How do you go about naming your new kitty?

I love getting a new kitty, especially when they haven't been named yet and you're the one that gets to give the kitty it's very first name. I usually watch it for a couple of days to see how it acts or reacts to things around it. I then think of a person, place or thing that closely resembles the personality of the kitty. For example, I had a kitten that was just a fat, little, grey, furball on four feet. He was the last one to the food bowl when I called the litter for dinner. I named it Speed Burp, because the fastest thing it did after it ate was just let out a big burp! How do you go about naming your kitty? DCMerkle

I don't lol. I will call it kitty. Then when people ask what's is name, I say. I haven't decided yet. "but its been 3 months" "so what do you think I should call kitty?" ...and I use that name when they are around, and a different name for each person. I do not think that names are overly important when it comes to animals, so long as you show love and devotion.

CJscott, A kitty has to have a name. It's a way of boding for you and the kitty. Not having a name to a cat would be like having fur....lol DCMerkle

that post was so screwed up...lol Let's try this again. Naming a cat is a bond between you and the kitty. Not having a name is like not having fur.

Aye, I can understand how some feel that way. But I personally do not think it matters one or another to a kitty. I bond with my kitties quite well. They show much affection to me. It works for me.

We go for the strangest names :D We started with the politicians that we didn't particularly like, then moved on to the awful telenovelas - we got the leading ladies' names. Now we're into the "he's not what he seems" names. Our cat is named "daga" which means "rat" and our dog (pug breed) was named "kitty". Our (street) dog is called "squid ball" :D the last one was actually the youngest's idea. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

oyenkai, Now that's interesting. I never thought about a theme name for the mood that I was in. Now my grandmother also raised Pug dogs and I know they are far from looking like a kitty so Kitty is a perfect name for your little doggie. Tell your youngest that even I like Squid ball for the street dog. Now picture that written up on the animals information card in a vet. When my father-in-law had taken a cat that we had until recently, to the vet, the receptionist had asked the cat's name. He proudly said "Pooh!". The receptionist asked how that was spelled. He said, "Exactly how it sounds.", which meant, he hadn't really given it any serious thought.....lol Your welcome. You post was interesting and It was something that I was in the mood for. DCMerkle

I got my cat from a friend and he was already named. He is named fluffdaddy, because diddy was once named puffdaddy. He is a cute cat and his name suits him. I dont know what else I would have named him. If I get another cat I am going to name him Jazzy because I like it and I think it would fit either a male or female kitty.

snow22315, I guess fluffdaddy has long hair? Long haired cats love to be brushed and they usually hve to be brushed more than the average short haired cat, but all cats love being brushed. DCMerkle

I give name to new kitty the similar way as yours. I do not rush in give names and I even don't have a time frame. I also name kitties according to their behavior or appearance. when a name comes to my head, I name my kitties. it's on spur of the moment. Last year bought 2 newborn kitties. one looks like a princess when she sits and she is all white, I can call her princess. one was also a she but she was as naughty as a little boy so I called her tomboy.

chameleon, Sometimes I wish that we could name our children the same way...lol Just sit back and watch them in action. I know I've been told a name of someone's kitty and it just seemed that the name didn't fit or match the kitty. I've seen the same thing in kids. DCMerkle

I have so much passion in felines. I've got my first cat when my exboyfriend gave me one for a gift to me. I named her "Missy" which I thought at first to name her. It sounds good to me. Missy is a siamese cat so lovely and cute! She was just 3 months old then when I got her. From then on, I realized that I would like to put a cattery and before I can do that I must have a tom cat to be Missy's stud partner. Then we bought another tom cat which I named him "Hussy". This tom cat means a lot to me. He's my favorite among all of my cats then. Any idea where I get his name? Well, actually Hussy means "Husband of Missy" (Hu-ssy). And then on, they produce lots of litters and all of them has it's own name. This time, their names are after their color or depending on their character or some of them I named them after the cartoon characters because I run out of names to think about in just one second...*wink*

Chay428, My mother and Grandmother use to raise Siamese cats. They are known as the clowns of the cat world. I use to love watching the kittens turn from pure white to the color that they were going to be. Their little masks always looked so cute. Continued luck in your breeding endeavors. DCMerkle

It wasn't all that long ago that I had the exact same problem. Got two beautiful kittens and had a hell of a time trying to decide not only upon a name I liked, but something my sister liked too. In the end we spent ages looking through baby name sites online, trying to find interesting meanings or fun sounding words. In the end we went for Raven (all black cat) and Cadence (doesn't shut up) though I still wanted to call one of them bobilina, destroyer of worlds, consumer of all the cosmos. Apparently that wasn't appropriate for a cat.....

Aquilis, Now I like the meaning behind Bobilina. I know a few cats where their personality's would definitely match a name like that. I really like Cadence too. Those are teo great names. DCMerkle

I think it is a very hard thing to do, I have pnly had two cats I could name as one already had a name, the first one I namrd Smokey because she was a smokey grey colour and the one I have now I called Stumpy because she only has a stump for a tail...people have strange ways of naming animals, I have a friend who always has the same coloured cat which is always a female and it is always called Man so try and work that one out

lilaclady, Well as strange as that may seem, I did that with a line of Shepherds when I was a child. My father use to bring home the rejects off the K-9 force. The 1st one that he brought home we named O'Toole. My father had to have him put down because of hip displasia, which was why he had been rejected from the K-9 division. My father brought home 2 more shepherds over time after that and I just had to name them the same name, O'Toole. DCMerkle

I have a tendency to name my cats after characters in books. My first cat was Alice after "Alice in Wonderland." My current cat is Rhiannon after the wizard Merlin's sister in "The Lost Years of Merlin." And I called a cat I recently fostered "Lurk" after Zedd's cat in "The Sword of Truth" series. I had one cat, though, who I named K.C. after K.C. Masterpiece barbecue sauce- because when he was a kitten, we were having barbecue and K.C. climbed up my dad's shirt to lick the barbecue sauce off his face.

thyst07, That's kind of the way that I name cats especially with the way that you named KC. Sometimes it's the action of a cat that speaks loud and clear to me. It may even be a way that the cat is telling you what they want to be named...lol DCMerkle

Sometimes the name can come from the cats character. But we have named our cats after things we like. We have Ozzy who was named after Ozzy Osborne and Oscar and Wilde who were named after the Irish playwright Oscar Wilde. We also have two dogs named Amber and Zack. Zack was named after one of Ozzy Osborneā€™s guitarists and Amber was after a character in one of out favourite TV shows.

LOL funny name for a kitty. Well mine is no better at first I came up with the name Mickey, but my father in law says, that once the cat finds out it's named after a famous mouse it will claw me LOL. So, now it's name is GW it stands for gray and white LOL,but everyone seems to like that name better.

misslovelyfiles, I never thought of naming a kitty with just the intials of the cats coloring. That's something to keep in mind. I did have a siamese that was a stray that stood for the personality that she thought she was. I called her Toshi. It was the first two letters of the first word and the the last 3 letters of the second word. Here's another clue. She thought that she was real big and bad enough to take on a german shepherd. She was a real little To_ _ _ _ Shi_ DCMerkle

I always liked to see a pets personality then decide a name. I know it sounds corny but I like to kind of get to know them first. My hubby don't much are for my taste in names but I still like my style. That is me though.

I've never had a pet, but if I had to name one, I'd prolly just choose a random name that I find cute. It most likely would not have anything to do with how the animal behaves at all.
