Have you ever left your car keys inside your car ? What did you do ?

There are cases when we are accidentally (pre-occupied) left our car keys inside. If we carry along a spare set of car keys, then there is no problem. But most of the time we did not carry an extra set. So, does this ever happened to you or your friends. What will you do , or what the action to be taken? This normally happened to old cars as the new ones came with remote control keys... May be it did happen long long time ago. Do share your experience or of someone you know... Tks and have a nice weekend!

recently, during our trip to some place, we went to the petrol bunk and filled the gas. When we went to the counter to pay the bill, with the keys left inside the car, the car locked itself automatically. Fortunately the distance was not very far, so we rang up to my younger son in the house and informed the matter. He immediately took his vehicle and reached the spot with the spare key and the problem was solved. That was the good lesson for us and till date, the first thing we do when we get out of the car is taking the keys along with us

yeah indeed absent minded case. Lucky for me that i am in my young hood. These problems arise when you are getting older or when you are getting occupied with more and more important work so that you just forget you routing work. Routine work like lock the car, lock the house, forget your pet or even baby sometimes!!

Dear Samir, You have a very good point there. Forgot about baby! My husband was supposed to fetch my son back from school one day. He was busy chit chat with our neighbour. I was surprised to hear his voice still around when I look at the clock...'It's time to fetch my son'. He just forgot totally about it....

Dear Samir, Glad to have you here and it is wonderful to read your experience too..Thanks .. It happen many times to me too. Trying to look for my car keys inside the car when in actual fact it was hanging right outside the car door. At times I left it hanging at the car booth when trying to put something in the booth. This is really an 'absent minded' case. All the best and happy myLotting!

It has happened to me a couple of times and it was very embarrassing, had to go home and get the spare key. Once it was really bad while we were all traveling to a different city. We all came out of the car to take a break and we were in the middle of nowhere and the car got automatically locked with the keys inside. We did not know what to do as it was getting dark. We finally had to break a small glass panel by the window and open the car doors...All the best and have a great weekend

Guess what Iriene? we had a spare key in my bag and I had left the bag on the front seat LOL....The music was on and the key was in the ignition , we decided to stretch our legs a bit as it was a very scenic spot and all of us banged the door shut and it locked itself . Now we are all very careful with the keys...

Dear kiran, So sorry to hear that you have to sacrifice the small glass panel of your window...this can happen anywhere, anytime and to anyone especially when we are in a hurry or our minds are pre-occupied with some other urgent things! So the best way to solve this problem if it occur, will be ~ prepared to handle it by carry along with us the spare car keys in our wallet...becareful though...always keep our wallet safely. There are cases where people lost the handbag, with the items and information inside the handbag, if it falls into wrong hands ... they can steal the car & rob the house too. It happened to my close friend's friend! All the best and do keep in touch!

It happened to me last year. I was rushing to office at that time, and didn't realize that I left my key in my car. So, the car shut itself and automatically locked. Dunno why, but it never happened before. But luckily my office was just nearby a workshop. So I called one mechanic there to help me out, and they did it for free! =)

Hi Iriene, hope you don't mind if I turn your question around but I have the completely opposite problem. I can't take my keys out of the car. If I take them out of the ignition it won't turn back on again. The garage was going to fix it but were worried as it was an expensive job so suggested if I just leave the keys in it will last longer without having to have the locking mechanism fixed. So now I have to leave the keys in, covered up with a cloth, windows full up and doors locked with the spare key. Wonderful in this heat.

Hi Iriene, no I don't leave anything running, if you only turn the ignition key half way and leave it in it doesn't do any damage. The air con is broken anyway. The guy at the garage is just a gent who doesn't need to do expensive repairs if there's a way round them. Several years before I never even worried about locking the car but now we are becoming more aware of crime beginning here so have to be more careful. The insurance man said there was no problem with leaving the key inside as long as I locked the door.

