Do you believe STRESS puts weight on your body?

I've seen the commercials for it, like Relecore, and never gave it much thought just that many people eat alot and stress coulndn't possibly be the culprit. Let me tell you. Ever since I've seperated myself from my toxic relationship, the one that kept my stress at a peak on a regular basis (like walking on eggshells)--now I feel just GREAT. I swear it feels like I lost a pant size because the bloatedness I thought was tons of weight just disappeared. So maybe stress DOES put 'weight' on? Now Im not saying that everyone of us is not suffering from extra pounds and just stress but I am wondering if the number if much higher than we lead ourselves to believe, maybe HALF of the population? A great reason to sweep stress out of our lives. Another discovery is that my doctor told me I have high blood pressure!! Im going to really read up on stress and affects our bodies and take it much more seriously from now on. Im back to my vegetarian ways and back to the gym everyday.

Yes, I do. I am a victim of it.Stress also kills. It causes alot of medical problems. They have proven that a good amount of mysterious illnesses are actually caused by stress.

i imagine a lot of people are unaware of pent of stress in their lives and would contribute their physical ailments to a list of things leaving stress out of it.

I honestly believe that stress is a huge factor in putting on extra weight. When I'm stressed I eat..without even realizing it. Going to a gym is out because when I hit that high stress level I don't want to be around anyone. Stress is a major factor in a lot of health related issues. I think we need more techniques out there on getting rid of it or lowering it. Prevention is key!

i dont want it in my life anymore--at the level that i was at, its just awful, its like it weighs down your body and all i could think to do is sleep, now that i understand what it feels like it i think i can better manage it before it gets that bad. I have a habit of holding things in.

Personally, I feel you are on to something Big here, and I really feel that Stress does add to your Body weight in a lot of situations and can be Bad to your Blood Pressure and other health reasons as well. It can also cause many Severe headaches, etc. as well, and if you have the added weight that really makes it hard to do things as well. But overall I know from experience most of the time when I am stressing for some reason I tend to eat more, so it is very true for sure.

I am a firm believer that stress causes our bodies undue strain and that can go either way. Whether it be weight loss for some or weight gain for others. The best way to prevent our bodies from going through this is to rid our lives of as much stress as is possible. Blood pressure is another way that stress is harmful to the body. People need to take this very seriously as there are some very serious repercussions that can occur if the stress is ongoing for a long period of time.

Hi bombshell, you can gain weight if you are stressed and/or eat too fast, or not at all. When you don't eat enough, or at all, the hormones will still contribute to weight gain, and your metabolism will slowly shut down for fear or not being able to get food. The body has a way of retreating into survival mode in case of catastrophe.

Yes, stress can lead to over-eating, which leads to weight gain. One doctor I saw told me that stress is the leading root cause of many medical problems.

Hi revellanotvanella I believe that stress do put on weight on you. Once you are stressed, your body assumes that you are in danger, and produces various hormones such as cortisol. These hormones are affecting your metabolism that results in weight gain. Also when you are stressed, you switch over to emotional eating. You eat more of junk foods which are fatty, sugary and salty, which leads to weight gain. So find yourself which causes you stress and eliminate those stress factors. If it can not be eliminated, learn to live with them without stress as stress can not be eliminated completely.

I heard on tv that the junk food alone emits a variety of responses in our brain to kind of calm these stressful signals in our body, unfortunately, only a temporary remedy

I read that stress does restrict the body from its natural functions, such as processing food, and others. If we could all learn to handle stress, or as someone suggested, channel it to more beneficial uses, we could probably put JENNY CRAIG(weight reduction clinic) out of business.

good point, maybe digesting does slow because perhaps the extra stress puts your body in a defense mode where it stops its normal functions to counteract these hormones from wreaking havoc--i definately agree with the exercise advice because when I am so stressed my body actually feels like theres a rush of adrenaline and if your under constant stress this adrenaline could be damaging.

