A couple days ago we were all sitting out in my front yard..School was out and the cars and buses were on their way down the hill...All of a sudden we here a thump and we see a cat trying to get to the other side of the road, she was dragging her back legs..My daughter was waiting to go to work and saw what happened..so she ran to get the cat and everything was fine until she layed it down in the grass....The cat latched on to her thumb and gave her a horrible bite... My husband took the cat to the vet...It was our neighbors cat but they weren't home...My nextdoor neighbor took my daughter to the hospital and I waited at home with my grandsons... The cat had broken her back and she had to be put to sleep..They had to check for rabies, due to the cat biting my daughter...Because of the bite they had to cut off the cat's head and send it to Harrisburg to do a autopsy on the brain to make sure that the cat didn't have rabies... The vet bill for my neighbor was $222.00..The Fed-Ex bill to overnight the head was $120.00.. My daughter feels really bad that the neighbor had to pay so much but because of the bite it had to checked for rabies..Vet called this morning and there is no rabies....She was up to date on her rabies shots but they had to be sure.... The neighbor was so thankful that we did take her cat to the vet..she was so sorry that my daughter got bit...

That sounds like a horrible ordeal. I have never heard of them cutting off the head to send for an autopsy for rabies....lol. Don't mean to laugh, just sounded a little funny. I could kind of picture it in my head. Anyway, Im sorry your family had to go through that.

That's what I was thinking also. Cutting the head off seems a bit overboard. I thought they operated taking a tissue smaple or something. Not the whole brain and head. Ewwww! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It has something to do with how rabies affects the brain tissue. Testing and looking at the brain itself is the best way to make a positive determination.

Oh that is awful, they couldn't do a simple blood test for rabies that wouldn't cost as much? Isn't that what they do for when an animal bites someone? Well glad to hear your daughter will be fine, she is a good person for saving the cat..

So sorry she got bit. I had never heard that they cut off the head for rabies tests. I always thought it was a blood test or tissue test. This seems sever cutting off the animals head though. Disgusting. I am glad things turned out for the best for your daughter though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am glad that it all turned out for everyone though. I am glad to hear that the neighbor was very sympathetic too. It is hard to find good folks like that these days. I hope your daughter is okay.

I feel bad for the Fed-Ex guy. Can you imagine just knowing you were carting around cat heads in the back of your truck?! I never really thought about who would pay for things like that. It makes sense for the pet owner to, but at the same time, your daughter took that risk so... I guess that's just one of those things where as long as everyone is satisfied with the end result it really doesn't matter. Poor cat having to suffer like that though...glad rabies wasn't an issue!

A few years ago,my family raised four ducks, who were so lovely.I spent most of my time after school on them .When they were still tiny ,I always search for worms with them on earth .Every time I gave them worms ,they became so happy that they wavered their tail. After more than about half of a month ,we had become so familiar that when I came back from school and they saw me far way ,they would run toward me happily for food . Several months later, they were grown up,but the friendship between them and me didn't change ,but bcame closer.I kept catching some worms for them everyday. The were covered with white feather from head to tail. When supper time came ,they would stand in front ,looking at me seriously .This made me can't help giving some food to them.As reward ,they would swing their tails happily... But unfortunately, they were killed by the agricultral chemical .On that day ,I became very depressed and angry .We human kind did so much to hurt our friends .Why not change?

Hi Lakota... My daughter certainly wasn't thinking about what the cat might do..I told her not to hold it close to her face...a bite on the face would have been awful..I am sure she will be more cautious next time... I heard the shots are painful too! Thank you..

Cut the head off? Hmm... Didn't think they did that anymore. That's really odd. Sad story though... && I'm sure the cat bit your daughter because it was dying && scared, probably didn't know what to do. && why did the owner of the cat have to pay for the test?

Hi Foxxee... I didn't know they did that either...The cat was in shock and scared and that is why she bit my daughter...my daughter should not have picked her up.. The reason the owner had to pay is because it was her cat and her responsiblity..but we are going to give her some money to help with the bill... Thank you..

Oh wow! I'm so glad your daughter is alright! I would have done exactly the same thing she did to try to rescue that poor kitty. I'm sad that it had to be put to sleep, but obviously there wasn't anything that could be done.

