Alec Baldwin and His Issue with Filipinos

Hi all! You are probably aware of this recent controversy involving Alec Baldwin and his comment on getting a new wife. There had been several instances when the Filipino people went into an uproar because of derogatory comments made by American personalities whether in the shows or in their interviews. The more recent happening involved veteran Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin who commented that maybe he will get a Filipina mail-order-bride. Although I know for a fact that mail-order-bride setups are still in existence, I think it is unfair to single out Filipinas. Only a few people have resorted to this scheme, mainly for the reason of escaping poverty, and it is unfair to assume to every Filipina is up for sale. I know, this is not what Baldwin meant. But really, his comment was provocative. Maybe we should stop the name calling of people from other nations. Each one of us has rights. We live our lives the way we want to. So if we have nothing good to say to other people, let us just keep our mouths shut. We should refrain from making comments that have hints to hitting other races, especially if we are on TV or if a representative of any media is around. If there are sensitive issues, then maybe we should just talk about this with our friends and not openly utter them and get misquoted (but I doubt that Mr. Baldwin was misquoted.) Now the Philippine senate is demanding a public apology from Mr. Baldwin and they say that he will face mayhem if and when he visits the country. I have always liked this actor. Too bad, he lost my respect for him on account of his ungentlemanly behavior. What do you think about this issue? Care to share your thoughts? Take care all and Happy mylotting! :D

I think your overreacting. The joke could be considered in bad taste, but it wasnt offensive to me. I think it just hit too close to home for some. It is true, after all. Were too thin-skinned sometimes.

This is just my opinion: I think Alec Baldwin is unaware how painful his comment to all Filipinos, or maybe he did not know the difference between a Filipina mail-order bride and finding a mate through chatting in the internet. I think that's two different world. You can make friends with foreigners through chatting and not directly involved marriage proposal or something to that effect. He said that kind of comment maybe because of many Filipinas marrying Americans and other foreigners they met through chatting the net. In this case, Alec Baldwin got a mistake in expressing his sentence, grammatically correct but figuratively and literally wrong! It is right to demand a public apology so that foreigners learned a lesson or two on how to treat and construct a correct sentence and term for Filipina.hehehe

I am disappointed to hear him say that. I heard that he has already apologized for his insensitive remark to "all those who took offense". So sorry that he had to learn it the hard way. He does not know that we already have a law against mail-order brides since 1990 called the Anti-Mail Order Bride Law and that our government has stepped up efforts to curb the exploitation of Filipina women as brides since the late 80s.

I think Alec Baldwin should give public apology. Why do foreigners like to humiliate Filipinos? I think it's because we Filipinos are unique in every way and in everything that we do. Right?

In my opinion, Alec Baldwin should make a public apology because of what he said. You were right when you said that we should respect every races that exist here in this world, for us to gain respect from other people. He should not suppose to say that since it's unfair to every single Filipina who is not doing the same thing. It's also unfair to generalize Filipina on his statement.
