Diet Cola vs Regular Cola...What's the verdict???

Battle of the Colas...Diet vs Regular!!! - Doctors say diet colas are worse for the drinker than regular cola because they give the drinker a false sense of security

As most of you may have realized by now, I'm addicted to Coca~Cola!!! My friends are always saying, you drink too much cola, you should switch to Diet Coke. That stuff taste NASTY is the main reason I don't switch. Well, yesterday I was watching The Doctors & they did a segment on Diet vs Regular Colas. They say diet colas are worse for you than regular simply because of the mindset. People who drink diet colas think since they are taking in less calories so they think it is OK to drink MORE. Plus the artificial sweeteners have the same affect on the body as sugar does. You drink the sweetened cola & it makes your body crave more sweets. So, you eat that candy bar that you know you don't need. Now, you're drinking twice as many colas plus eating candy bars & some other sweets. Doctors are saying that since people think they are losing weight, they don't feel guilty for eating more of anything that they get the urge to eat. Will you please share your thoughts on this relatively new revelation???

I like the taste of diet cola better than regular, so I drink diet all the time. I know that I have read that you shouldn't be drinking diet cola because of the artificial sweeteners in it. The regular cola is better for you, but it all should be drank in moderation. I think that anyone who drinks too much of either is somehow causing harm to their bodies.

I used to drink diet colas of any kind. Then they took the saccharin out of them & replaced it with a new artificial sweetener. after that, I just could NOT drink any of them!!! I know what the research says, but it seems to me if you drink 6 regular colas & 6 diet colas, you'd still be better off with the diet as you're swallowing less calories. But they are insisting on their theory & I'm NOT a doctor & cannot disprove them!!!

same like you, i'm addicted to coca cola. i always replenish my 'stock' at home before it runs out. it's like the perfect drink for all occasions. i absolutely detest anything that is diet. it was the taste of saccharine at first. it taste so artificial i never want to put it in my mouth again. now they came up with something else but it taste just as bad. now you have given me just one more reason to stick to regular coca cola. cheer to you

I actually liked the diet colas when they used saccharin. However once they changed over to Aspartame, I found the taste to be awful. I even tried mixing regular with the diet to work myself into the diet but all I did was ruin some good regular Coke so I stopped that. I've decided to try & regulate my regular Cokes in hopes of finding that happy medium!!!

I'm not really a soda drinker at all now. Geez, can't even remember the last time I did drink soda of any kind and you're looking at a former Coca Cola addict especially in my younger years..used to drink gallons of it. But never mind how the artificial sweeteners trick a person to think they aren't being affected by the sweetener and can act the same as regular sugar. I had done extensive research and did an article all about the sweetener Aspartame, which is the sugar substitute not only in sodas but just about anything sugar free.....well after reading all the side affects and health problems it can cause one would be nuts to drink (or eat) anything with it.

I wish I could say I'm a "former" addict. Unfortunately, every time I think I've gotten away from my addiction, I back slide!!! I haven't studied the horrors of Aspartame & was not making reference to that aspect. I'm not even saying anybody should stop drinking diet colas. I just recognized many friends who drink diet sodas & eat tons of extra calories simply because they had a diet cola with it. I know I did the same thing back when I drank them. I find I do better with regular Coke & being aware of what I'm eating. I've cut my intake by 33% per day & have lost 20 pounds in the last month. I plan on cutting more too!!!

Oh yeah. many people don't know that diet drinks and candies are bad for health. The same for people who use splenda and other similar craps. My grandmother is diabetic and the doctor warned her to not used those artificial sweeteners or faker sugar just to replace the real ones. Those are canceric. She can drink a cola from time to time and white sugar should be replaced with honney or brown sugar if feasable. If people want to lose weight, they should do exercise instead of eating diet stuff.

Just guessing...Since you seldom drink even the diet colas, it's my guess you don't drink them thinking you are saving calories & then eating something fattening thinking you are safe!!!

I am a Regular Coca~Cola fan, but don't like Diet Coke. I prefer Diet Pepsi. I know that sounds weird: regular Coke, but Diet Pepsi. Personally, if I drink diet pop (soda), I choose DP because it is smoother than DC. I have also tried Coke Zero, which isn't bad. It tastes like regular coke (not diet), but with zero calories. Some people have said they do not like Coke Zero because it does not taste like Diet Coke. It is supposed to taste like regular coke, not diet.

I find that Coke Zero doesn't really taste like regular Coke yet it is much better than Diet Coke. It contains Aspartame & Acesulfame Potassium. So I guess it is less Aspartame. Acesulfame Potassium can be used in baking because it is stable, retaining its sweetness at normal baking temperatures. This sweetener, which can be used alone, often is blended with other low-calorie sweeteners to produce a more sugar-like taste than that of any of the low-calorie sweeteners alone & is a calorie-free sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar. It has been used for the last 15-20 years with no one finding it's negative side as yet.

Hello LadyMarissa, I don't drink any soda now because of health reason. I think whether the regular or the diet soda still have some form of sugar into them and a lot of sugar is bad to your health. Almost every drink that is sold has some kind of sugar in them and I avoid them because of my health. I tried to drink only water as much as possible. But everywhere you go, soda is easier to find than safe water to drink. So I guess what's available will do. I think it is better if you just drink water and avoid any soda. Regards.

You're correct about the sugar/sweetener content not being good for us. I also worry about our water supply. I can remember when we all had wells & drank nice cold pure well water. Now our water is filled with Chlorine & other unknown chemicals. I now use a Brita pitcher to filter some of the nasty taste out of my water. Now they are saying those filters are not good for us. There are days that I feel like we will be dying from being poisoned by our new fangled inventions. So, why not go from enjoying my sugar-filled cola???

