What is your definition of a soul?

I came across something that I found very interesting. An article that was about the soul. It pretty much stated that although there are different beliefs and religions that people's definition of the soul are pretty much the same. I figured I'd ask everyone here because we are all from so many different places I thought it would be neat to see how everyone responded. I think the soul is everything that we are..the thing that is alive in us and gives us our thoughts, personalities and moods. It is our essence. So what about you? What is a soul in your opinion?

You know, this is a great topic, and one I would really like to answer to, as well as see what others have to say. A soul is definitely as you define-it is the inner spirit, the conscience, one's beliefs in what is wrong and right, one's wisdom, one's heart, and your actions in life that serve for the better. "Have you no soul?" -As the old adage states-is loosely defined as one who has no spirit or love for others-one who is cruel and mean. You can't get any deeper than the soul-as we all hope to someday find a soulmate-one who is figuratively on the same levels as us in many different aspects.

I guess I can't cheat and look it up, huh? I'd say it was what makes each of us unique, what lives on after our bodies are gone, our essence.

Hi Jen! Our Soul is what we are actually from inside. It is a kind of our micro self, that works somewhere within our body. When we die, our body comes to naught and our soul gets out of our body to enter into any other person's body. Our body is a macro organism and others can only see our macro image. Our soul is controlled by God and when we die, it is the God who decides which will be next abode.

Hi Deepak! That's a very intriguing concept. To think that I was at one time someone else is...or not really someone else because my soul is the same..but in a different vessel...hmm...thank you so much for the interesting response!

I think my soul is something deep inside of me that controls everything i do & feel. It'a a place where u keep your intermost secrets & feeling & something u can't share w/too many people. I have heard people say about other people they don't have a soul. I truly belive that some folks don't.

Hi Jo! I have wondered about that myself. It seems that some people couldn't possibly have a soul sometimes with the things that they do. Thanks for the response.

These days since I've started reading some Indian philosophy I'm starting to feel that there may really be a soul (Atman) attached to us; which though not realized directly, governs us. I have so far found it all quite sensible. I feel the soul is the subtler part of us. It is a manifestation of the Absolute Consciousness. In fact every single aspect or entity of this physical universe is a shoddy representation of the same Absolute Consciousness. The soul is indestructible and eternal. It may change forms; i.e. locations from one body to another and finally back to the Absolute Consciousness. The soul, I guess is intrinsically noble. It does not depend on any external God. In fact there is no God, in my opinion. Every single act done by the physical body leaves behind a Karmic psyche on the soul which decides its later path/s. I do not have a direct proof of all this as of now. But they all this stuff can be realized by Yogic experiences or meditation. So dunno exactly.

So..the soul is like smaller extensions of something larger in which will all one day come to together? Is that right in my understanding? I do believe in karma for sure. Soul and karma could be directly releated in my opinion too. Thanks for the interesting response!

Yup, I feel you're right according to what I have read so far. But the Karma I find sensible is not simple arithmetical proposition that what all you do, you'll be returned the same in a future life because of an exterior God. I find it more sensible to say that the soul itself chooses its time, place, environment and conditions for a physical birth; depending on the psyche of previous lives. No hard and fast rules though. If it's the above kind of Karma, then it is pretty safe to say that Karma and soul go hand in hand.

Hi Jenintn well this certainly is interesting, soul huh. . . i think it is something we really are, our bodies are just a means to be the materialistic selves here in this world, we were made in the image of God and i guess we were created as souls and then the incident put us into these bodies that we now are 'trapped' in making us sinners. . . well if you are not religious then this all would sound weird but i don't fear admitting i believe in it...hehe... have a nice day Jenintn! . . . i guess one day we all will loose our bodies and see our 'real selves' . . . . souls could be the term for it.

Hi voldrox! Your response doesn't sound weird at all. I appreciate everyone's opinions on my discussions and your response was great. Most people do connect soul with religion. That's one of the reasons why I put this discussion under the religion section. I think we do have something hiding in these bodies that makes us who we are. Thanks for the input.

Hi syankee! I think your right about the darkness and the light. I think that a soul can be made to be dark if it's owner choses to do so. Thanks for responding.

Hey Jen! I think that your definition of soul is pretty right on. I think that soul is everythings that we are and everything that makes us what we are! It is the part of us that is us! It is what makes us feel, and act the way we do! It is what dictates or shows our very persona, or personality and our reactions to things and to others. It as you have said, is the essence of our being. It is the light from withing that makes us what we are~

The soul is the heart of the person the essence it is what makes that person special or otherwise. When someone does something bad like murder ect, they have a bad soul.Or some say no soul at all.I think you have described it very well, there is not much more for me to add, in my opinion anyway.

Hi suzzy! Makes me kind of wonder what it is that determines the kind of soul that we get. How close was I to getting one that was bad? Or not having one? I wonder strange things sometimes..lol..I just can't imagine being one of those people that are cold and do bad things. A couple of people have mentioned that it might be our actions that feed our souls for good or bad. I think that makes sense. Then there are those that think we are born with a certain type. That makes sense too..lol..Thanks for the input.

Hi JenInTn, one of my favourite quotations is from the writer Malcom Bradbury and is as thus: "he carries his soul around in a paper bag, as if he'd just bought it at Mark's and Spencers." I think that is a fair summation of emotion carried round on ones sleeve.

Hello there. well i wont say soul is eternal or good or bad or pure, but the only thing i will give you for what is our soul is, it is something that you feel guilty in when you do wrong, it is something you feel good when you love someone.A soul is you the real part of what you really are, it reveals you through your eyes and face just as your face reveals you when you look into the mirror. So even if you hide from the world what scars you have got on your face, you can never hide it from the mirror..Same is the soul even if you hide from the world your innerself knows what you really are made of....

That's a very sensible definition because really, with bad people among us, who's to say that the soul is always good or pure or any certain way. I think that is is the thing that we are that we can not hide. Consiousness. Nice response..thanks.

I think soul may be defined as one's inner conscience. The ability to differentiate between the right and wrong, the sound within us that tells us what should we do and what we shoul'nt, how we should behave and treat people. All of this is judged by our soul or our inner conscience. This is what I feel. Our externel body is just matter which will decay one day after we die. But the soul within us that makes every individual different from the other is eternal, which would remain forever.

Thanks for the response. One thing that I think about is that it's hard to imagine the energy inside me just going away after my body wears out. I just can't imagine it really. I don't think the soul ages either.

As a Christian I believe that the soul is the breath of God. After He created Adam He breathed into him and that's when he was given life. The soul is our very essence. Without the soul we wouldn't be alive. The soul is very complicated and I don't think we'll ever be able to understand it totally. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Hi kellyjeanne! Your right..the soul is complicated. I was reading that there are alot of religions that consider the soul "the breath" from their creator. It's neat how things are so much alike yet so different. Thanks for the response.

My soul is me...The essence of me... I read on: www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/.../ (NOT A REFERAL LINK) that, ”Without the soul, the body is like a light bulb without electricity, a computer without the software, a space suit with no astronaut inside.” I like the analogy and I agree that our soul is the light within, the total of who we authentically are.

Hi shibham! You have no idea how much I appreciate your input on this. The article I read said that the soul is not always related in belief to religion. That even those with no religious beliefs have some type of definition of a soul. I think that your response brings alot to the discussion. Thanks.

My definition of soul would be, it's the life force that resides in everybody in every living thing... Pretty much if I die, It will be thrown back to a some sort of "stream of life force"...
