Hello???? If it's private, why tag?

I guess I'm stuck with tags lately.Or maybe not. I was just responding to comments on my other discussion and someone was saying how we should tag, discussions, comments, photos, images responses, etc and I remembered about the pm system in myLot. If tagging helps organize discussions and themes so people can search, why are we asked to tag private messages. ..huh.... they're private - aren't they? If tags are to help searching, do we want our private messages searched? Really, it makes no sense to tag private messages and I never do. Do you? I tag pretty much everything else, following the rules and being a good girl, but I draw the line at tagging my private messages LOL - I just skip it. Do you tag yours?

I sometimes do. I realize it's for our own benefit. If we want to search our own PMs. But although I have a lot of PMs, I have never had to search for one of them.

I suppose if a person has zillions of private messages and doesn't delete them, it might be a bit hard to find them. I prefer to keep my private messages folder clean so I rarely have more than 2 or 3 in there. But, as you say, you have a lot of pms and you have no trouble finding them :) I still prefer not to tag my private messages.

I often tag them, but they are usually very generic tags. One I use often is "missing friends". It helps me search my messages. I think I really need to go in and delete a few thousand of them though.

LOL GG I guess that if you really need a search tool to find them, yeah... time to delete a million or two hehehehehe Well, I suppose it might be useful for you then hehe Personally I would still prefer to copy the information I want from those message somewhere else, and clean them from mylot.

Funny, I never search them. I will take a page form your book, perhaps and move important data

Very logical and good question arkaf! I also fail to understand that why we are asked to tag our Private messages. These messages are supposed to be private and we would not like to share these PMs with any unknown fellow. I also tag my PMs, out of compulsion, however, sometimes my PMs also get delivered to my friends, if I leave the tags option blank. I hope that our experienced friends and veterns like 'mysdiana' or 'dumbbledazy' could enlighten us on this issue.

Hi ark! It is good that you skip tags on PMs, which to my understanding also are not compulsory to use. Skipping them will also delivery our PM.

I am used to always tag everything in here, but for some reason I have no problem remembering to skip the tags in private messages LOL Good mental reflexes hehehehe What I've learned is that some people seem to keep their private messages and have many, and they might use it to sort them out or look for a specific message. I'm not that big on private messaging in the first place, so I'm not to excited about it :)

I hope someone explains this in a reply here because that question has often occurred to me as well. There must be a reason for it, but Like you, as I haven't figured that one out yet, I don't tag my own PMs either. Perhaps someone will say something that will change our minds?

Not so far, my friend. I still can't find the reasoning behind it but .... I guess some people are saying that they have many private messages and with the tags they find them. I guess it might be useful in those circumstances. It never occurred to me, because I never keep them there for long.

I don't know if it's my PC but each time I don't tag I might not be able to see the messages sent through. 1 or 2 rare times it passed through, but more often than not, the messages would not be sent. So I just put a tag like friends or new message that kind of thing. I'm clearing up my private messages one by one; too many, it's kind of cluttered, LOL..

That is strange zed, I never have a problem and I never tag private messages. I don't really private message much and I clean them often, I usually don't have more than 3 or 4 in there. But so far, I have never had a problem by skipping the tag process. Maybe it's because you have a lot there ? hehehe

Ooopsie, you've managed to sort it out for me. Now I know why! LOL.. the messages since I was here 2 years back; most of them were still in my inbox, not deleted. No wonder.. ahhh that solves the problem for why the tags are needed then. I did clean for a bit, but it seems to be never ending that I just gave up totally, ha!! If I'm right; there are a total of 11 pages altogether.. wow, I have lots of spring cleaning to do then..

I never understood tagging private messages either. They have the same option on Gather to tag private messages, and I never do that. I don't understand why anyone would need to tag a private message, and yet these paid social forum sites all offer the option. Sometimes I wonder.

I'm pretty sure I never did this. I never saw the point in adding tags to PM's. Discussions, sure, PM's, no. Though at the same time I don't really see the point in adding tags to discussions either. I know it's supposed to help so that we don't post similar discussions that are already on here, but with there being almost 185,000 members on this site, similar discussions are bound to happen every now and then. Tagging...who needs it? Happy mylotting!
