I think that all you really have to do is go to a clean, trusted tattoo shop and you won't get diseases...Also it's up to you to take care of it for about a week or two after you get it done...Treat it just like a wound, because that's what it is...I've been tattooed on about five or six different occasions, and I haven't had any diseases what so ever...I trust the tattoo shop that I go to...My artist has been doing tattoos for years now... -Mike

If you go to a good tattoo studio, the risks of disease are minimized to say the least. A decent studio would never consider going near someone with a needle that had not been completely sterilized and vacuum sealed. Also, you will notice if you visit a studio that does things right, that they will be sterilizing every work surface, every piece of equipment, the area of skin to be tattooed and their own hands, and then they will put on sterile gloves which they will then change whenever tehy touch something that is not sterile. I know this because I have had a tattoo myself, so I have seen these procedures first hand because I took care to visit a studio that paid close attention to cleanliness. I have actually encountered higher standards of cleanliness in piercing and tattoo studios than I have in some doctor's offices, so the idea of them being dirty, hepatitis ridden places is a misnomer. Of course there are unprofessional people out there who do not stick to the 'rules', and they may well be putting people at risk, so if you are thinking of undergoing any body modification procedure I would strongly urge you to make sure you go to a reputable and professional studio. I would say actually, that provided the studio is sterile, as i described above, the greatest risk of infections is after the tattoo has been done, during the healing/aftercare period. It is vital that you follow the advice your tattoo artist gives you about keeping it clean and helping it to heal nicely as what you have when you leave their premises is in effect an open wound in places. Leave the protective dressing/wrap they put on for as long as they say it has to stay on, and do not play with your tattoo while it is healing. Touching it with dirty hands is a good way to get yourself an infection. If infection does occur, depending on its severity, seek the advice of your tattooist or a doctor immediately.

Diseases that can be transmitted by needle are possible with tattoos. I don't know how tattoo parlors operate but maybe they try to sterilize the needle they're using. However, it's still the same needle and may be contaminated. Some diseases are Hepatitis B, HIV, and AIDS. Those things may be cool but I wouldn't risk my health for these three as they are uncurable.
