Why do they call them that? What wisdom do we really get from them and if they are so "wise" then why in the he double hockey sticks do they want you to rip them out of your mouth? Two days ago i got my bottome wisdom teeth removed and i was all fine and dandy until after it was all done once home i was numb for almost three hours and then the novicaine wore off man oh man was i in pain thankfully while i was numb my husband had gone and gotten my prescription for pain medication and i was able to take it before it got to bad but why do they hurt so much for so long its been two days well now three and my jaw still hurts from having them removed not to mention i need to make another appointment to have the top ones removed. I am NOT excited.

Well, young lady, the wisdom teeth were so named because a long time ago, these teeth did not make an appearance until the person was a fully grown adult, therefore considered 'wise' as compared to children. And sometimes they did not appear until the person was into their late 30s or 40s or later, thus giving an impression that they came in once the person was 'wise'. The name has stuck, even though a lot of the times they make their appearance in the teen-age years. And if your mouth or jaw is not large enough to have the room for the wisdom teeth, they must be removed. My wisdom teeth came in at age 15 (some, ahem, 40+ years ago). While I do not remember it being that painful afterwards, my jaw did ache some for a day or two. If I remember, the dentist I went to, took the wisdom teeth one at a time, mainly because there was some time in between each tooth to come in. Hope all is well now. (I don't blame, I would not be excited either!)

Fortunately for me I got my wisdom teeth removed years ago when I was a teenager. Right before they started coming in my dentist warned me that they would have to be removed at one point in my life because otherwise it could cause a lot of pain due to overcrowding. As I didn't want to have to deal with problems later down the road I opted to get them removed. The dentist gave me a couple of options. I could either wait for all of them to come in and get them removed all at once or get them pulled as they came in, one at a time (I had a total of 4). As much as I wanted to get it done and over with and not go back to get more removed I chose one at a time. I'm glad I did, especially after my husband told me how he had all 5 of his removed at once and how much pain he was in. I had been in pain too, but nothing compared to my husband with having all of them pulled out at the same time. Yikes! I hate to say it, but I don't think anyone is ever excited when it comes to getting their wisdom teeth removed. I know I wasn't, but I'm glad I got it done when I did.
