Another ballgame, another injury...

After a two year break, my son began playing baseball again this year. It's odd... He LOVES this team. He LOVES his coach. More than any other team or coach he's had in the past. But dang, he's had some bad luck this season! A few weeks ago, he slid into second base and must have jammed his knee and ankle. He was in a lot of pain and couldn't continue playing. They barely had enough players to start, and when he couldn't finish the game, his team had to forfeit. We took him to the hospital for an x-ray and nothing was broken. He recovered in a few days. Well, today, we were playing against the SAME team. This time, he kinda decided to try to catch a fly ball with his face! Well, not exactly, but sort of. He almost had the ball. He got to it quickly, but it just missed his glove and hit his face. He was wearing one of his teammates sunglasses. It looks like the inside part of the glasses is what cut his face. He had a bit of blood gushing from his face at first, but the bleeding stopped pretty quickly. I had about FIVE people giving me advice on what I should do! I ended up taking him to the car (he didn't finish this game either). We've put ice on it and some neosporin. He will probably have a bit of a scar, but I don't think it's deep enough to bother with a hospital visit or stiches. It's a bit swollen right now. He actually looks kind of like Mickie Roarke right now. I guess He'll be fine... He's a little worried that his coach won't pick him again for next season. But other than that he's doing okay. I think these little setbacks are actually making him want to work harder. I think he has grown up a good bit since last year.

And only cliches come to mind: "No pain no gain", "That which does not kill me only makes me stronger."

Well, he's definitely had plenty of opportunities to become stronger over the past few years! lol I actually think there is some truth to that saying. He does seem to handle things a little better these days.

TTell little man that the coach will pick him next year. He is showing heart and that's what is needed in baseball. And he is fearless out in the field.Tell him he has the making of a real ball player.

Thanks. He had a nice hit today. One of the few players that had a hit. I reminded him of that. I think in our league coaches are only allowed to "freeze" 4 players each season. But I do think the coach sees his potential and his heart. I will remind him of that.

The more he plays the more he will learn how to handle the game. Injuries are a part of the game. Don't let him become scared of being hurt. With proper instruction and conditioning things will get better. A group activity such as sports, if he likes it, is a great way to learn team work and fair play and sportsmanship. Good luck and I hope he gets better with each day.
