how important is the college where you graduated, in applying for a job?

there are other factors why a student cannot go to a good school even if he/she wants to. how important is it really? i mean can it make or break you? i thought the employers will look at the grades, if they're good you have a chance. i also thought that it's not the school that can make you succeed. it's your ability, your skills. but then there are people who are good at what they do but are not given chance to prove their worth because they came from a not so known school. what do think?