For me, it's definitely the regular cola, not the diet. My mom drinks the diet and let's just say, I can't stand drinking the stuff anymore. Give regular cola any day.

I don't really have a preference because strangely, both taste the same to me. xD Unless I travel between different countries, I really can't tell the difference between many kinds of cola. =S I tend to drink regular Cola more though, because if diet Cola has less calories but tastes *similar*, I can't imagine all the artificial things they're putting in there instead. When I think like that, I can't imagine that any of that stuff is better for you. With regular Cola, at least you *know* what they're putting in it, if you know what I mean. I've never thought about the mindset created by diet Colas though, that was really interesting to read. =P

They probably taste very different, but I can't really tell. =S Although I've never been to the US, I think it's just me. xD I can tell the taste between different countries though because different water is used in production. In Europe, I think it tastes a lot better than in the Middle East. =P

I drink regular drinks. I do not like the taste of diet drinks. I try not to drink too many of the regular drinks though. Diet is probably a little better for you if you drink them in moderation and not drink too many (since they are diet like you were saying) and don't eat all the sweets and other things with it.

It is being reported that the Aspartame causes cancer. I'm not sure how true that is. However, I have been guilty & I have many friends who are guilty & several here have admitted that they are guilty of eating more calories just because we saved a few with our diet cola. That is one thought process that needs to be reconsidered. I seriously doubt that anyone who truly loves their diet cola will pay much attention to this subject for long. I know it has put a few thoughts in my mind & hope it does the same for others!!!

I do not like coke. I am a pepsi fan so I do not drink coke at all. If I have to have coke I will have regular and not diet I agree it is nasty. I do not drink much soda at all no matter what type it is regular or diet. I drink plane old water or coffee or tea. I find I drink more water than anything else. I like the taste of water and crave it. As far as the "diet thinking I have seen people eat more because they think I am not getting the calories from the soda." How are you doing my friend? I hope you are fine. Myself I have been very tired and dizzy for the last two weeks. I have had to take my Valium for the dizziness. I spend Wednesday, on the couch sleeping all day and two days last week doing the same. I wish I could feel well. Oh well this is what I have to go through.

Hi LadyMarissa, I'm one of those people who like to stay away from cola as much as possible, but I do have one once in a while. When I do I prefer the regular over diet, because I don't like what's used to sweeten it with. I would agree with you that people have the wrong idea over diet products and it gives them a false sense of security. My advice would be cut back if you can, but don't switch to diet. Blessings.

I like intelligence!!! I'm not saying anyone should give up their diet cola. But I think they need to be honest enough with themselves to know they can't have that extra candy bar just because they washed it down with a diet drink. I am cutting back gradually. I would love to quit all together but in being honest with myself, it will be a while before that happens!!!

The problem is - all soda is bad for you! They all have a list of ingredients that work against your body's effort to maintain healthy balance. According to Marcelle Pick, an ObGyn NP, "In Eastern medicine, over-consumption of soda - particularly diet soda - is considered to be highly corrosive to the GI tract and the root of many digestive disorders." Have you ever heard of the experiment of putting a nail into a glass of Coca-Cola, either diet or regular, and watching it as it eats away at the nail in a very short period of time. Now imagine what it is doing to your stomach tissue! Regular soda also has sooooo much (way too much) sugar in it! The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) advises that people who eat a 2,000 calorie/day healthful diet should try to limit themselves to 40 grams of added sugar per day (1 teaspoon = 4 grams and 1 tablespoon = 12 grams, so that translates to 10 teaspoons or 3-1/3 tablespoons of sugar per day). Now, 1 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 39 grams of sugar in it so only 1 can has just about the amount of sugar that you should be consuming in one day. Do you drink 12-ounce cans of soda or 20-ounce bottles? How many cans or bottles do you drink in just one day? On top of that, how many other things with added sugar do you eat each day (if you look at ingredients, you'd be surprised at how many things have added sugar in them)? That's a HUGE amount of sugar. It's bad enough that adults are ingesting that amount of sugar, but then they let their kids drink regular soda. It's no wonder there is so much childhood obesity in this country (USA). And diet soda isn't much better, especially for kids. Like you said, it fools us into thinking that we can splurge on sugar in other ways and it keeps us addicted to sugar. On top of that, the artificial sweeteners have the potential of being bad for us in other ways, especially for children. Even though I love my regular Coke, I cannot argue with one word you've said!!!I did this discussion with myself in mind just as much as the diet cola drinkers. I knew I would get just as many reminders why I should give it up & it would give me reason to STOP & think!!! YES, I'm as guilty an everyone else!!! Thank you for ALL the info!!!

I am also a regular cola addict. Even I thought of switching to diet version but because of its yucky taste just couldn't. Now I drink less of cola but sticking to regular cola. The revelations that you have provided are startling but true indeed. people feel guilt-free when they have diet-cola so the intake of other high calorie stuff increases! I think your revelation will be an eye-opener to the so-called diet conscious people! Thanks for the information.

I, too, am trying to cut back on the amount that I drink. I have managed to cut back one bottle a day & I'm working on cutting back even more. I do my best to start the morning with a HUGE glass of water & wait until I'm going through withdrawal before changing over to Coca~Cola. I used to drink Orange Juice in the mornings but now they are saying even OJ is bad for you. Back when I drank diet colas, I was living proof of the guilt-free mentality. I would eat 3 donuts & drink a diet cola for breakfast telling myself that, that beats 3 donuts & a regular cola. But I had NEVER had 3 donuts & a regular cola for breakfast. So maybe they are right!!!
