminal or terrorist...LOL

The clue that I knew that they were plains clothes guards was that they be there ALL the time no matter what time I'd go into the store...as for me being HOT...nope...I think I just stand out a bit more since I don't dress like everyone else...the classic different drummer type. To give you an example what I mean. One time I was in the supermarket..the cashier kept staring at me..Finally she asks. "What profession are you in?" I say photographer. She says oh, that explains it..you're very artistic looking..

Pye...you must be something Hot! I, to my knowledge, don't have that problem with security guards. LOL! But, I also don't know that I would know a plain clothes security guard. LOL! So, maybe it isn't that you look like you are up to no good. Maybe they just can't take their eyes off of you and they are drawn to follow you around! LOL!

I also assume that you will not pass a cop, even though you are doing it legally, and he is going slower than the posted speed limit. I have gotten used to not paying any attention to cops around me lol. I live with one. One of his buddies followed me the other, purely coicidental lol for probably 25 miles. They all know the car I drive, it is registered in his name, and has an identifying sticker on the back trunk deck. So they always know it's me lol. Once, one of the guys called him and asked if he still had his Mustang, he said 'yes', and then was asked 'does your girlfriend drive it?' He said 'yes, what did she do now?' Like I am always doing something wrong like speeding or something LOL He told him 'oh nothing, she was just going a bit fast' LOL So, obviously he ran the tags to see who the owner was. Just one of the little perks I am afforded.

LOL. The only time I'll pass one is if it is a 4 lane road and he is going below the posted speed limit. Now if I had to go over the speed limit to pass him, or had to do anything remotely illegal to pass him, then no, I wouldn't either.

You are lucky to live with a cop! LOL! And, I am the type of person not to pass a cop even if they are going below the speed limit. I just don't intend to do anything that will draw attention to myself! LOL!

I do not drive, but if I am out on the streets and I see the coppers I just feel so guilty. I just feel like I have committed a crime, I am sure I must have guilty of something written all over my face, yet I have done nothing! I am surprised that I have not been stopped and frisked or something before now because I look so guilty.

LOL! I try to make sure I have a nonchalant, innocent, not guilty of anything face going when I see cops out while I am out on the road. LOL! I probably even look like I am trying to have that face so, I am sort of surprised that I haven't been stopped for my face too! LOL!

I get like that too when my husband is driving and I'm in the passenger seat. I don't know why but I get nervous when they are around and think they are going to pull us over too. I think the cops here in the US are a lot more scary looking than those in Samoa and NZ - their demeanor puts me right off lol

Yes, unfortunately I am scared whenever I see a cop car on the road. I've gotten more than my fair share of tickets and I alwsya think they will find something. to pull me over for. What I really hate is if they are driving right behind me. I will sometimes just turn down another road because it bugs me so much.

I think its common for all to feel this way and i know they don't like me cause of my store but i don't care and will not give in to their looks..if they stare at me i do the same back to them..I make sure i tell all that we have a right as a human being to be aware of our rights and not to give into them when they try to harrass and make people nervous..if they have to ask then you have the right to say NO...Asking means they need to do something to get into a search of your car or home..Don't ever let them make you feel that you are less a person... Sorry my 60's rebellious nature came out..love to protest..lol..

Dont feel nervous when you see a cop on the road. They are there to help you encase of emergency. As long as you are not doing anything wrong they are your friends.I really admire the Police in your country not like here in our country we cant trust them.Sometimes they are engaged in crimes and they are not worthy in their job. I did not say that all of them, but most of them.this is the fact and I really sad about our law enforcement here in the Philippines. I wish that our law enforcement here will be like in your country. So don't afraid if you saw a cop in the road okay!LOL.

I am sorry to hear that about the cops in your country. There have been a few other fellow myLotians on this discussion to bring up the same problem as you have with cops in your country. We are lucky about that here. But, that isn't to say that there aren't any corrupt cops in my country. There most definitely are. But, for the most part, I think they are upstanding members of our community. And, I know they are here to protect me but, they still make me nervous. LOL!

I used to feel that way until I realized that they just are there to do the job and help people who are in trouble. They did helped me while I went through shock in accident, burglarized attack, and abused. Police only ticked me off because of brutally abuse other people. They did made my friend's knee bleeding because she was simply riding over bike. She did not realize that police tried stop her and thought her as a guy, so they were rough with her. So I did not feel comfortable with them for a while. Every police can be good or bad. Remember they are human.

I am glad they were able to help you when you were in need. And, I am sorry for your friend who experienced brutality from them. I try to remember they are only human just like me but, it is hard to keep that in mind when they have power that I don't.

street cops r good for nothing as they r always after people who do nothing wrong, harass them and ask stupid questions, but fail to catch drivers who r half drunken and break traffic rules...

I don't drive but as a passenger I do get nervous when I see a cop car stopped and the driver does not have his or her seat belt on. I think to myself "oh no! Now we are going to get stopped and the driver is gonna get a ticket."

If I'm not doing anything wrong while I am driving, then no I do not feel nervous if they are around. However I do get a little nervous if I see that they had pulled someone else over. I worry that there might be a shoot out (or whatever it is called), fight, or something else bad between cop and civilian and I want to get away from there as quickly as I can (without getting pulled over myself). This is something I would never want to see, or worse yet, be involved in.

I know that logically, if I am not doing anything wrong, I shouldn't feel guilty but, for some reason, I do...no matter how perfectly behaved I am being! LOL! I, however, don't get nervous when I pass a cop who has pulled someone else over. But, I can understand why you would worry about getting caught up in something like a shoot out.

LOL! That is pretty scary that he followed you around for over 5 miles before finally deciding to pull you over. My guess is that they wanted to try to pull you over and it took them 5 miles to finally come up with a reason. And, a flimsy excuse at that. And, you should feel a little less nervous about them given how connected to them that you are! LOL!

The first 3 months of my driving, I also feel nervous but it changed when an officer ordered me to stop without any apparent reason at all, all he wants was just to bribe him for some stupid charges bout my driving. I was so mad and after that I'd research on traffic violations for my future reference coz bribery here is very common especially if you really don't know anything bout the violations. So now, whenever they pull me in without any reason and accusing me for a violation, just ask this one to them "Do you really know the meaning of that violation? kindly explain it to me and tell me if I really committed that violation." lol! They just apologize to me.

I too feel kind of nervous when I see a cop while I am driving. They do not bother me any other time. Only when I am driving. I am a very careful driver but when i see a cop I will usually either pull over or turn off somewhere to avoid having them follow me even though I am doing nothing wrong. I feel silly but that is the way it is!

You know what, I am dating a cop. I am actually in a serious relationship with him. He said to me, that if a cop is behind you, do not watch him in your rear view mirror. just keep going and don't pay him any attention. He said if you watch him in your mirror, it will cause you to have uneven speed and swirve. That gives a police man a reason to pull you over for a stop. So I have tried that out a few times and it works.

Trust me...I do everything I can to look nonchalant when I am in front of a cop and that includes not looking at him in my rearview mirror. I don't want him to see me noticing him. I want him to think that I am just a cautious and careful, mindful driver who isn't just that way because I noticed that I have the law driving behind me! LOL! Inside my car though, I am practically soiling myself! LOL!
