Bark and you shall receive

I really feel sorry for my neighbor's poor puppy. At the same time, I feel like kicking my neighbor's ***. Truly, she is insufferable. I do not know whether she is trying to "train" the puppy or whether she is applying the biblical principle of "Ask, and ye shall receive" on the puppy. She chains the little thing up and then places a plate of food in front of it, far away from it, and the puppy can't reach it. Then she says, "Bark, and I will give you the food!" The poor, hungry creature begins to whine miserably. Sometimes, she makes it whine for hours before giving it the food. I feel this is really cruel. But, it is useless talking to the woman. The idiot wants a hungry pup to actually bark before she can feed it?!! I can't understand it. Is this the way to teach a pup to bark? Don't dogs naturally bark when they feel like it? I have never "taught" my dogs to bark; yet they warn me whenever some stranger approaches my house. Is this woman cruel, ignorant, or plain foolish? Cheers and happy mylotting

Hi positiveminded, I would consider this to be very cruel.I'm sure there are better ways to train a dog, if that's what she wants to do.All the dogs that I know naturally bark when someone strange comes along. The woman may not consider that she is being cruel, but if she doesn't I'd consider her ignorant or as you say plain foolish. In any case I think someone should report what's happening. Blessings.

I agree that she should be reported. This is extremely cruel and I regard it as torture. I have talked to people who are experts in training dogs and they say that you can only train in kindness and only with what is natural for the dog.

I agree that this is cruel. Usually owners will try to train their dogs not to bark. I don't know if you can call an agency unless the poor dog looks very skinny. Can you see its ribs? If you can, you should definitely call an agency as soon as possible.

Hi noreligion, she does feed it; it is the way she feeds it that is cruel. Nopes, the pup is not physically tortured. So, I guess there isn't much I can do except fight with her, and that I have already done.

Report her to the SPCA. This is horrible cruel and she needs someone to explain this to her. The puppy should be taken away. don't let her continue to abuse the puppy. Who cares if she is angry with you - the puppy is more important than she is and she will know you are watching. Report her now!!

Hello positiveminded1977 I really felt sorry for this poor little animal when I read your comment, Have you tried to contact an animal wellfare organization?, I believe no animal should suffer this kind of inhuman behaviour.

Based on my experiences with annoying neighbors' dogs, dogs really don't need encouragement to bark. It sounds like the woman is just sadistic. Is there a local animal agency you can report her to?

Hi Shiv, you are thinking of "neutering" and "spaying." Nopes, "neutering" and "spaying" is not cruel; it is the only way to save animals from going on giving birth to young ones who have nobody to take care of them. Hanasays, I wish I could report the woman, but no such law enforcing agencies here. We have an animal shelter, that's all. Cheers and thanks for the response.

I think I would call ASPCA and report the person. That is just cruel. Maybe someone needs to do it to her. Let her ask for her food as it is out of reach.

Someone needs to tell that woman that dogs are not mind readers. How is the poor little thing supposed to know what she wants? It does not understand words...like bark....that is just stupid. My own neighbour is the same. She belts her dog and when I remonstrate with her she says that is how you train them. I ask her "train them to do what? Be afraid of you?" If her dog goes outside the yard she yells and hits it with her shoe. The dog knows that when she yells and uses that tone that he is in trouble...he doesn't know why, he knows that he has to be anxious and afraid. I try to tell her that she should teach the dog to "stay" and to come when he is called but she doesn't get it. She is a fricken nasty piece of work and an idiot. If the dog goes out of the yard to talk to certain people, that's ok, if the dog goes out to explore a bit, that's not ok. How is the poor animal supposed to know the difference...he doesn't even come when she calls him, she has to use the nasty voice. It just makes me sick. Your neighbour is being an idiot AND cruel. I know how you feel and how hard it is to witness this sort of thing. Is there a possibility of the police being involved....?I know our policeman would think I was mad if I spoke to him about this...he is also an idiot.