I must say, reading this gives me the shivers. The poor cat, having it's back broken like that. I am thankful it was able to be put to sleep, to end the suffering. It must have been in such terrible pain. I'm so glad that my beloved kitty is an indoor cat, so this will never happen to her. We're very fortunate to have her with us still, after her recent bout with pancreatitus. I've never heard of them 'doing that' to test for rabies. Horrors! I'm glad though, that your daughter came to this cat's rescue, and very sorry she ended up being bitten. Thank goodness there was no rabies, as it's my understanding the shots are extremely painful. Take care.

It was so sad..and the kids walking were laughing at the cat trying to get to our side of the road..I think they scared it and it took off then got hit..It wasn't funny but the teenage boys thought it was.. My kitties were always indoors....we are going to put some money in a card and give it to the owner to help with the vet bill...My daughter felt horrible that is cost the lady so much.... Thank you..

What a story! It sounds like you have a good and caring neighbor, just happy that you took her cat to the vet and sorry about your daughter's bite. I always thought that if they could show the animal is up to date on rabies then there was no need to test for rabies? Did they say that wasn't enough, or did they not provide proof in time? That is really sad all around, the poor cat getting hit by the car, your daughter being bit, everything. At least it seems all the people involved are quality, caring people and that is what makes it OK in the end. The poor cat was probably in such pain and so confused, and I am sure it didn't want to hurt your daughter, just wanted to make the pain stop. It's best to try to use a thick towel or some protection when helping an injured animal, and you can make a makeshift muzzle with a sheet, bandanna, shirt, leash... It's hard to think of that tho, when it is an animal you know and it is an emergency. My sister had a dog that was the BEST dog! She was so close to my sister and was always by her side. But when the dog was older, it lay behind the car in the driveway and no one saw her. The car ran onto her. She was OK in the end; the vet was able to repair the damage, and it wasn't severe. But the dog was in such pain at the time it happened that it bit my sister's hand, and so severely that her hand was unusable for many months. And this dog LOVED her, and was more like a Lassie or Rin Tin Tin than the average dog. But when they are confused, scared, and in severe pain, they aren't always in control of themselves. I hope your daughter's finger is OK and she suffers no long term damage to it.

That is exactly what happen..My daughter didn't think about an injury to herself, only getting to the cat...and she feels bad because the owner had to pay so much because of the bite to her thumb....We got a card and are going to put some money in it for the owner to help with the bill....because if she hadn't got bitten it wouldn't have been so expensive.... Sorry to hear about your sister's dog...I am glad to hear that she did survive..and just like you said, they get scared and are in pain and don't mean to hurt anyone.. My daughter's thumb is doing better...It is still very sore but the swelling is down and the infection has cleared.... She had proof of rabies vaccine..but because of the bite they had to be certain..and I think it's a law here... Thank you...

How awful, and expensive. Its sad they let the cat out so that it could be hit by a car. At least its no longer suffering. I'm happy for your daughter that it didn't turn out to be rabies too. I know waiting for that is hard. My son was bit by a dog about 10 years ago and the dog spent 10 days in quarentine while they monitored it for rabies. Luckily it didn't have it so son didn't have to have the shots.

Hi Tess... I know that when I had cats they were always indoors...I did find out that this same neighbor had another cat hit by a car in August and they had to amputate the leg...so I don't understand why she lets them outside... The waiting part for your son had to be so hard...I am glad the dog didn't have rabies.... My daughter is doing better...Thank you.

I dont think this has happened exactly, because cutting cats head for checkup doesn't happen and nobody will let that happen. And even for rabies checkup i dont think they will cut the cats head. Iam sorry if wa wrong and if this is truley happened.I feel sorry for ur daughter and even feel sorry for the cat too.

hi Feona a cat bite is really serious and painful too. the poor kitty with the broken back, I bet someone drove too fast and hit the poor thing, animals in pain will bite like that, and it really does hurt a lot. I am grateful the cat was not rabid.

I am glad that your neighbor was greatful rather than angry. As for your daughter, I hope her thumb feels better soon. You did the right thing, even if it was costly. Had the cat had rabies, your daughter would have needed more treatment to keep her from getting ill. I appluad your daughter for her kind heart and trying to help that cat. I hope this incident doesn't haunt her too much in the future.