Hi Well this happened only once , and after that I have been taking precautions to ensure that the keys are in my hand before I close the door. Also one way I handle it is ensure the auto lock or the door lock lever is not engaged. But when it happened, it was a mess. I was already in a hurry to go , and with the keys still in the ignition, I slammed the door shut, unfortunately with the door, lock lever in engaged position, and, closed the door very calmly. When I turned back to open the door, I realized I had not pocketed the keys!...Well I don not know if it works for you, or in all cars, but if you manage to have a steel ruler or strong steel strip, you can slide it between the glass and the door body between the rubber beading exactly in front of the Door lock engage lever, and press hard on the steel plate that actually activates the close/open lever. It takes a quick hard shove, and Lo behold the door will open. Well if you have an Autolock then it is not possible, luckily I hadn't installed one only for this same reason. Maybe this may not work on all cars or those having an Autolock mechanism. Well that was my experience and I hope it never happens again.

I noticed a mechanic open a locked car where the key had been lost. It had an Autolock and a burglar alarm. He just went under the car and snapped off the cable that is running underneath, and the doors opened without the alarm going off. In a way it is scary, because one can easily steal a car that way. You just have to know which cable to disconnect...

This happened to my husband, our old car was having some problems with the lock. He was parked in a mall, he was feeling very sleepy so he wanted to take a short nap in the car. After a while, he stepped out for some air, he was not able to stop the door from slamming shut then the car automatically locked itself, with the keys in the ignition, the car stereo running, his cellphone and wallet inside the car. He had to go into the mall, trying to find someone who would be willing to lend him some change so he can call me or at least let him send an sms message to me. Luckily, the mall was near my office and I have a spare key with me

I really tend to forget the get key inside the ignition switch. It happend to me several times already. Fortunately I have a duplicate key on my wallet so it always saves the day. But there is one time that I forgot to bring my duplicate key and I left the original key inside the car. So I cannot open the car. What I did was I went back home, commuting. And I get a duplicate key, then i went back to my car and I finally opened it. Lol! It is really uncomfortable situation when you forget to get the key inside the car. Happy myLotting!

It is horrible to leave your car keys inside your car. I would break my window just to get in if I was far away from home. If I was still in the city I would phone someone to grab the spare key so my car is in its same conditions. But I would damage my car to get in if I can in a different city at the time. God bless

Dear doggyhouz, I agreed it is a horrible situation to leave the car keys inside. But what we normally do is to get help from the 'locksmith'! They will know how to do the magic, the door will open just in minutes...we have to pay around RM35 - RM50 depends on how far is the car from the locksmith shop! (USD 1 = RM3.5) Tks for sharing & hope to hear from you again at other interesting topics!

Dear minhminh, Good, you are always alert and aware of your car keys. Great job. Keep it up! It is really a hassle and stressful to go through if one left their car keys inside the car. The worst if the person do not have any spare keys, then have to call for 'Pop-a-Lock' or in Malaysia we have to call the Locksmith...the charges can range from RM35-50. Tks and do keep in touch

This could happen to anyone of us, especially when we are in a hurry. But I am wondering how you lock your car without the keys? Anywhere, we should keep a spare key at home so that we can open the car ourselves without the help of lock picker. But make sure the spare keys is not placed in the car. LOL

Well I certainly hope it won't happen to me. The door of my car doesn't lock on its own - not sure if modern high-tech cars have this feature now. So, I should be "safe" from this disaster. Nevertheless, if it ever happens (touch wood), I'd have to call AAM to help me get a locksmith.

I always thought all these new technology that you do not have to worry about leaving your key in the car, but it is true, even now, the cars are not too smart to warn you that you have left the key inside? a little reminder, a small warning , don't forget your key as you stepping out the car! that would be useful right! it never happened to me but i have seen it happen to many people, they just wait there for AA.

It can save money, save time too! Yes, how I wish there are new technology to remind us of the car keys, my car will beep if I forgot to off the lights, it should be able to do likewise for the keys..hmm may be we should look into this feature... Good suggestion...

i did this once all i did was bought a knife and some tennis balls from the store and cut a hole for the tennis ball to fit on the lock (to create air presure.) and it poped right open when i pushed on it. it works on a few select cars though.