Stree does affect your weight. I know this because ever since I was in high school I have tried to get control of my weight. I fluctuated between a ten to fifteen pound weightloss through those years and each time I began to gain back I gained more. I also had a lot of inner turmoil going on because of my life situations, low self esteem, etc. All those things just kept intermixing with each other and I kept sabotaging myself. then one day after my mother had her heart attack I realized I could not keep feeling sorry for myself. I began reading up on ways to help change her life and eating habits, etc. Well, then I applied it to my own life as a way of support to her...and found my own weight loss regimen...I have lost and kept off 34 pounds in the last 7 years. I also heard that when women get into their 30's the metabolism slows down, well my seems to actually be speeding up and finally working for me. After reading all those books, magazines, etc. I have learned that not only there is a definite link to stress and weight, but it actually is simple to live and eat what you want if you follow the basic rules, that is unless you have a genetic reason for weight problems. Even my mother's doctor (a diabetic doctor) tells her if she wants something have it, but take in moderation. We tend to make things harder on ourselves than they really are...and that is where the psychological issues come in.

Good for you for taking control again. It can be so easy to let stress run our lives instead of us running stress out of our lives. I'm not sure stress alone adds on the weight as much as how we cope with stress can add the pounds to our hips and thighs. If I get stressed the mere thought of food will have me in the bathroom ready to toss my cookies so I am one that does not eat a bite when stressed. I try real hard not to allow anyone the ability to stress me out but there are days when I can feel it creeping in on me. Those are the days that I take a hike and walk off that excess energy.

Hello, I do believe that stress does pack on extra pounds onto the body. I'm not sure how though because I am stressed out everyday and when I am stressed I usually just sit there and eat. But I don't always eat when I am stressed it is just once in awhile I eat when I am stressed. But I tell ya what I wish that stress was not existent because then I would not have to worry about gaining weight. But we have to deal with what comes our ways. Happy Mylotting

I don't think its the stress itself that's putting on weight. Someone that is stressed is someone that has alot to do, so they would be getting lots of excercise, and not much rest. I think it would be the medication people are given for stress, that would cause you to not care, and be in a lazy state of mind that would make you gain weight.

many people do gain weight going on meds, i do know that aloof feeling you get on them and feel like i have to push three times harder to stay focused on my physical regimen

STRESS definitely puts weight in our body because it involves mental health. That's why many people are getting older faster because of stress.

i can definately agree to that, my bf i swear aged 10 years in his appearance from work stress and when i look on one of his old drivers license he looks like boy compared to now, PHEW--men, words of wisdom. Wonder if men produce more stress....or cortisol? in the body than woman

I think it depends on the person to be honest with you. My mum when stressed piles it on because she turns to food and eats junk food to try and deal with it. Yet me, when I am stressed stop eating altogether, I cannot eat a thing my stomach knots itself up and I am unable to eat. At one period of my life a couple of years ago I lost 5 stone through stress and recently I lost another half a stone through stress.

it is the case for me though.. but that's mainly because whenever i'm stressed out, i'd start to snack. my mouth just wouldn't stop nor rest. It just can't. WELL... anyway.. i would start gaining weight from snacking. So indirectly, i do gain weight when i'm stressed. being easily stressed up, it's really not good for my well-being. I'm still learning how to chill...

I do think that stress can play a big role on the body's system. I don't think it is crazy to believe that weight can be put on because of it. Sometimes the worries and stress can make you eat more. Therefore eventually you can put on some extra pounds.

Yes, it is possible that stress can put weight on the body. That is why wise people preach that we should lead stress-free lives and stress will lead to tension. We can also see that where there is too much stress, there are many people who are obese. In America, so many people are obese and there are many depressed people in America.

Based on my experience, stress is one factor for that. I was eating a lot just to satisfy my tired body and i always want to eat in fast food, burgers, fries makes me happy after a hard days work. But let me tell you, it made me overweight year 2006 and 2007. Although i find it hard to resist fatty and salty foods, i just cut it down because my health is already suffering. Imagine, i was so fitness conscious but stress made me forget all those healthy lifestyle, exercise and all. I am back in shape now, but i need to do toning exercises for my arms and thighs. But i also learn a lot how to manage stress. Happy mylotting! and hugs to all mylotters!