It sounds as though she is trying to train the poor little pup. On the other hand this is not the way to do it. You use treats to get them to do what you want of them not their food. That is just cruel and humane. Have you spoke to her about this, are you a visiting neighbor or not. Not matter I would let her know how I feel about what she's doing. I'd of course do it in a diplomatic way. I'd offer suggestions on how to train the pup. Using his/her food is not how it's done. Treats treats, and more treats.

oh my goodness this is horrifying! i cannot being to understand why is the woman doing this? i've only heard about people trying to get their dogs to stop barking. there are products in the market to achieve this too. but i've never heard of anyone trying to get their dog to bark! letting the puppy go hungry for hours is cruelty. you should call up your local shelter to report her. the puppy will definitely get a better life away from her.

This sounds more like torture to me. Can't you report her for animal cruelty? This is not the way to train a dog to bark. Why does she want it to bark any way. I am always telling my dog to be quiet. I would hate to have a dog that barked for his dinner. I have never taught a dog to bark they just do it.

Yup, reporting her the best way out...it really gets on my nerves when she tells that pup to "bark." I feel like going over and making her bark. But I have already quarreled too much with that woman!

Well I think you should report her for animal abuse and see if she can be taught how to treat her poor dog properly.

Hi positiveminded, I am most appalled to know that some idiot pople can do that to an animal, I would report her or release the dog while she isen't around, that woman should horse wipped for cruelty to the puppuy, it made me so angry, I just wouldn't sit and watch what is going on, I would do something about it, how would she like it if she wanted something and she was made to beg for it, the 'b***h. Hi positiveminded, She needs to be chained up and horsewhipped, in this country it would not be allowed, because animals are cared for here and treated like part of your family and the the law will not tolerate cruelty to animals, wish I cpuld come over and smack right in the face while she is being tied up herself, its really makes me so angry that no one would do anything about it, can't someone take the dog away from her while she is asleep or out? I have 2 chihuahuas...so getting them to bark has never been a problem. Getting them NOT to bark is a losing preposition..lol. Oh well, no one comes to the house without an announcement. Your neighbor is cruel, ignorant AND foolish. When you get done giving her a very well deserved kick in the ***, how about chaining her up for a while? Just out of reach of a telephone...lol.

I just love cats suggestion. I laughed until I cried. This lady does need to learn how to properly train her pup and chaining it up is not an option. If she wants a pup it needs to run free in the yard or be inside, but not chained up. This is no way to have, charish, or love a pet.

That is really creul. It's a stupid way to train a dog to bark. I've never heard of training your dog to bark. I've had dogs all my life and all of them barked on their own. I don't agree with tying a dog up to a tree either. Maybe for a short time it would be okay, but other than that, I think they should roam freely in a gated yard or in the house. Also, I can't believe someone will actually make the dog whine for hours. That must be so annoying after a while. Do you ever sneak food or snacks to it? I would!

Well, that is almost impossible. There are 12 people in that house, and someone is always close to the pup. :( She does feed it, but gives it a lot of such mental torture before feeding it. She wants it to bark always. Crazy woman! Cheers and thanks for the response.

This woman is cruel and selites in being so. She whould be reported to the humane society or animal cops if you have them where you live. This is so bad I can't stand to even think about it. Why would she want the dog to bark, anyway? She is just mean and cruel Don't let her get away with it! Report her!

This owner needs to have the pet removed. How she expects a puppy to understand her, I can't imagine. Why she WANTS the dog to bark, I understand even less. But most of all, withholding food as a means of teaching it to perform on command is cruel and honestly, I think you ought to report her to your local SPCA. If she wants to train the dog so badly, she needs to find professional trainers who will do it properly. She sounds like she's not equipped to responsibly take care of the dog. Please, have the courage to take action.

I do not understand why on Earth she would want to train her dog to bark. You are right dogs bark naturally. And each bark is distinctivend indicates a particualr need or communication. Like I know the difference between my dogs barking at me because they feel I have ignored them and I know when they are telling me that someone was on my property. All this woman is doing is teaching her dog that it cannot rely upon her to fulfill it's basic needs. This dog is not going to learn how to properly communicate with her...and not to mention it is quite cruel. I don't know if this is possible, but could the woman suffer from something called Munchauser's disease....you know the one where people make (usually children) feel like they are helpless or sick so they are needed for their care. it sounds like she is a combo of the three you mentioned and I would suggest for her to sign up with one of those dog training courses where she is prsent with the trainer so she can get an idea about what it is to be an animal owner. Either that or chain her to a tree and place a glass of water just out of reach...she wouldn't do it to herself so why wuld she do it to a dog?
